A Couple of Questions …

Since we have moved to WordPress, this site has really taken on a new element of interactivity. I have to say it’s been really neat reading through everyone’s comments and seeing people giving each other tips and suggestions. So I thought I’d take that one step further and ask you, the readers a couple of questions–three actually…

Before I get to the questions though, let me just say thanks for all the positive feedback! I had at first intended this site to just be an occasional tutorial, but there have been so many awesome comments that I’ve gotten kind of excited about the site. Already I’ve written the next three tutorials and they are on a posting schedule of one a week. And I keep thinking up new ideas now too :-)

Anyhow on with the questions. Hopefully your answers will help us make this a better site!

1. Do you want to see occasional non-tutorial posts as well?

By non-tutorial posts I mean things like “11 Great Photoshop Plug-ins” or “How to Get into Flow to Make Your Work Better” and so on. Basically do you want to see occasional articles or just tutorials? Here’s a poll, just check a box…

2. What kind of tutorials are you interested in?

Mostly I write tutorials as they pop into my head for things I know how to do. This is why there is quite a lot of variety. Anyhow, are there any specific types of topic that you’re interested in seeing tutorials on?

Things like: Web Design, Photo Manipulation, Compositing Images, … etc Or even specific images that you’ve always wanted to know how to make…

Just leave a comment down below, and while obviously I can’t make any promises since I don’t really know how to do everything in Photoshop, I’ll do my best to figure it out!

3. Full Text or Partial RSS Feeds

I initially had full text RSS feeds, but then after a couple of comments I changed to partial. Now there have been new comments saying go back. So let’s answer this once and for all :-)

By the way if you’re like what the heck is this? Basically RSS feeds are a way to keep up to date with what we publish. You just click subscribe on the right and put the URL into an RSS reader. Anyway RSS comes in two forms, either you get the ENTIRE article (full text) or just a snippet and you have to click through (partial)…

I really would like to see something more advanced.

The last tutorial was a little bit too basic for this site, i think.

And compositing just would be a great thing

  2. Eric says:

Collis, great tutorials! Great site! I don’t particularly like tutorials that require you to get plugins or brushes, etc. I prefer ones that are from scratch.

Also, I would be delighted if you had posts about other design-related stuff. Just be sure to have a link to a page with all the tutorials!!!

    Thanks!

  3. Jason says:

Awesome stuff. I’d like to know more about your tutorial and design inspiration.

  4. SnakeJake says:

Luv the site. Layout is beautiful and very easy to read. I found all the tutorials useful in some way. I did the mac-style background and used some of the advanced glow and message strip technique.

I would like to see some more advanced stuff and some vector tuts. Other than that it’s all good.

You can’t please everyone, but it’s nice to see that you are at least making an effort.

Just keep going and I’ll keep looking forward to seeing something new in my RSS feeds. ;-)

  5. Rory Tuuta says:

    Dude thanks for asking us.

Personally I’d like to see things like just basic effects and stuff similar to the glow thing you did please.

  6. Chris says:

I am enamored with this site..the friendliness, the amazingly well done tutorials, the eye-pleasing interface of the site, all of it. There is great talent here. Thank you…

This is great. Awesome work. Keep it up

    ans for Q1. I’ve voted
ans for Q2. All kinds of tutorials..being in everyones interest

  8. Konstantin says:

I am sure someone has said this already but let me repeat that this has been a great site for me to practice and learn some techniques I never knew before. I also find it great that you are asking the readers of what they are thinking.
Is it possible to get recommended links to other design sites or tutorials that you have found helpful? I would also like to see some web page designs.
Keep up the good work and thanks for everything.

  9. WIP.DZN says:

I would like to see more Photo manipulation tutorials.
    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks

  10. Fager says:

I would just like to see all tutorials you can think of, what i’ve seen so far is just great.
One thing i would like to say though is:
When writing a tutorial, example the one with painting the sun, try to make suggestions on how to use this step in another picture and make more suggestions on how to use the tecniques in other pictures.

And i would like to say thanks for an awsome site

    Love your site Collis,

This was the one site that inspired me to get back into using photoshop again!

In the past I saw so many people at Uni using illustrator and making all vector based designs..

Now don’t get me wrong, vectors are fine, but I certainly love the way you incorporate more photoshop then most tut sites.

Love your site mate, you got a number one fan here for life ;).

Also your site is easy on the eyes!

hit me up if u ever need anything :)

    cheers

    Mr LeE

    Hi from Bonny Scotland.

Great site mate, i love the look and feel of the site and to be honest i didn’t even realise that it was a word press powered site which is a good thing i think.

I think some non tutorial posts would be great, specially posts on plug ins and brushes.

I just recently bought a Wacom Volito 2 tablet to use in photoshop and would love to see some tutorials on using a device like this in photoshop.

Keep up the great work mate. And thank you.

  13. Eric Thoolen says:

I love this site already. The tutorials that I always look for are the tutorials where ‘the next step’ is explained. I mean by that where design becomes art. The cool advanced compositing, the lighting effects, etc. For examples the ‘Super Slick Dusky Lighting Effects in Photoshop’ tutorial.

Anyway, just keep up the good work!

  14. Froy says:

    Hi From Colorado Denver,

Im an art student studying graphic design. I love ur tutorials as well as the way u explain each step and I feel that they are at a preatty good level meaning from intermediate to hard. I really like the variety and one of the thing I have been wanting to do is work with glow effects. Ur tutorial really helped me thank you. Now the tutorial u did was on a black background that is totally apropiate because it helps the text as well as the graphics glow more. I was thinking that maybe you could proceed on that with an additional tutorial where u get glowing effect but with different lighting situations where u apply that effect but not on a dark background.

As well, I think it would be interesting if you did a tutorial on creating vines and intricate vector design such as elaborate vine work or decoration. Its obvious that u can get a reference image and trace over it with the pen tool but I think that a tutorial on that would be interesting showing everyone what are different but efficient ways of doing it making it look interesting and dynamic.

I hope not to sound stupid and that everything sounded clear to you. Thank you very much for these tutorials as well as the inspiration.

    Froy . . .

  15. Roger Moore (007) says:

I think the best tutorials are the ones you write for yourself to document the processes taken to get a good effect. I like the tutorials you do now – I would like tutorials about the more advanced features such as masks and layers and really see where that takes us – I mean for example, just what is a clipping mask and what can be done with it etc – also some of the image adjustment tools may have uses I am not aware of or havent been inventive enough to see
I like the more advanced stuff as it leaves me to experiment more – man congrats BTW on a great site – this is a rare find indeed – thanks to all who put it here – I will be a regular from now on

  16. Hi Collis,

Nice work you’re doing mate, I love your tutorials. They are different from all other tutorials on internet.

One good thing about your tutorial is that they have something new and advance.

Topic that I am interested in seeing tutorials on are special effects and interface.

What I mean by interface? please have a look on the following and you will get what I mean.

Mostly more tutorials on how to create corporate 3D logos, which is really HOT right now. (think AT&T logo) Want to freshen up my PS skills on how to do this…can’t seem to find any good tutorials out there, but stumbled across this site. AWESOME tips!!!

  18. TK says:

I love this site! Just keep doing what you do :D I’d love some more tutorials on the pen tool. And maybe some articles on how/where to find inspiration (I’m all tapped out ^^). Other than that I just wanted to say that I really appreciate what you do here. There aren’t many good tutorial sites out there (at least any that are easy to understand like yours ^_^). Keep it up! ;)

  19. MrQwest says:

First off, well done on producing the site, it looks fantastic & the tutorials are great!

I’ve been using photoshop for the last 6 months, and some of your tutorials have been invaluable!

Any tutorials that’ll help me with my web-design would be great :) I’m loving the whole glossy style & also the dirty grungy vector style too, so don’t be shy with those tutorials either ;)

As for the other questions, i’d like to see posts other than tutorials, as you can, like you suggested, list tips & tricks and other resources.

And I’m always a fan of full RSS feeds. I use a feed-reader as i’m sure most people do. One of the reasons i use this is so i can read posts at work without it looking like im slacking (lol), so if a website offers partial feeds, i dont bother subscribing.

Stick with full feeds… if i want to view the site, and read the comments, i will!

Thanks again for a quality site :)

  20. This is a very well designed and user friendly site, not cluttered and annoying like so many other tutorial sites. basically I just throw my readers over at Photoshop Daily Tips your tutorials and they seem to really enjoy them.

I’d love to work together in some fashion- basically I”m more of a copywriter and less of a designer so it’s sometimes hard to know my audience’s needs and desires. Feel free to contact me privately.

thanks for asking your visitors this question. this speaks volumes on the quality content you produce and your expectations.

i vote for more web design and web 2.0 focused websites. the “web 2.0 look” may be a trend to alot of designers, but all my customers want that look.

in business – the customer is always right.

    thanks!

  22. Drewlface says:

Oh my god.. I actually read every comment and written down idea’s for tutorials I might write..

Going to make a selection tonight and see it it’s worth anything to contribute here!

Collin, thanks a million for creating this site!

  23. Daniel says:

Really awesome website mate ;) I’ve already gone through all of your tutorials and I can say they are of some of the highest that I have seen. The site is also exceedingly easy to read and use as well. Congrats on that also :) Is it possible that in the future (I have an RSS feed set up) that you can do some tutorials on print techniques? What I mean is, how we might go about sprucing up some print (magazines, brochures, etc…) with some graphics, logos and type? I’m about to start a graphic design degree at university, and this information would be extremely helpful to me :) Anyway, keep up the fantastic work!! You’ve hooked me for life!! :)

  24. kath says:

i’d like to see more stuff about paths. is there some way to link nodes in paths so that they’ll always move together? Or to link them so that one node is a mirror of another? I don’t know if there is, but it would be pretty cool, so I’d like to know. Or just tips for setting handles to get nice smooth curves.

  25. Andrew D says:

I would like to see more web design tutorials :)

  26. Aidan says:

Wow this is a great site!, I wish I had found this a little earlier. I think its great to see what you are doing here! I don’t really have a particular request for a tutorial but I will say the Super Slick Dusky Lighting Effects tutorial was great! to see more things like that would be cool.

  27. Wade Smith says:

Several months ago I dugg a few tutorials from psdtuts, and in that time a lot had happened for both the site and myself. Namely, I had to part my ways with my old iBook, and it might not be until winter until me and Mr. iMac can join forces.

That said, it’s been bitter sweet, but I’ve been trying to advance my taste for design, and I have regularly followed FLS, Faveup, and this site. The question you ask that really is important to me is if you should add other content, or resources to faveup.

And my belief is against the poll results.
I feel PSDtuts.com has had some really excellent content, and I particulrarly admire your focus on illustrations as opposed to some myriad of resources. I feel you should stick to those guns for this site.

It’s your guides to making a coffee, a shield, or an awesome text glow effect that set you apart from Smashingmagazine, along with several other pages I’ve come across on Digg, where I expect to find “the best fonts of October.” I come here for one purpose, practicing a great new photoshop project. Just like I go to Faveup for inspiration, or Retailmenot for one purpose, I like being able to come here and focus on one objective which you seem so great at explaining.

In short, I would love to see your attention saved for tutorials here, and perhaps other topics on FLS. And I prefer your original, illustrative tutorials, since, aside from your attention to pixel-level detail and organization, I’m most impressed with your abillity to draw up little characters or objects for each site you make.

    great site …..

    hope u fullfill my request …. might b helpful 2 all ……

    bye

  29. Marty says:

I love what you’re already doing! Your tutorials are very helpful, and not only in content alone, but they are very clean and easy to understand. You have one of the most user-friendly sites around, and I love that.

The articles that always get me, and that I would personally like to see more of (and know more about in general) are ones on psychology in design. Meaning how and why certain designs look. “If I see ………….. then I process …………… and hence I want to …………”. Several of your posts are already greatly in this direction. You seem to have a very good understanding of not only what looks good, and what is effective, but why it is effective. I think if more people (myself included) could start thinking from this standpoint, getting down to exactly why things work, we would be better designers by nature.

  30. Tom says:

I’d like to see a tutorial on how to make people look good in photos. There was a photo touch-up post on here before and I think it would be a great follow up. As mega-pixels go up, well…people look a lot more “real” which isn’t always a good thing. It would be a great tutorial to make skin look good in high resolution photos without going overboard and looking look an airbrushed playboy photo. Cheers!

  31. Rodney says:

Thanx again for your support. For many you are a life saver and for that you have won another heart to this fabulous site.

Enuff of that now, please give us more of web design, photo manipulation and photo composition.

  32. hi ….psdtuts is like love at first site..
i am in love with the simple yet impressive tutorials…
is there a way we can be a member of this site…
    Keepup the good work!!

Hey, great tutorials. I am really interested in techniques, on how to make your own creations look more real. How to make different textures (wood finish, cement, metal, rust, dirt, fur, hair, scales, slime, etc.)
Also how to make things really pop or come out at you.

And to answer the other question yes please keep the articles coming, tips are always great.

Another suggestion make an AI Tutorial site as well as a Flash Tutorial site. I have always tried to figure out how to make an animated preloader I would like to avoid using the typical boring preloader bar. Also more web tutorials

Anyway as everyone has mentioned above, great great tutorials, I have only tried a couple.

Is it too late to comment on this post?

I’d love to see some stuff on here about using wordpress. You’ve done such a great job utilizing it’s capabilities to bring your site and it’s features to life. Now I know giving a hardcore programming tutorial isn’t what this site is about but maybe just some insight on how you can integrate all of the great effects and techniques you teach into wordpress. What’s the best way to get started? How do you break out of just posting things to having a full blown multi page site that’s custom skinned? Or maybe just some small tips on swapping out images or altering layout. WordPress’s docs. section can be a bit overwhelming and with all the links in every paragraph it’s hard not to get lost in there.

  37. Marge says:

Could you post a tutorial on how to make the spoon at the top of the website =p

  38. Eric says:

You should write a tutorial on how to create the background effects used on the packaging for Adobe CS3.

    Just a thought…

  39. Diego says:

I wanted to ask you if you have any problems if I translate your tuts and add them to a blog? I’d link back to you as the original author and creator. The issue is that it’s very hard to find a half-decent PSD/AI tutorial in Spanish with more than 3 steps. Your tuts have helped us heaps in the creative department I work in.

I’m in the process of designing some signatures for CoD4: Modern Warfare, and would like my text to look just like the “Modern Warfare” on the cover (http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/sitedata/fanbase/cod4/v2/COD4_X360_Theta.jpg), with the glowing lines running through it. How would one do that?

Also, I just wanted to let you know that you’ve got an excellent site here. I bookmarked it a long time ago and check back for inspiration and ideas anytime I’m starting a new project!

  45. Steven says:

Hey Collis, great tutorials, may I say. Im a big fan.

I have done a lot of your tutorials, previously not knowing much, now my knowledge of photoshop is expanding. Still not really able to do everything though. I saw a really cool kind of Header image on this website that I stumbled upon. I tried recreating this kind of header image, by looking at your glossy image tutorials. Still no success. If you’ve got the time and don’t have any better ideas, please consider looking at the folowing site:

    http://www.blic.co.yu/index_eng.php

The header looks very ordinary, but if you look closely it has some very tricky bits. Not talking about holiday season drawings, but the little lines in the background at the top of the header. The way that the red color changes gradually but smoothly is interesting too.

Thank you for your great tutorials.

  46. Steve says:

I would love it if you could give a tut on how you make a navbar like the one at freelanceswitch.com. How to insert the images in a way that they don’t flicker. Thanks Collis!

  47. Digital Fake says:

I’d like to see some tutorials on web layout, the graphic ones are really cool.
But I have some difficulty coming up with fresh ideas for different types of websites.

Likely usually all what I see on the site.

    Cheers

  48. Fire G says:

I’ve noticed that the sidebar doesn’t appear beside the left content when using Windows IE 7 (I’m using Vista Home Premium but have noticed on XP and in FireFox). The only page I’ve found so far that has the side bar beside the content is the “Write A tutorial” page.

I believe this is just a simple Width miss-calculation and is easily fixable.

  49. Chris says:

Something not many sites show how to do, is create or edit textures (like wood, or metal, or even toast or something ridiculous). I’d love to see some from here! The tuts here are the best.
