We have the next all new Psdtuts+ Design Contest to kick off this month. We're partnering with one of our sister sites MacAppStorm for this one. Give us your best lightening themed wallpaper design with a Mac feel that you've got. For you Mac lovers out there, this will be a fun contest!

Up for grabs are numerous cash prizes, a vareity of Mac applications, and a 1-year membership to Psd Plus. This is going to be a Mactastic contest! Learn all about the contest and how to enter at the jump!

Contest Winners!!!

After a great deal of deliberation, we have decided upon the winners of our desktop wallpaper competition (in conjunction with Mac AppStorm). There were so many fantastic entries, choosing only ten winners was incredibly difficult, but the results are in. To view the winning entries visit Psdtuts+ Wallpaper Competition Winners announcement on Mac AppStorm.

Also, stay tuned to Mac AppStorm as a huge selection of contest entries will be showcased in a new post there shortly. There was a truckload of creative entries into this contest. Thank you to all the entrants. Prizes will be distributed to the winners over the next few days.

About the Contest

This is a joint contest with our sister site MacAppStorm, which is a great place to learn all about Mac applications. Submit your best lightning themed wallpaper design with a Mac feel that you've got. Wow us with your talent and creativity!

So, get your entries in before August 28th, 2009 Eastern Standard Time. We'll be announcing the winners mid-Septermber. Get creative with this contest and have some fun!

Contest Judging

We will be judging this contest based on a few criteria:

  • Practicality and professionalism of design.
  • Originality and artistic direction.
  • Mac feel and creative application of the theme.
  • Attention to detail and level of pixel perfection.
  • Adherence to the Terms & Conditions of the contest.

How to Enter

To enter the competition, contestants may submit any number of wallpaper designs via the following instructions:

  • Submit your design via the MacAppStorm Wallpaper form.
  • Submit a JPG image with a Minimum resolution of 1920 pixels by 1200 pixels
  • Entries must somehow incorporate the AppStorm logo and/or the Apple logo
  • Also, here is the AppStorm Logo to use in your wallpaper design.

Prizes

Terms & Conditions

  • Entries must be submitted via our MacAppStorm Wallpaper form before midnight August 28th, 2009 Eastern Standard Time.
  • Entries into the competition must be entirely your work.
  • Plus memberships will be issued from the date of notification of the winners. They are not redeemable for cash.
  • Judging of the winners will be done by the editor and writing staff of MacAppStorm in conjunction with the Tuts+ Manager. Our decision is final.
  • Staff or regular writers of Psdtuts+ and MacAppStorm are not eligible to enter. Occasional contributors (i.e. people who have had less than 2 pieces of content published on the site) are eligible to enter.

    My god, this is totally embarrassing to you folks: Are we to produce a wallpaper that shows how to make something less dark? Because that is what “lightening” is.

    The word you were looking for is LIGHTNING.

    You spelt lightning wrong on the layer group in the psd version of the logo. Unless I’m missing some new American word that’s spelt ‘lightening’ then I do apologise :)

    Entirely your own work, so that cancels out people using other peoples stock photography right? EVERYTHING HAS TO BE YOUR OWN.

    It will be good to see people using their own talent and original ideas to create this wallpaper.

    Another great contest idea, question for you…

    Are you going to post all the entries, or at least a lot of them on a flicker account or similar, so we can see more than just the top ten or so entries…
    after seeing previous comps it would be great to see more of people’s work / interpretations.

    They are looking for a “lightning themed” wallpaper, which has been stated to be either a wallpaper involving lightning/lightning effects OR the AppStorm logo (OR the Apple Logo)

    - Entries must somehow incorporate the AppStorm logo and/or the Apple logo

    Since they link to the Appstorm logo and it incorporates the text, I would assume this to mean you have to have that in its entirety somewhere on the design, should you use it.

    brushes are distributed freely on the internet, and you can use them with the creative commons license. I am not reselling anything, nor am I creating reusable templates, they’re wallpapers, artworks if you like. apart from that, I’m not using anything but my own stock photos and Photoshop’s default layer styles.

    I just finished my first wallpaper and I now see all those comments about “ENTIRELY your work” and I’m sad. I used like one image that I transform and one brush (The PSDTuts PLUS PACK Lines brush). Anyway, I’ll post it here and I will try to do another wallpaper on my own this time.     I think the judges should say something about “Entirely your work thing”, but I strongly believe they meant: your work, not somebody else’s, it’s not like you put a brush in the middle of a white BG and say it’s your work. Brushes are tools to create unique pieces, and using somebody else’s brush (as long as it is legal to use) should not be considered copied work, therefore using should be allowed. Same thing for images – use if they’re yours, or bought under a license for use, that’s what the stock sites are for, alright? Ask any creative guy, he’ll tell you he can’t do cr4p without brushes or stock photos.
    Last, you all should listen to the people making the rules, not to those who invent them just because they can’t do something else creative.

      That’s what I think too but a lot of people think that ENTIRELY your work means everything you have created. I mean, if I take a picture with my friend’s camera, or I paint a nature scene with his paint, is it my work or his? That’s stupid as that. Do I need to draw that Apple, or can I just go in Illustrator, paste an Apple logo and vectorize it? Bodgan is so right. If I had a giant telescope, I would that a lot of picture to use them but I don’t have one so I looked up on Internet for FREE space pictures and I got some. I didn’t violated copyright…

      as you seem to have 2 light sources, and quite close, you shouldn’t really have the shadow at all, but a bit of ‘inside’ ones, like a bevel effect, to get it realistic somehow.
