1. Joshua M. Smith

Representing: Orlando, Florida

"Hydro74 is a Orlando based designer, otherwise known as Joshua M. Smith. The soul purpose of my career is to push the boundries in doing what I feel is relevant to the market as well as extract various elements and trends to be able to offer them up in my own personal work. But let’s be honest. I do what I love because I love it. Not because I have to do it, nor am forced to do it, but rather passionate about doing what I do. I firmly believe in having set style tones, yet a sense of diversity to make any various project unique to the demands that are set forth."

This guy just has an awesome portfolio. Im sure I have seen his work before, on TV or in print maybe, but i can't place where. The majority of this design and illustrators work goes in Flash and Photoshop if you can believe it. You really need to see his whole portfolio to get a better idea of his creativity.

15. Aaron Sikstrom

Representing: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada

"Aaron Sikstrom has a cool illustration style that mixes child book style illustrations with a touch of something more. I think the combination of illustration style and her bold use of color is really makes her work stand out from others who do similar work."

16. Adhemas Batista

Representing: Los Angeles, CA, United States

18. Jake Souva

Representing: Binghamton, NY, United States

"Born of two loving and artistic parents, I was always drawing things for the sole purpose of having them immortalized forever on the fridge. Thankfully, Mom and Dad valued the making of art (even if it consisted of random scribbles that would never look like a mandolin playing platypus, or whatever the topic was at that moment) and encouraged me with kind words. I later discovered the joy of Maurice Sendak, Bill Peet, and Dr. Seuss at the library and fell in love with illustration. Middle school cemented the love, when I found out that the ability to draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could make you popular (if but for the moment). All of these early memories of illustration drove me to Syracuse University, where I received my BFA in Illustration."

19. Marc Sarmel

Representing: Detroit, MI, United States

Marc Sarmel studied design at the College for Creative Studies. Today he uses his design skills mostly in an artistic manner. His work has been showcased in a number of galleries. He has also started a shop where he creates prints and clothing from his work.

20. Steve McGhee

Representing: Woodstock, Ontario, Canada

"Born and raised in London Ontario Canada, I grew up wanting to be a fireman... But as luck would have it, my teachers in Elementary and High School noticed that I had “artistic ability”. In grade 8, as I left the comforting walls of my beloved Lord Nelson Public, my homeroom teacher, Mr. Webster wrote in my yearbook, “Most likely to be designing cereal boxes”."

Are we sure these artists are “top”? Sure, it’s 100 pieces of interesting art, but to consider these guys (only 1 gal) the top of the game seems rather presumptuous. Especially considering some of the great painters that Gnomon employs to show how to digital paint.

It’s definitely an interesting list that will direct many people, but I think the title should reflect that it’s merely a large list rather than a list of “Top” artists.

As an aside, most of the artwork seems to be more about the popular styles in graphic design and less about commercially viable graphic design.

is it just me or is everything starting to look the same…. ? no one varies that greatly in style from what someone else has done. techniques are pretty much all the same…. flip thru Hi Fructrose every now and again and something different pops up.

don’t get me wrong, it’s all super impressive, and they’re all so talented. I just… guess I’m just…. getting bored w/this movement of rainbows and starlight and grunge and gloss. maybe I’m just going through some things. maybe I’m being overstimulated.

Im female, and im going into film animation. and it scares the crap out of me.
trust me, ive hunted. theres very very very few well known females in the artistic buisness out there. ):
