ActiveDen and Activetuts – New Names, Same Awesome Content
Oct 19th in News by Collis
For just over three fantastic years FlashDen has been the jewel in Envato’s crown. It is our longest running and most active community, and thanks to the amazing authors who showcase their work there, has become the largest marketplace for Adobe Flash files in the world with over 8,500 items for sale.
Last week Adobe asked us to change our name and URL so that it would no longer contain the term ‘Flash’, which is a registered trademark of Adobe. We know that the success of our sites is about the community and content, not the names. So here at Envato HQ we’ve been busy thinking up new names and we think we’ve found a great new home for both our marketplace and our Tuts+ blog on Flash.
As of today the two sites now live at ActiveDen and Activetuts+.
Hello! I started Psdtuts+ because years ago reading Photoshop tutorials was how I got into design. You can find me on Twitter or on my blog theNetsetter.
The new names amend the use of the word Flash, open us up for adding other technologies and are short and memorable! To kick off the new names I thought I'd round up a few of the best tutorials and items on the sites:
Kick Ass Flash Files - ActiveDen
Without a doubt the leading marketplace for Flash files, ActiveDen has some really popular files. Here are a few of the latest:

More About The Change
You can read more about the change on the ActiveDen Blog or on TechCrunch. There's also a super long discussion thread on the ActiveDen Forums.
I'd also like to take a moment to say thanks to everyone for helping us with the transition and supporting FlashDen through three years of amazing growth and community, here's to many more as ActiveDen!

Adobe are evil

I don’t understand Adobe. Free marketing targeted at devoted users – no thanks.
( )Branden Silva October 19th
What makes it even more silly is the tuts network advertises Adobe in their largest ad on the top of the page. So basically envato had to bend over for them.
( )der October 19th
its because once a tradmarked brand/name becomes used in everyday language, Adobe can lose protection for the trademark — a very valuable asset to the company.

Are you serious?
“Flash” is such a common word, please let me know your thoughts on this by replying.
Saro October 19th
That’s really arrogant. On a other website they sewed them because people in the comments said ‘Photoshop’ instead of ‘Adobe Photoshop’. All envato does is help Adobe sell products and they get backstabbed…
( )efingo October 19th
“…because people said “Photoshop” insted of “Adobe Photoshop…”
I find that hard to believe. Have a link?
“All envato does is help Adobe sell products”
( )This I totally agree!!!

( )Ok, let it be ACTIVEDEN !!!! URA

Seen more of this nonsense lately. Adobe even has some fineprint on their site that you can, for instance, not say “that picture has been photoshopped” but that you should say “that picture was edited with Adobe(r) Photoshop(r)”.
Yes including the registrated characters.
These clowns are destroying themselves. Any other company would be happy to get as much free publicity as photoshop. This is like google saying that you can’t tell anyone to “google that”. It’s ridiculous and nothing but sheer arrogance if you’d ask me.
How would adobe feel if half of their usergroup would jump ship and download “The GIMP” ?
( )Louf Hawkner October 19th
Hey C.44 was your avatar photoshopped?
Haha!
( )Jason October 19th
I love to Flash my Photoshop skills around the interwebs. Once I dreamed of being an Illustrator or an Acrobat, but I chose to get InDesign instead. boy, when Adobe sees this comment there’s going to be Fireworks!
Shinfo October 19th
Half of their userbase uses pirated copies of the software, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if they didn’t give a flying f*** about them.
( )Shinfo October 19th
(sorry about the language)
Louf Hawkner October 19th
You wouldn’t be surprised, sure, but it still doesn’t make rational sense.
Warren October 19th
This seems impossible to enforce, even legally speaking, since the term “photoshopped” is well established as part of the public lexicon. Let ‘em waste money chasing everyone on earth with that
I hate Adobe and I’m not real fond of a lot of Flash implementation I come across. (Not to hurt anyone’s feelings… a much overused, and too often inappropriately or unnecessarily used tool, imho.)

I hear Flash Gordon has had to change his name by deed poll to Phil.

aahh.. i may get killed for this comment so please hold tomatoes until the end!
The company I work for is going through a similar situation so I can understand both sides of the coin about this one.
We have our company name and the product name copy righted so we (the official company) are the only ones who have legal rights to use the those NAMES in web urls, names (like on twitter or facebook) and email accounts. The big deal is that if one of our customers uses these names, its an unfair advantage and can be easily seen as part of the corporate image when its not. They can talk about the product, the company, anything they’d like really. As long as those two items are not in a url, email address or account name.
Ok now really, it is cool to say flash tuts or so forth. But it goes with the legal rights thing I mentioned before. I don’t blame anyone for picking that name, it’d probably be the first thing I think of too!
( )Hurray for Collis & co for coming up with an easy solution. Sure its not a fun one and not the same. But i understand and think they handled it with grace. Good job guys and keep up the tuts (of all sorts!).
(oh and feel free to fling tomatoes now)
Fulanito October 19th
hey! I was just thinking, where can i register a product or name so to be mine and no one else can use it in web urls, and email accounts? is it expensive? thanks.
( )Alvaro October 19th
I actually like the new name, opens a large universe of possibilities like adding more files to the marketplace (not only flash related): Silverlight, Flex, Air and more.
I’m sure that the change will be easier than Eden – Envato previous change, remember?
( )RoaldA October 19th
Adobe sell great products, but what a arrogant bunch of people! This is extreme lame!
( )Not that ActiveDen don’t work, whatever, even thou I liked flashtuts better.
No Adobe is really low life, lameasses…
brian October 19th
Adobe needs to worry about their software and not websites that help make them money. You guys are a great service to the graphic design community and Adobe should thank you.
( )Labec Media October 20th
I agree.
( )Adobe… c’mon. You’re being ridiculous.
kaolti October 20th
I bet this will be extended to extensions too. As PSD is associated with Photoshop if you use it you take unfair advantage of the Trademark…
Hilarious
( )Jason October 20th
And no one else sees the big Adobe banner stretched across the top of the page? I’m thinking a deal was worked out here and Envato came out good.
