About the Contest Judging
We looked at overall artistic quality, technical execution, originality, thematic execution, and video game cover style in judging these entries! Thanks to everyone who entered. Now let’s give it up to the winners. A round of applause please!
First Place Winner
The first place winner is Quintin Schnehage. The author has gone above and beyond the contest brief by providing a realistic-looking back cover with a blurb and game style screenshots, and a CD cover design. It’s a package I can genuinely imagine picking up in a game store. Overall the author has created something that looks like a game cover (paying mind to texture, shadows, and layout! Fantastic job on this design!
Congratulations, and your prizes are:
- Wacom Intuos4 Medium Tablet or USD $370 (cash only if outside shipping area)
- 1 year Plus membership (valued at USD $117)
- $100 to spend on GraphicRiver, AudioJungle, Flashden, VideoHive or ThemeForest
Second Place Winner
The second place winner is CorPaige. We’ve chosen this one for second place because it really looks like a video game cover. It’s a very powerful image and has a clear central point of focus. The originality and theme execution is strong.
Congratulations, and your prizes are:
- iPhone 3G S 16GB or USD $200 (cash only if outside shipping area)
- 1 year Plus membership (valued at $117)
- $75 to spend on GraphicRiver, AudioJungle, Flashden, VideoHive or ThemeForest
Third Place Winner
The third place winner is stebrfc. This is an original design. The main character has a strong cybernetic energy that radiates a glow against the muted composition. Highly stylized and unique cover design.
Congratulations, and your prizes are:
- Nintendo DS Lite or USD $130 (cash only if outside shipping area)
- 1 year Plus membership (valued at $117)
- $50 to spend on GraphicRiver, AudioJungle, Flashden, VideoHive or ThemeForest
Psdtuts+ ‘Delta Dawn’ Video Game Cover Design Contest Concluded
Congratulations to our winners! Great job to everyone that participated in the contest. I’ll be contacting the winners shortly to assist them with collecting their prizes. The winners should keep an eye on the Flickr email boxes for the next couple of days.
Some More Great Entries
There were quite a few entries that came very close to winning and we’d like to give them an honorable mention here. Also, there are certainly more good entries submitted into the contest that are in the Psdtuts+ Flickr Group. Here are just a handful more that really captured our attention. Also, feel free to submit a tutorial concept for your contest entry designs. Many of the designs I saw would make great Photoshop tutorials.

nooooooooo wayyyyyyyyy, the winner sucks!!!
I only like the third place and I believed my entry(sixth place) deserved a much better chance to win…
everyone tell me what you think
Dude relax… I think the first price actually won because it just looks like a legit and real game cover! I would believe this is available in stores if I didn’t know this was a contest
So congrats to the winners!
I agree with you. The winner is sucks. Your work is most good look than another.
First off, the winning design doesn’t suck at all, it’s actually very good. I do, however, agree that the second place design isn’t my favorite by any means.
Second, in response to your other comment below, the judge of the contest explains his reasoning for choosing the first place winner right above the images:
“The author has gone above and beyond the contest brief by providing a realistic-looking back cover with a blurb and game style screenshots, and a CD cover design. It’s a package I can genuinely imagine picking up in a game store. ”
The winner went above and beyond, and I think the layout of the package as a whole turned out really well. Your design was great, but this guy put the extra time into the design. This was something I had contemplated doing for this contest, but was also the reason I didn’t enter at all—I have a serious lack of free time right now.
Props to everyone who made this page anyways, there are only 13 of you and I think the recognition for your work is great compensation.
@Matthew,
I don’t think that it was suitable to give extra credit to him because he went ‘over and above’ the contest brief. When the contest was initially posted, I remember a few people asked whether they would have to design just the front cover or the entire package, to which the guys from PSDtuts said that only the front cover was required.
So obviously, when it was made clear that only the front cover was required, nobody would have wasted time trying to design all the other aspects because it would probably not be judged considering it was not a requirement. Hence, I think it is extremely unfair that the winner has gained extra credit for going beyond what was required.
I have a feeling that if the others had done the same, they could have also won?
I like 6th design the most … very advanced PS work and my favorite style…
Number six is very good, but there is a fundamental flaw with it. Delta Dawn is the name but the strapline is “The end is near”. Dawn = Beginning, so why is the end close? Only thing wrong with it, sick PS skills though.
hehe, i dont think one should promote himself that aggressive but in your case its actually true. i’m not sure about your typography, but that wasn’t important anyways, looking at the higher placed images xD
next time, send in a new xbox360 console design, it may earn you extra credit…
Agreed. Winner is very well done but still looks like some crappy THQ game. The second place and a few honorable mentions were MUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH much much better.
Quality not quantity.
btw xbox would never let the branding of blue slide with the one i believe you are claiming as yours.
the contest rules clearly stated that I could change the logo. Would changing the slide to a color that fits the theme of the design stop people from buying the game?
Yeah, I can kind of tell that you’re 13.
Still, your design was excellent and you’ll be kicking my ass in five years if you keep it up!
Dude your called Quentin, comedy.
Assuming your’s is ‘Delta Dawn – The End Is Near’, it looks like a movie poster, not a game cover.
I actually want to play the winners game.. bring back more post-apoc/futuristic games!
If the winner has made a video game on his entry perhaps he deserved to win. But photoshop is art, not marketing. The factors that makes you want to play the game is not because his graphics, but mainly because of his descriptions at the back(futuristic weapons…). Is this still a photoshop contest or is it a commercial language competition?
I’m sorry, but I’m genuinely annoyed by that comment, flareationalist.
“Photoshop is art, not marketing” – wrong. Photoshop is a tool that can be used to create either art or marketing materials. I do have an (albeit brief) background in commercial design, true, but I still consider myself an artist and try to apply myself artistically in my work, even when I’m doing commercial artworks.
As for your tirade about my “clever, surreal strategy”, if PSDTuts wanted to host a contest that was wholly about /fine art/, they would have posed a subject that /wasn’t/ commercial – i.e., a video game cover. They would have asked us to paint an expressionist scene, or an interpretative piece, or something. And, since art is all about interpretation, I could very well have slapped a red square on my canvas, said some pretty words about composition and won anyway.
I’d also thank you to have a bit of grace. You have talent, but you still lack experience and could do with a bit of humility about your own abilities, instead of blowing your own trumpet like you’ve been doing.
I entered this contest to have fun and to test my abilities. I have nothing against criticism, but I’d rather do without your petty slander.
I beg the other readers’ pardon for cluttering the board with this, but I had to speak my mind about this.
no… I don’t agree AT ALL. the first one was actually very good, whether he had designed the entire box or not, it deserves first place. second, don’t get pissy because you didn’t win. third, how would you feel if you won and somebody said “that one sucked! mine shoulda won!”. you’d be pissed, right? you’d think they were an ass and should keep their mouth shut. same principal applies to you, pal. you just look like an ass. fourth, I strongly disagree with your judgement of your own work. the layout is not original at all. it looks like iRobot meets the Call of Duty: WaW cover. it’s blue, it’s a silhouetted soldier wearing a helmet staring straight out. I haven’t seen other entries, so I can’t judge, but if it were up to me, I’d have picked many others over yours for shear lack of originality. and lastly, the comment “I think I should have had a better chance at winning” makes no sense. every entry had an equal chance at winning, yours included.
also, I don’t like the third place cover. the first place one was good. I wouldn’t buy the game cuz it looks… weird? but the art is great.
I have never touched a single video game related product for my entire life, so sorry, I do not understand you questioning the originality of my work. I had no absolutely no reference when I created the piece other than stock and pieces of tutorial on the web.
I was just saying that it looked similar to the CoD cover, whether you’ve seen it or not. so I guess it’s original to you… not so much to people who have seen the game I’m talking about.
I agree with you, the winner was not the best!
The winner is not the best but the “sixth” place one is pretty bad, its iver worked and unorigional. Personally I like 11 and 12 also the 2nd entry is pretty decent.
Congrats all!
I was hoping to at least be a finalist… maybe next time!
You should have been a finalist, the skills used in your robot piece is far above the current winner
Thanks… I was actually thinking that one, or one of these would have made it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40747505@N07/3785738115/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40747505@N07/3777076884/
Oh well.
The second one is awesome!
Thanks!
i think yours with the robot is way too close to killzone and fallout3.
yeah I agree….
Nice works… Congratz to everyone!
Just in case if anyone’s questioning my previous comment, the first place winner cover only won because it came with cd covers and it could not have won by the cover itself. but the making of cd cover, back cover, case does not require any advanced PS skills. If the judges are considering them as a factor to how they judge the entries, they should at least include it in the contest description. The mood in second place can only be felt when you stare at the cover for at least 5 seconds. THe third place is truly a winner, it’s a contemporary, surreal and very skilled piece of work.
I have to agree with you… i think there’s some much better choices up there for first place…
Very true. It would have been nice to know that they were judging quantity over quality.
The work you made (the sixth image) and the 3th place is way above the level of the others. I don’t get it either why you didn’t got a place. I think this choice was made by very few. But don’t let that get you down. Congratz to the winners because they, ofcourse, deserve it aswell.
I disagree. The first place work was phenomenal; its craft was in many ways ingenious. The model he has there on the cover is holding a camera tripod, which he then modified to be a three-barrel gun, according to the flickr page for the winning image. You’ve gotta admit, that’s clever. All of the little screenshots he made from stock images of soliders and scenes, changing the lighting and adding creatures to each one to make them feel like they’re all from the same game. As far as photoshop work, the first one is the only cover I could actually imagine seeing on a shelf; every other one listed is amateurish and feels unprofessional. Yes, that includes the sixth entry and the third entry.
I’ve to agree with Aaron, the first one has a great style, and execution. It just feels like a gamebox. The third one looks quite boring to mee and I actually can’t agree on someone who saw “far superior technique” there. The sixth entry is neat, but it just makes no sense. As a customer, what should I expect? It just looks cool, but it neither feels like a game cover, nor like a game at all.
To me, the second best entry is this one, which sadly wasn’t an entry at all:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40747505@N07/3777076884/
Just looks cool.
I agree with Aaron. #6 is neat, but it doesn’t really show what the game’s about; it’s just a guy with weird flappy skin (?!) and cables (???). Besides, the typography is just weird.
#1 is simple and to the point. #2 is too, quite interesting. #3, meh, seen better.
The only ones from the featured that I’d vote for are #5, #9, #11 (which is brilliant, btw) and #12. The rest just missed the point.
Good Job Guys, I just want to know if my works was considerated. It’s not appeared on tag seacrh
Finally the results are here.
Kudos to the winners and the honorable mentions.
It would be awesome if they could make a tutorial on how they made their cover. (esp. 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th)
Congrats!
I read the first place winner’s submission when he was another scream in the void and saw that they used mostly a 3D rendering program.
I really liked the second place winner’s entry while browsing all the entries, and for the same reason; it felt like a real video game.
I wish I had discovered the contest sooner. I found out about the contest on the 2nd, so I had a very limited time to work in, but entered anyway. I kept refining it until today and it’s still not fully done. It’s miles away from the first one I entered.
There were some excellent entries in the contest. Ah, if I had known I’d be competing against such skills I probably wouldn’t have gone into this field for a profession….
I must say, my spirits are rather dampened by the negative posts as well. I understand perfectly that not everyone thought my entry should have won, but the fact that many commenters made unfounded and rather personal remarks irks me to no end.
I freely admit that there are better designers than I here on the site. That I won is as much a mystery to me as any of you, but the judges have made their decision, and they have their own criterea. It’s completely unnecessary to make judgements on others’ artistic ability.
I appreciate the congratulations to myself and the other winners, and for the the entrants that weren’t selected who accepted it with grace. Humility and realism is what makes a good designer, and if you’re in it for the fun of it, there’s no such thing as a bruised ego.
Congratulations to CorPaige and stebrfc again, and to everyone who took part.
For some reason, that post appeared as a reply. My bad!
As for skill, Gaby, it depends on much more than just that. Hundreds of very talented designers go unappreciated daily. If you have tenacity, humility and realistic ambition, you’re already on the way up.
Congrats Quintin!! And ofc CorPaige and stebrfc!
Wow all of those are really nice. Congrats Guys/Gals!
Congrats to the winners! Great covers guys
There was much better works in PSDtuts+ fkicr group. In my opinion real 1st place must be work with some nice effects, with interest idea, and also it should draw attention. From these 3 point only the third is executed, but others . . . no coments

Hey, I think my cover should be at least in the honorable mention!!
-> http://www.flickr.com/photos/40793547@N05/3755989445/in/photostream/
(look the images I used, lot of work to have that result)
This one is looking great, why isn’t it in honorable? http://www.flickr.com/photos/dzaini/3753549169/in/photostream/
yup, I really like ur entry, at least better than the winner
who care if you think that yours should be in the honorable mention, don’t matter how many images you used, the skills suck and then it did not come up on the list.
Thats how we do ste! Soccer Art / Ole ole Represent. Shame about the third spot thou XD!
Some very cool pieces created by all, congrats all!
I dont’ find that the first place work looks very interesting,it looks very professionaly but not soo interesting, I think…
kinda agree with you guys… I saw much better works during the contest and 1st and 2nd one were not my favorite at all…
congrats to all of you though…
very nice covers
btw. noooooooooo! mine is not placed
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40990994@N05/3785098988/
however congratulations to the winners
your is really cool. i like it.
Can’t believe I overlooked this one – it’s excellent!
I love the contrast and the composition… although I must say that I missed the skull concept right at first.
The next contest should allow users to vote…these are not a serious representation of the best covers…sorry they’re just not
i agree with you about the outcome. but when you make a voting you dont get the best cover. getting people to vote for a bad cover aint very ahrd at all…
Indeed, these judge(s) were most probably very few and the outcome seems very subjective because the first 2 have a very similar style.
I rarely comment on sites, but i couldn’t help but to do so this time. The first place design is very well made and honestly looks like a game cover. It may not be as ‘flashy’ or ‘photoshopped’ as the others, but just looking at the covers.. i feel it really does look like a game cover. The title of the game is big, clear and visible and it uses very contrasting colors which would attract my eye is on a shelf. I feel it may not be the best design in a tennis match, but it is a strong design as a cover for a game. It honestly looks as if I have seen that cover before in the store. I do feel other great, if not better entries were notable mentions 2, 5 (cover 2), 8, and 10. But overall everyone did a great job. Now I’m off to look in the flikr pool!
The only thing wrong with the first place winner, in my opinion, is the model used. Its a teenager in a beanie, wearing a T-shirt. Sorry this just doesn’t scream military, which was bolded in the description.
I’m also curious about the use of the screen shots on the back page. If it was one of the reasons it was considered the winner, seems like the images would need to be credited as well.
this contest is just a crap, a celebration of bad taste graphics… I saw so many honorable entries, really, but some you put in, come on, these are your friends and your little brothers… And the winners ? WHERE IS THE ****** BRIEF ? Is it a ” there’s a precise brief, but only to empty space in the page ” contest ?? I’m disgusted with that contest, that site, that atmosphere, and i’m pretty sure i’m not the only one…
i agree…what a load of crap
The first place detailed all the box and cd this is very important, when you make this kind of work the most detailed work always win.
all jobs are great !
by the way… WHAT WAS NOT HONORABLE WITH THAT ? http://www.flickr.com/photos/26153128@N05/3784634069/
it’s really good work!
These are my fav’s as well:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26153128@N05/3784634069/
(a how-they-do-that look and great classical pyramidal structure very Raft of the Medusa)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23884264@N04/3772561609/
(awesome photo manipulation work)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dzaini/3764930420/
(perfectly subtle with a very genuine “can-see-it-on-the-shelf” quality)
But… contests and awards can be very subjective, its art! not an exact science. While it comes down to technique a judges “design palate” plays a part as well. Try entering for awards that cost you what the first place guy gets to spend and more and losing to a design that’s not so great, that’s tough love! But in the end these designs are like are kids no one likes to hear their kid is ugly, even if you know it’s not true.
and congratulations to the winners!!
I agree… yours was my bet for first place. You deserved a mention, at the very least.
Did anyone else besides the winner do back covers?
I did, although mine kinda sucks:
original cover: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29714886@N06/3780100583/
back cover: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29714886@N06/3780101661/
collectors edition: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29714886@N06/3780102509/
I would love to see anyone else’s back cover. Also please tell me at least one person is going to do a tutorial on how they did theirs. I would.. but noone would want to read it: HAHA!
http://godsgimp.deviantart.com/art/Delta-Dawn-DVD-Competition-132106945
neil patrick harris, what?
Congrats Quintin!! major chuffed for yas
And ofc CorPaige and stebrfc
richie evans
Take a look at their description of the winning entry…
“The author has gone above and beyond the contest brief by providing a realistic-looking back cover with a blurb and game style screenshots, and a CD cover design. It’s a package I can genuinely imagine picking up in a game store. Overall the author has created something that looks like a game cover (paying mind to texture, shadows, and layout! Fantastic job on this design!”
Comments:
- They did not mention anything about the FRONT cover which is the most important part of the whole packaging. Come on, you wouldn’t pick up a game because of a good looking back cover.
- No doubt that tons of effort have been put into it. Great packaging; but not the focus of the contest.
- Unfair especially most of the entries were judged only by the front game cover.
Conclusion:
Maybe if I made a 2 minute trailer together with my New Dawn movie poster contest entry, I could have won.
true.
Sorry but people don’t buy games because of the front cover. Selling the product would be considered most important right? When people buy games, they look at the front but immediately turn to the back because they want to see the actual game-play screenshots, what the game is about, how many players, etc. That’s what sells not the front cover!
yes, but that wasn’t the contest… the contest was to design a cover.
Some really nice works. Congratz to the winners and honorables.
The boy on the winners cover makes me laugh.
Maybe the reason why none of your entries were picked is because you can’t handle yourselves professionally? Honestly, there is no need to whine and complain. If you don’t get picked then you just move onto the next thing.
My favorite is the red skull made of weapons. It really stands out amongst all the “me too” mute colored Photoshop composite covers.
i really agree with you.
The winning piece was uploaded on the 4th of August on Flickr. While it was said on the contest page they had to be submitted before August 3rd: “Entries must be submitted to the Psdtuts Flickr Group pool before midnight August 3rd, Pacific Eastern Standard Time.”
Am I missing something?
I had a lot of fun making my piece. And congratulations to the winners. Although, I have my doubts too. Would you really pick those up at a store, next to let’s say a Fallout 3 or a GTA4 box?
It was submitted on August 3rd Eastern Standard Time and therefore was eligible. Thx. If you’re in a different time-zone, then it may display a different date for you.
is that the only answer you can give on all comments??
why don’t you explain the reasons why the winner is the winner?
what is so special on the winner’s cover?!
im very curious about your justification!!
I was kinda dissappointed not to have a price, but not even get a honarable mention?
I’ll stick with the tutorials, contests I will not participate anymore, seeing (not all) bad results get off with the win.
Im so shocked with the 1st place winner
there’s so many good entries out there…including this one
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41050668@N05/3783743987/
and this one
http://www.flickr.com/photos/reround/3752876145/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40810155@N07/3786773256/in/photostream
i really dont know why? or its just me…
“a military theme”….what the heck…
anyway…I still respect the winners, congrats!
1st place winner not really convincing…Im sorry
IMHO…
if I see a game cover like this in the store…I will not pick it up
Congratulations everyone. #6 looked great.
Does anyone else think that the statue of liberty and the Russian chopper in entry #7 look A LOT like they were taken from World in Conflict? Maybe I’ve just played that game too much…
Well the Statue of Liberty kinda looks like the Statue of Liberty. I wouldnt call it a rip off in any way no.
haha, good call
In the game the Soviet Union invades Ellis Island with Mi-24′s. It simply reminded me of the game, and the way in which the models are rendered are similar as well.
It’s still a nice cover though.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gaksdesigns/3768451826/
^^ not even an honorable mention? ^^
..ah well, Congrats to the winners and everyone that participated!
It was fun, take care guys!
one typo:
Under second place winner, it says:
And the third place winner is NAME.
It should be:
And the SECOND place winner is NAME.
I got that typo fixed. Thx for pointing it out.
guys… don’t get me wrong, but if the only reason for winning this contest was, that he made a back and a cd label, then that is just wrong. when i brief everybody to design an nice oven and they come up with a business plan for a french 5 star restaurant, then it may be nice for them, but not part of the contest. it is very unprofessional and unfair for the other people who posted “only” a cover to even mention this as a good thing to have, since you didn’t ask anybody to do this.
even tho all three look solid, the only convincing one imo is number three – as said about 20times before… it has something, that the other two dont have – it has a character. and im not talking about paper boy right there… seriously, in a good game you play with that guy maaaaany hours – he has to have a soul. place one and two look like 5$ bargain pieces.
by the way, none of the two fits perfectly together… translucent gradient clouds, blured charcter in the front, not fitting colours and a bone chilling typografy. i’m actually gettin mad right now, just writing that.
maybe im just confused because some of the artworks and artists you promote on your site are actually very good, and the outcome of this contest is very dissapointing.
i know you dont really care, but it is kinda interesting how many people disaggree with you.
funny, a kid with a super soaker and some bevel and emboss… now im boiling – wish i could play some ‘delta dawn – the singularity’ right now -.-
p.s.
sry quintin, plz don’t take it personal. it’s not bad or anything, but their was better and espacially more creative stuff posted. but you deserve credit for putting that much effort in the presentation, it obviously paid off.
100% agree.
im boiling because of the results!!
some of the shown covers are just bullsh*t, sorry for the hard word, but its a fact!
if i would deliver something like that, my boss would fire me directly!!
and, it was mentioned that ONLY a COVER has to be delivered…nothing more. and so you dont have to rate something else!
its absolutely ridiculous!!!
LOL, at this contest, really…
include everyone = more sponsors = more money
thats why the one who achive the “amateur” looks always win.
show some respect to the people who spend hours on their entry PSDtuts.
I think the same…
first place isnt that good
and place 2 and 3 didnt even the right thing:
a game an a table or something, i cant see something like that
dissapointed
more cool contests?
i dont get it. a game and a table? like… chess?
Wow, 1st place is awesome. I think the author deserved to win.
Some really great entries here. Congrats everyone!
Hi all,
first of all congrats to the winner!
unfotunatly I didn’t get any feedback on my entries, so if you like tell me your thoughts. this was my first participation so i’m looking forward to any comment that helps me to improve

best wishes,
yours captain n. !
interesting.. wonder why such good entries weren’t noticed..
They’re not my favourites at all, but they´re nice jobs anyway
(the last one kicks ass)
so, congratulations to winners
see you in the next contest
Wow, i didn’t know it was a copy-paste competition.
Disapointing.
I like this one though.

either way, last time i entred something.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/40923444@N02/3772080007/
its very curisous, that the winner is probably the most active person on psd tuts…and his work i would do in about 30 minutes….
YAY! Quintin won! Great work dude! You were the most active member in the whole contest and your design is KILLER!
Thanks a lot, man – I appreciate it!
The only thing I would change is the guys outfit. He looks too casual.
I’m rather disappointed at the comments from people here. Seems like a lot of sore losers if you ask me. I know there are a lot of good designers out there but you know what, that alone won’t win you a contest and that alone won’t get you a client.
You need to Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)! That’s exactly what the winner did. Keep it clean and professional. The WINNER did that too. Oh and one more thing… GO ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT IS EXPECTED! For those of you who obtain enough clients to make a leaving, you know that last one pretty well.
Thank you for echoing my sentiments. This is a contest on a tutorial site and has absolutely /no reflection/ on who the best artist is, or who would succeed more in a professional environment. Such things are so subjective, anyway, and depend on far more than just technique. If I thought the contest were about elitism and snobbery, I wouldn’t have entered.
In the end, it comes down to the effort put into the design and the judge’s impression of it. I worked long and hard at my design, and I’m happy beyond words that it earned me “victory”.
Way to go everyone! First place is excellent! Not the biggest fan of the cover, but I can see why you won. Its a polished, complete, finished piece.
As for the other art work I loved 7th and 8th place. If the artwork for 7th or 8th were placed in for 1st I think we would have an even stronger finisher.
Good job everyone!!
Congrats to the winner. but i dont think its the best cover tho. only thing i dont like about it is the dude, he looks like a surfter or something like that. other then that its real nice..
great covers people
real winner is number 6
