One of the best things about working here at Envato is that we have an awesome team of people building, managing, writing, reviewing and working on our sites. Yep, things have come a long way since the early days when there was just a few of us trying to do everything!
Recently our awesome Tuts+ interviewer Emil asked if I minded being video interviewed with some questions put forward by the Psdtuts+ readers. Since no-one really wants to see my enormous head on screen for too long a period of time, I asked my lovely wife and partner in crime Cyan if she’d be in on the interview and we thought we’d put up the video to help celebrate 3 years of Envato.
The Interview
So without further ado, if you’ve ever wondered about how Envato started or about who we are, I hope you enjoy this little interview of us!
YouTube as individual questions
Here’s to Another 3 Years!
It’s kinda hard to believe it’s been three years already! I still think of us as a startup. I can’t stress enough how thankful we are for all the readers, users, authors, buyers, and staff who have helped us these last three years. Something that’s really come home to me since we started Envato is that you don’t build great companies without lots and lots of great people. From all the positive comments we get, the good natured communities that have grown around our sites, the amazing files that get sold on our marketplaces and the kick-ass tutorials that people contribute to our blogs. I know I have a tendency of overusing the word awesome and I am guilty of typing far too many exclamation marks in my day, but hey what else can I say … it’s pretty awesome!!!
So enjoy the rest of our celebrations. I’ll be back tomorrow with some announcements of upcoming Envato sites that we’ll be releasing in the forthcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

Very eye opening.
This is such a great interview. I love how placid and down to earth Collis and Cyan are. Inspiration at its best. Thanks for sharing this guys :)
Great interview and nice to see some an Australian startup being so successful!
Great video! You guys seem like great people and my wish is for your continued success!
Can I ask who did the video editing?
Yo Collis and Cyan, love envato and all of the various sites. I am happy that I found you and will be a customer for life! I respect good design (and wish I was as good as you:)…so I’m spreading the word around here in the states…Later Mates!
What can I say, you guys are too cool and I like your advice for starting sites. I too think this way but am lacking in the dev part of it all. Plenty of ideas just hit the wall when it comes to making them. Any advice on finding freelancers or on how you put all your sites together?
Great interview with merit! The information you’ve provided is clearly inspirational to both beginners and seasoned professional creative minds. As I have been a part of the Envato Network only a short amount of time, I have had the opportunity to view hundreds of pages of exciting information, creative inspiration, elaborate tutorials, etc. Not only has this helped me to become more creative, it’s helped me to reach out and communicate with more of the creative people around the world.
In short, thanks a great deal for the information you and your network provide for creative people like myself. The resources you have put in place today has helped us arm ourselves with great knowledge so that we may inspire others tomorrow with our own creativity!
God Speed On Your Journey To Success…
nice interview … you guys are really successfull persons online and offline
Cool i view this interview today 20.08.2010 and one year has past. I like the hole TUTS+ network, keep the good work, and THX
This is a great interview and gives visitors the confidence that you guys are a down to earth cool group of people. Good luck to your further success!
Wow, other Australians on the internet! Congrats Collis & Cyan, your story is inspiring.
“Our greatest asset is our naiveté” is my favorite comment. Now I don’t even mind only being payed 25% royalties as a non-exclusive contributor! I thought the low rate was greed but now I realize it was only innocence!
Very refreshing and genuine indeed.
At the moment I am going through exactly what you guys went through when you started. I launched http://capchr.com last march, as I designed the site and hired two developers to write the back end code. I learnt photoshop as I went while building the site. Sometimes i do get tempted to raise VC funding.
Thanks again,

thank you!
+ keep up the good work!
Very nice. Thanks !!
Keep your work !
What a shame you steal from people when your products do not work and have the most appaling policy I have ever seen for monies deposited with you…. they lose it if not used within a year… nice… It has taken weeks and weeks to try and get a refund for one of your products that would not download or work… excuses after excuse… when someone bothered to come back to me… I would never ever use or recommend you so why refund back to an account you shut down when I complained to paypal (who will NOT pay out guys as they are downloads so ask for a disk and then you are covered…) this is not good and you are not trustworthy as a company… I am researching a blog to tell the world… but everywhere I find you I will tell the world my experience of your shocking service and dodgy products… thanks Amanda :-)
half Iranian, nicee! can you speak farsi? (I’m persian too)
They can’t pronounce garage. HAHA!
Interview is full of inspiration. i always like to talk about your company with my friends.
full of inspiration
Great interview! Awesome tips for our startup. Also, thanks a lot for the free jQuery courses @ tuts+, they are helping us rebuild our flagship product with a much more stable architecture. And say hi to Jeff Way for us, a great teacher!
Blessings guys!
I needed some photoshop inspiration and found the awesome envato adobe after-effects library, then I needed audio and there’s envato’s audiojungle. Then recently I needed some help with css and looked for some templates and the best were on envato…what can I say but you guys are just doing everything right!
I was curious to find out more about who envato was and why its so great..the video made that clear.
Thanks for the inspiration, well done and go us aussies!
Really enjoyed listening to the interview. It gives a lot of answers to anybody that is trying to start something new as well.
