Congratulations to our winners! Great job to everyone that participated in the contest. I'll be contacting the winners shortly to assist them with collecting their prizes. The winners should keep an eye on the Flickr email boxes for the next couple days.
Some More Great Entries
There were quite a few entries that came very close to winning. Also, there are certainly more good entries submitted into the contest that are in the PSDTUTS Flickr Group. Here are just a handful more that really captured our attention. Also, feel free to submit a tutorial concept for your contest entry designs. Many of the posters I saw would make great Photoshop tutorials.

Great posters guys…was just glad to take part in a really cool contest that enabled me to flex my photoshop skills!!
( )lowpop January 7th
well… It’s not a ” i should have win ” thing or else, really not. I’m not that kind of guy. But i think the winners are far, very far from being the best entries… It’s just MY opinion, i’m not judging anybody or else, but… I don’t know, for example, the second entry really suffers of a lack of finition, and many things don’t work in this image… The third one : WHERE THE HELL IS THE POST APOCALYPTIC CITY from the contest guideline ? ” In this movie the setting is a post-apocalyptic cityscape.” it’s psdtuts words… And… How could i say that properly.. none of the three posters would be accepted as a poster movie for a hollywood blockbuster… i’m kinda mad about that, because people, including me spend hours & hours to produce high end images , with real concepts and real ideas, and when i see the three winners, i’m sick. And, as i already said, it’s not because i’m sad i lost the contest. Just because it’s obvious something is turning wrong about it. Thanks reading me.
( )leanne phillips January 7th

Really please with my less than obvious design, lacking an actual cityscape, winning 3rd spot.
I think a shout out to rasterboy for his design which it appears didn’t get a mention and actually I rate quite high: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rasterboy/3113618115/

( )John Wu January 7th
These were… pretty amazing.
( )Tanaka13 - Créations du Net January 7th
lots of very nice compositions there! congratulations!
( )ViniMan January 7th
Deserved winner. A well done dramatic and cinematic scene, with an awesome light & color setting.
( )Evie January 7th
I think my favourites were the first one and the last one – they were way better that some actual movie posters.
( )Justin January 7th
great artwork but some of these need help in the typography department. terrible kerning on some.
( )Margaret January 7th
Very nice designs. Though I have to say some of the typography isn’t that great. Congrats to the winners!
( )Simon Page January 7th
@lolpop – have to agree that the 2nd entry wasn’t in my top 5 but your design is far from perfection – the light sources are all over the place, and to be honest the composition doesn’t grab me and have any intriguing value to sell it to me (my eye is initially drawn to the fully sun lit building which isn’t damaged?) – as with your opinion this is just mine.
I also agree that I don’t think the three including mine are that great as hollywood blockbuster type posters but I don’t think they were purely judging on which would be best to sell the film. I did other designs (popular one with a gas mask) which I felt were stronger in terms of actually being used as posters for a movie.
( )Alex Mitchell January 7th
Congratulations to the winners and well done to the runners up.
( )Thought all the entries were fantastic & loved the competition!
CheDesigner January 7th
Congratulations to winners!
I won’t talk about “deserve or not”, see you in next contest!
Happy New Year!
p.s. sorry for my bad english, I’m still learning it.
( )Jonathan January 7th
I think the bio hazard earth one was cool.
( )Dean Francis January 7th
Some good photoshops in here, but about 90% of the typography is hideous
( )Chris January 7th
i agree a bit with lowpop – it does seem like the guidelines for the contest as well as the terms and conditions were thrown out and not really even considered. I thought “an apocalyptic city” was a requirement? And all images had to be royalty free with proper usage rights — unless the producers of Day After Tomorrow licensed that image that was used — and linked to in the submission, which many were not.
I absolutely love the design with the pyramid but not sure how it relates to the contest theme.
anyway – congrats to everyone. I think a few of the runners-up were more deserving but oh well. next time…
( )Alex | Blogussion.com January 7th
Very cool competition, awesome entries.
I’m guessing spelling counted in this contest too? It says “Extintion” :p http://psdtutsarticles.s3.amazonaws.com/contest_2009_01_01/n.jpg
( )PeterJ January 7th
It’s been great following this competition – thx PSDTUTS
The guidelines said that the world could be unrecognizable “so far in the future that the world is unrecognizable?”. So as long as it displays some part of a world that is fine in my books man. I love the fact in the 3rd place one makes you think, unlike the others which are blatant.
My favourite was actually another design done but the designer of the 3rd place winner (http://www.flickr.com/photos/52128710@N00/3139227091/).
There were also some designs that I think should of been displayed in the runner-ups that weren’t.
All in all a great competition and next time I’ll get round to entering!
( )sova January 7th
Where does it say it HAS TO BE a post apocalyptic cityscape? Nowhere. It says it MAY BE like that, but in the end it also says, and I quote: “You call the shots.”
“Will it be a gritty cyberpunk fight-fest or set so far in the future that the world is unrecognizable? Is it animated or live action? You call the shots.”
sova January 7th
I just wanted to add the fact that the movie “The Matrix” also takes palce in a post apocalyptic environment, but the poster shows nothing like that.
I guess the question is about interpretation. The guidelines, as I now noticed, indeed talk also about where the movie would be taking place, but does that neccessarily mean the poster should look like that? Well, maybe to some people, maybe not to some people.
I guess the only thing we can reccommend to the ones holding the next contest, is simply to turn more attention to the guidelines and rules.
( )The ones right now are apparently too arguable.
Chris January 7th
It says “In this movie the setting is a post-apocalyptic cityscape.” In my mind that doesn’t say “but if you want to completely disregard that it’s totally fine” even though they don’t have “HAS TO BE” in all caps. Why have any guidelines at all then? They also took the trouble to link to the tut with the city being destroyed so that was another hint.
And yes Sova if this were a real poster for a real movie then — totally, no need to have a city. I’m just talking within the confines of a competition is all.
( )iamkhayyam January 7th
Wow… this was a great little contest! Too bad I haven’t checked my RSS feeds in ages
MARK ALL AS READ
Starting over and following PSDtuts like a religion now
Best.
( )Skellie January 7th
@ Chris: As others have pointed out, the information in the description was to inspire your concept, but there were no ‘must haves’ in the poster.
( )AJ January 7th
WOW, some really awesome ones up there!!!!
Don’t really get the one with Triple H with vampire teeth though, it’s rather funny.
( )Sean Hodge January 7th
Congrats to the winners. Thanks everyone who participated. And Skellie mentions above that the description was to inspire and for you to have fun creating your own concept. I hope everyone enjoyed the contest. I appreciate all the feedback as well. Thx.
( )rasterboy January 7th
I definitely feel that many of the runner-ups were more successful overall in terms of technique, polish and concept than the winners. Design is a client facing discipline and the most important aspect of the profession is to meet goals and expectations. This being a “design” contest I would imagine the suggested themes and its interpretation as well as the technical execution of the concept would be key factors in determining the winner.
The winning group seems to be a randomly selected mix of entries without much thought to the actual “design” or execution imo. A prime example would be simoncpage’s winning entry – although a polished and well executed piece I feel that his other entries were much more successful (as mentioned by himself) in reaching the assumed goals of this contest. It almost seems like the contest should have been “who can come up with the best fictional story while tossing in a poster.”
Anyways, not to sound bitter mind you – I just wanted to point out questionable aspects as mentioned prior to my own comment as I see a lot of entries in the runners-up that deserve more shine than the first or second place winners (no offense to these winning designs.)
That being said, great job to everyone involved and congratulations to the winners. Long live psdtuts.
( )Simon Page January 7th
@PeterJ – thanks, that one was my favourite too and got the most pink stars on flickr (not that I was counting lol)
@rasterboy – your right I think it all depends on how you interpret the guidelines, a couple of my designs were way off the mark which, I knew, I just went with the inspiration I was getting – which I think is what they were looking for but not everyone realised – look forward to seeing your awesome designs for the next competition! Is there one lined up?
( )NdRew January 7th
wow, what a great picture…
( )How come???
Share your knowledge please, cos im a newbie in photoshop and i wanna know more about it..
thx a lot
Adam January 7th
Next time the winner should be decided by public vote. Period
( )aMs January 7th
@rasterboy, by selecting winner you cannot satisfy everyone. the jury had it’s own rules and expectations.
( )insic January 7th
Great job to those who win and who participate.
( )xedner January 7th
Congratulations Horizon Fire! Well done. Leaves me with awe.
To rasterboy, lowpop, chedesigner: your works are really amazing! they’re the real deal.
Thanks PSDTUTS!
( )I’m looking forward for more competitions like this.
MiroARRR January 7th
Gratz to the winners
( )First one reminds well of “I AM LEGEND”, but the one with the chinese portrait (with military hat) could have done this too with some more work on typography. GG’s awy
Matt McRae January 7th
The quality of the work here is stunning, well done to all those involved – I only wish I’d had the time to submit an entry myself!
Definately check out simoncpage’s other posters, they’re all fantastic – well done on getting third place mate
( )Carlo January 7th
Holy Sweet Bananas!
You guys are great, these posters are waaaay better than most of the official posters of some movies nowadays..
And I’ve seen a lot..
Keep up the good work and congrats to you all!
( )Paolo January 7th
congratulations to all winners and other artists. i’ve only to notice, for my personal idea, that there’re some great similarities between the 2nd place and this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/ikydesign/3115136959/sizes/o/in/pool-613394@N22/ which is mine. look at the date. i’ve to say that is quite obvious that the 2nd place is surely better but… anyway, let’s go with another contest
( )Isis January 7th
The winner deserved it, but I think there are better posters for 2nd and 3rd places.
Loved the last one (except for the tipography) and the military girl. I think they’re representative for our nowadays blockbusters porsters.
But everyone made a very good job, and I can see a lot of hints given by PSDTUTS in the works.
Congrats for everyone. I’ll try to participate next time! ^^
( )Topflysecurity January 7th
congrats to the winner..
must been hart to choose with so many good posters.. i personally think my was the best.. lol jk
it was fun doin this.. i hope there gone be a contest soon, that is a superb way to test you skillz an creativity..
( )seemore January 7th
beautyful works!!!
( )congrats all …
himangshu January 7th
NO#3 has to be the 1st winner. its great and balanced in all proportion and i think truly reflects the theme
( )all are great entries though….wish i had joined the contest
Px January 7th
I like the last and the one with russian style lady profile most. Well done…
( )Pearl January 8th
Good to see from the Russian style profile entry that “Oakley” sunglasses are still around LOL.
I think number 3 is an awesome composition and the runner-ups need a course in typography.
Nice competition lets have another one!
( )Etagon January 8th
My first participation to a contest and i get the second place…I’m so happy, thank you.
I worked a lot on this poster experiencing some new stuffs that i never done before like working with fire for example.
I know that my entry is not perfect and i am agree with some people that wrote that there is a lack of finition, some problems with the light sources or the composition and i know i can do better…much better!
I think the jury also took in consideration the amount of work for this contest…i don’t know.
Thank again and i enjoyed a lot doing this – can’t wait the next one.
( )sean steezy January 8th
Great job everyone, they were all really good!
Congrats to the winners! Party time excellent!
( )SpeakFlames January 8th
Well I must say that I am not agree with the jury… first had at least a dozen images that had more work to third place, I do not want to detract from anyone, but I disagree …
These were my favorites to the throne:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33869557@N03/3158676003/sizes/o/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26420992@N02/3148523828/sizes/o/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/diegomattei/3138028921/sizes/o/in/photostream/
I don’t understand these two pieces appeared even to be mentioned that… there are some that are well below them.
It’s just my opinion I am not own the absolute truth.
( )ThaClown January 8th
Nice!!! Great job guys!
( )Chris January 8th
@Adam – that would be interesting, to at least have a member favorite by site vote or something.
( )AGA7 January 8th
personally I like the 3rdp place winner. Good, quiet execution.
( )taksan January 8th
awesome design!
( )Electric January 8th
Absolutely great artwork. Now the winner or the runner up should make a tut.
( )Tom January 9th
Well, after reading through these comments, I really feel like I need to chime in. I have been a working designer for over 20 years, and as a person with design management experience, I have to say that there are many problems with the winning entries. The work itself is fantastic! It all looks really good. There are some basic typography issues, but I see that a lot, so I’m not going to harp on those. On the whole, the winners look great, but they don’t work with the theme of the project. If you use a phrase like, “Extinction is not an option.” then you need to have that concept illustrated in the piece, otherwise the imagery doesn’t make any sense. Winners one and two show no struggle for life, extinction is not just an option, it’s a reality! Entry three does show the continuance of life, but it violates the very first criteria. “In this movie the setting is a post-apocalyptic cityscape.” Any entry not showing a cityscape should have been disqualified. If this was a real freelance piece then the client has the right to decide to modify the criteria after seeing what the designer has done. However, it’s a contest, the criteria need to be adhered to be fair to all entrants. At the end of the day, the judges have the final say and they have spoken. End of sermon.
( )SpeakFlames January 9th
That’s realy realy true Tom…
( )Tasha January 10th
Many congratulations to the winners! I entered the contest as well, and while I really didn’t expect to win, it was great design exercise, not just designing myself, but taking cues from other designs submitted. It was excellent practice, and I hope that I’ll be a lot more polished for the next contest to come!
( )Steve Forbes January 10th
I agree with Tom, very fine point there! None the less some great work! I definitely think no1 wins on the basis of attention to detail! Congrats!
( )Chris January 10th
@Tom – well said.
( )John January 11th
So I was just wondering, in a true post apocalyptic cityscape wouldn’t there be hardly any city left? and kudos to horizonfire, in a situation in which humanity was instantly wiped out (i.e suddenly disappear) then what is depicted in his picture would become a reality.
Gz to all winners and runners up some truly amazing work there
( )Cruze January 14th
I have to agree. The Gas Mask Poster was my favorite, I could even see thats as a poster for a upcoming movie or game cover that would make me research further to see what it’s about.
ALL of these were great pieces of work.
So… when do you guys start the tutorials?
These type of tutorials would draw in lots of traffic since they are originally done by the members here. Hack… even if you make them plus only… id buy the subscription for member tuts instead of ones you can find on most blogs.
Just my 5 cents.
( )Simon Page January 16th
I’m planning on doing a tutorial on here – just not sure which one to do it on?
The Gas Mask Poster?
