Regarding the question number 1, I think that some Photoshop related posts would be nice. Free plugins, actions, vectors, brushes… Maybe combining them with tutorials, you know, “Using plugin X to get Y effect”.

About number 2, I would choose web design: titles, buttons, typical layouts and effects… Anyway I *loved* the tutorial of the “Photoshop compass”. But I think that variety on topics would be better.

And what can I say about feeds… well, just offer both!

I just want to say thanks for the effort you put into this site. It looks great and the tutorials are very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to find out what your readers want. As far as tutorials I would really like to see a tutorial on how to use the pen tool it seems to be the one tool I really have problems with.

I really enjoyed the glow tutorial because it’s quick and fun, but most of all because you don’t see a lot of ways to integrate paths into Photoshop images very often. So I personally would love to see more vector/type based Photoshop tutorials.

Also, a specific one about different things you can do with custom brushes?

Hey. I’m into vector graphics alot. I would like to see something that started in illustrator get moved over to photoshop. Or, stuff that starts with photoshop vector tools and makes stuff.

I also would like any tutorials about web design in photoshop. I’ve used fireworks lately because I find it so fast to create basic layouts. And its easy to select elements. But maybe its just because I don’t know photoshop so well.

So, those are the areas I’m most into. I really liked your tutorial on glow effect. So, I certainly enjoy other topics as well. That’s my 2 cents.

Looking good man, I like the fact that you don’t seem to cover a ton of overdone tutorials, I see a lot of basically the same thing over and over on a lot of sites. Of course I’ve been using PS for over 10 years so more advanced stuff is definitely what I’d like to continue to see.

Some combination PS/web stuff would be nice, just not a bunch of the “Web 2.0″ effects, I see those everywhere and although on occasion they can be nice (and I won’t say I don’t use some of them) I enjoy originality a whole lot more than trendy effects.

As far as full vs. partial feeds I like full a lot better but can understand using partial feeds to get more visitors to the site for commenting, etc. I still tend to be of the belief that good tutorials will get you good comments either way, partial feeds may help but w/ visits but full feeds leads to more satisfied readers.

Whatever you decide just keep the great inspiration coming, you’ve found a loyal reader in me either way!

Cool site, finally someplace where the tutorials aren’t completely evident and old, there’s really substance to your stuff. Anyways I’d like to see tutorials on making contemporary elements, not just whole compositions.. ex. I’d like a really good swirlie tutorial, not many of really good swirlie tutorials out there, stuff like that, how to either paint or to do a good trace of ink blots etc. I dunno if u do vector, but what i’m fishing for is if u had both, this would probably be the ultimate free resource, right up there with bittbox. i have never found a real good way to recreate leather.

from textures to 3d leather like edges (hopefully you know what i mean) and the stitching in there also.

This is the most viewer friendly site ever, the colors used in this design gives the site a “Like Home” feeling. Also it’s easier to read the Post, i dont know why but it just feels more confortable.

things like free Pro fonts/brushes/vectors (GoMedia etc.) is also very useful cuz internet is full of crap in these times

ad 2) I thing it would be great if you keep very wide spectrum of articles so everyone can find what he likes. Btw it often happends to me that I found some useful tips in art-related tutorials which I used on web layout for example.

1) I voted for “Yes please”, but I’d like to add that I think it would be good only if it adds something useful that other sites haven’t covered. Smashing Magazine has TONS of “top ….” lists and so do many other sites/blogs. It’d be pointless to rehash the same sites over and over unless you’re actually adding new ideas.

2) I love how the compass tutorial was for a complex graphic. I think it’s a great way to learn several different techniques at once. So many tutorials are for just 1 specific effect, it may be hard to visualize how you’d actually use it in a complex graphic.

3) I prefer full RSS feeds so I can read it all in my Google Reader, but I can understand if it’d be more useful to have partial feeds to the actual site gets more traffic. I don’t know how viable it would be, but I have seen some other sites offer the option of subscribing to either a full or partial feed.

I have loved all of your tutorial’s so far, I found your site linked from Digg.com and its amazing! Like most, I loved the glow effects one in particular, and the Clear text one, but they are all really great reads. I am just a PS beginner and this has really opened my eyes to the power of photoshop, I feel Ive been thinking too 1-dimensionally about my images.

As far as a tutorial that would interest me, I was thinking about how to make cool backgrounds for a website or that could be printed behind text on printouts, cool images that are soft and make good backgrounds. How to make them anyway!

This is one of my favrourite sites. I looked at it once and added it to my reader. That said, I’d love to see some non-tutorial type info. I’d also like to see tuts on creating from scratch as well. Firstly, THANKS for such a great site and for sharing your knowledge with others! Occasional non-tutorial posts would be just fine as long as they don’t deviate much from the site’s main focus. And range of tutorials could be as wide as possible, as long as it deals with PS. As for RSS feeds, both partial and full would be good. Or you could give visitors an option where they can choose what suits them.

Also, there is another something which you should consider – your site’s overall contrast (text vs BG) For readers with visual disabilities, the low contrast text is quite difficult to read. Perhaps you could consider making the text color more brighter.

Collis, Great job on all your tuts. I too found you via digg a week or so ago and added you to my rss rounds.

I really enjoyed the “Old-World Look” and “Advanced Glow Effects” projects. I like how they are a complete composition that taught several different techniques over the course of the lesson. Many tuts show you this or that only, having a bunch of methods combined into one cohesive pleasant looking final comp illustrates that combination can result in a truly fantastic finished piece. The simple stuff like Apple-style buttons and banners and the such are neat, and definitely worthy of posting, but the full comps really get my creative juices flowing. Bravo! More please!

Oh, and I vote for related posts too. Also, I’m sure (or at least hoping) you are not hurting for *paid* work. It might be neat to, after finishing a project, go back and tutorialize a layout or comp from start to finish, maybe even describe why you made the choices you did, client input, last minute changes, surprises, headaches etc. Just a suggestion, and something rarely done right on the net.

Please go ahead and make some tutorials for the _design_ of webpages, just don’t delve into any html/css/javascript-techniques, there is enought good ones on the net (alistapart to mention one). Make a seperate site if you want, but there is only a lack of design-sites on the web

How about allowing users to submit tutorials with .psd’s for the site, possibly with you deciding whether it gets published or not. Hey, if certain individuals – not me by any chance – post a good amount of tuts, maybe they can become some sort staff members who post their own tuts. I’ve seen that sort of thing happen on a blog I used to visit.

I really would like to see something more advanced.

Luv the site. Layout is beautiful and very easy to read. I found all the tutorials useful in some way. I did the mac-style background and used some of the advanced glow and message strip technique.

One thing i would like to say though is:
When writing a tutorial, example the one with painting the sun, try to make suggestions on how to use this step in another picture and make more suggestions on how to use the tecniques in other pictures.

I love this site already. The tutorials that I always look for are the tutorials where ‘the next step’ is explained. I mean by that where design becomes art. The cool advanced compositing, the lighting effects, etc. For examples the ‘Super Slick Dusky Lighting Effects in Photoshop’ tutorial.

Im an art student studying graphic design. I love ur tutorials as well as the way u explain each step and I feel that they are at a preatty good level meaning from intermediate to hard. I really like the variety and one of the thing I have been wanting to do is work with glow effects. Ur tutorial really helped me thank you. Now the tutorial u did was on a black background that is totally apropiate because it helps the text as well as the graphics glow more. I was thinking that maybe you could proceed on that with an additional tutorial where u get glowing effect but with different lighting situations where u apply that effect but not on a dark background.

As well, I think it would be interesting if you did a tutorial on creating vines and intricate vector design such as elaborate vine work or decoration. Its obvious that u can get a reference image and trace over it with the pen tool but I think that a tutorial on that would be interesting showing everyone what are different but efficient ways of doing it making it look interesting and dynamic.

I hope not to sound stupid and that everything sounded clear to you. Thank you very much for these tutorials as well as the inspiration.

I think the best tutorials are the ones you write for yourself to document the processes taken to get a good effect. I like the tutorials you do now – I would like tutorials about the more advanced features such as masks and layers and really see where that takes us – I mean for example, just what is a clipping mask and what can be done with it etc – also some of the image adjustment tools may have uses I am not aware of or havent been inventive enough to see
I like the more advanced stuff as it leaves me to experiment more – man congrats BTW on a great site – this is a rare find indeed – thanks to all who put it here – I will be a regular from now on

As for the other questions, i’d like to see posts other than tutorials, as you can, like you suggested, list tips & tricks and other resources.

And I’m always a fan of full RSS feeds. I use a feed-reader as i’m sure most people do. One of the reasons i use this is so i can read posts at work without it looking like im slacking (lol), so if a website offers partial feeds, i dont bother subscribing.

Stick with full feeds… if i want to view the site, and read the comments, i will!

Really awesome website mate I’ve already gone through all of your tutorials and I can say they are of some of the highest that I have seen. The site is also exceedingly easy to read and use as well. Congrats on that also Is it possible that in the future (I have an RSS feed set up) that you can do some tutorials on print techniques? What I mean is, how we might go about sprucing up some print (magazines, brochures, etc…) with some graphics, logos and type? i’d like to see more stuff about paths. is there some way to link nodes in paths so that they’ll always move together? Or to link them so that one node is a mirror of another? Wow this is a great site!, I wish I had found this a little earlier. I think its great to see what you are doing here! I don’t really have a particular request for a tutorial but I will say the Super Slick Dusky Lighting Effects tutorial was great! to see more things like that would be cool.

Several months ago I dugg a few tutorials from psdtuts, and in that time a lot had happened for both the site and myself. Namely, I had to part my ways with my old iBook, and it might not be until winter until me and Mr. iMac can join forces.

That said, it’s been bitter sweet, but I’ve been trying to advance my taste for design, and I have regularly followed FLS, Faveup, and this site. The question you ask that really is important to me is if you should add other content, or resources to faveup.

And my belief is against the poll results.
I feel PSDtuts.com has had some really excellent content, and I particulrarly admire your focus on illustrations as opposed to some myriad of resources. I feel you should stick to those guns for this site.

It’s your guides to making a coffee, a shield, or an awesome text glow effect that set you apart from Smashingmagazine, along with several other pages I’ve come across on Digg, where I expect to find “the best fonts of October.” I come here for one purpose, practicing a great new photoshop project. Just like I go to Faveup for inspiration, or Retailmenot for one purpose, I like being able to come here and focus on one objective which you seem so great at explaining.

In short, I would love to see your attention saved for tutorials here, and perhaps other topics on FLS. And I prefer your original, illustrative tutorials, since, aside from your attention to pixel-level detail and organization, I’m most impressed with your abillity to draw up little characters or objects for each site you make.

I love what you’re already doing! Your tutorials are very helpful, and not only in content alone, but they are very clean and easy to understand. You have one of the most user-friendly sites around, and I love that.

The articles that always get me, and that I would personally like to see more of (and know more about in general) are ones on psychology in design. Meaning how and why certain designs look. “If I see ………….. then I process …………… and hence I want to …………”. Several of your posts are already greatly in this direction. You seem to have a very good understanding of not only what looks good, and what is effective, but why it is effective. I think if more people (myself included) could start thinking from this standpoint, getting down to exactly why things work, we would be better designers by nature.

I’d like to see a tutorial on how to make people look good in photos. There was a photo touch-up post on here before and I think it would be a great follow up. As mega-pixels go up, well…people look a lot more “real” which isn’t always a good thing. It would be a great tutorial to make skin look good in high resolution photos without going overboard and looking look an airbrushed playboy photo. Cheers!

Hey, great tutorials. I am really interested in techniques, on how to make your own creations look more real. How to make different textures (wood finish, cement, metal, rust, dirt, fur, hair, scales, slime, etc.)
Also how to make things really pop or come out at you.

Another suggestion make an AI Tutorial site as well as a Flash Tutorial site. I have always tried to figure out how to make an animated preloader I would like to avoid using the typical boring preloader bar. Also more web tutorials

I’d love to see some stuff on here about using wordpress. You’ve done such a great job utilizing it’s capabilities to bring your site and it’s features to life. Now I know giving a hardcore programming tutorial isn’t what this site is about but maybe just some insight on how you can integrate all of the great effects and techniques you teach into wordpress. What’s the best way to get started? How do you break out of just posting things to having a full blown multi page site that’s custom skinned? Or maybe just some small tips on swapping out images or altering layout. Wordpress’s docs. section can be a bit overwhelming and with all the links in every paragraph it’s hard not to get lost in there.

Could you post a tutorial on how to make the spoon at the top of the website =p

You should write a tutorial on how to create the background effects used on the packaging for Adobe CS3.

I wanted to ask you if you have any problems if I translate your tuts and add them to a blog? I’d link back to you as the original author and creator. The issue is that it’s very hard to find a half-decent PSD/AI tutorial in Spanish with more than 3 steps. Your tuts have helped us heaps in the creative department I work in.

I’m in the process of designing some signatures for CoD4: Modern Warfare, and would like my text to look just like the “Modern Warfare” on the cover (http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/sitedata/fanbase/cod4/v2/COD4_X360_Theta.jpg), with the glowing lines running through it. How would one do that?

I have done a lot of your tutorials, previously not knowing much, now my knowledge of photoshop is expanding. Still not really able to do everything though. I saw a really cool kind of Header image on this website that I stumbled upon. I tried recreating this kind of header image, by looking at your glossy image tutorials. Still no success. If you’ve got the time and don’t have any better ideas, please consider looking at the folowing site:

The header looks very ordinary, but if you look closely it has some very tricky bits. Not talking about holiday season drawings, but the little lines in the background at the top of the header. The way that the red color changes gradually but smoothly is interesting too.

I’ve noticed that the sidebar doesn’t appear beside the left content when using Windows IE 7 (I’m using Vista Home Premium but have noticed on XP and in FireFox). The only page I’ve found so far that has the side bar beside the content is the “Write A tutorial” page.

I believe this is just a simple Width miss-calculation and is easily fixable.

Something not many sites show how to do, is create or edit textures (like wood, or metal, or even toast or something ridiculous). I’d love to see some from here! The tuts here are the best.

Like Fire G I also notice the side bar missing in IE 7, in my case I’m on XP.
Btw, why did get rid of the original brown design, this white background just feels totally out of place, the same with some screenshots.

I had an idea of a tutorial.. One of the photographers out there that has a pretty big wow affect on me is Dave Hill. I thought it would be cool to do a tutorial on how to use photoshop to make your photos have the same affect as his. I have kind of figured it out and have a pretty good idea of how to shoot and then use photoshop to make images like these. You can see an example that I did with a self portrait.

This is a fun effect to use, and usually carries a pretty big wow factor. So, I thought it might be fun for you to do here!

I’d like to see a tutorial on how to create blurry lights. I’m not sure how best to describe it but I believe the look is created when you place a camera too close to Christmas lights for instance. Each instance of the lights become a circular blur. How is this effect accomplished in Photoshop?

I’d love to see you expand into Illustrator tutorials as well.

Hello, I visit this website time and time again, some awesome tutorials and talent you have. Reason for my comment here is that, I came accross this website called Noodlebox a few days ago, and I’ve been attempting to do a similar type of background. But I struggle to get the layers to associate with each other in the respect of blending properly.

Knocking out an image of a person with messy hair from a complex background is making me want to pull my hair out! I need a clear and awesome method to get hair off a background while maintaining the fine details of the hair.

I’m looking for a tutorial on how to achieve a particular text effect. I want to try and recreate the Pussycat Dols present Girlicious logo (specifically the Girlicious text). I take a lot of pictures at little league baseball games. The best pics are during warm-ups when I can get on the field. However, to get “action” shots, you have to take pics from behind a chain link fence. I tried using the tutorial of removing the chair, but it does not look that good. I would love to see a tut on how to remove the chain link fence from pictures.

okay, i need some user/pro help. I am trying to make a logo for this project, “30 Years of Impact” is the tagline, circlular, and I want to make it look “heavy”. Like the 30 Years part is crushing the circle. How do you think I should go about that? I have been messing with stone textures in layer styles and the 30 years part looks heavy, but I think the circle underneath needs to looked cracked or crushed. Help please! I know you guys are good for it
