Very interesting tut. You’re only 15? Wow, what a great start.

Thanks! You can see more of my designs at jakedillard.com

    • your only 15, so what, if your interested in this kind of stuff then you can be 12 and still be good. You make 15 sound so young, like they should be playing in their sandbox.

      • Michelle says:

lol I think he meant its quite an achievement for a 15 year old to be here giving you older roosters a lesson or two ;).

Yea sure younger people can choose to do this if they wish but let’s be honest most 15 year olds just want to hang out with their friends.

I think you are an amazing young man and obviously have an excellent future ahead of you. Keep it up.

      • Cumbrian says:

are you just out to get on everyone’s nerves nystad? By the way, it’s ‘you’re’ not ‘your’.

  2. lawrence77 says:

At the age of 15 I dont know what is computer :D

i hope so its a nice, gonna download…

All the best for ur future, upcoming tuts… ;)

  3. Kevin says:

    Whoa.. this is awesome!

  4. Melody says:

I see a lot of use of 3D related programs being used on these tuts..which one would be the best to add to the tool box?

    • Jake says:
      Author

Most graphic designers use Cinema 4D for cg stuff, because it cost less than other 3D programs (besides blender)- renders fast, and is easy to use. But if your gonna be doing complex modeling, 3ds max has better modeling tools.

      • Palusko says:

Or you can try free edition of Houdini (if you’re adventurous) or Maya (if they still offer it)

    • Anders says:

Try the demos but speaking from my own point of view: CINEMA 4D. It’s easy and extremely powerful.

    • Nathaniel says:

I also enjoy Lightwave. It’s relatively cheap, and has an easy to learn render panel. Modo is also excellent, but really, the key is being able to find tutorials you seem to understand. 3DS Max probably has the most, and from what I’ve seen C4D is a little more prevalent than Lightwave. Not sure about Modo…

    • im just learning zbrush and i love it

    • Stefan Frank says:

I use 3DsMax. If you are getting into 3D it offers you a wide range of possibilities and 3rd Party plugins to enchance even the great given tools!
Cinema is a good program and cost less than 3dsmax but if you buy a 3D program you want to do more and more in 3d. And than Cinema4D isn`t enough.

  5. pixels and beyond says:

aewsome work!! I think I need a 3d tutorial like this.

  6. Margaret says:

Yeah, I’ve really gotta get my hands on Cinema 4D…
although I really should upgrade at home from CS to CS4 first! LOL

  7. Very nice looking effect. Thinking about a plus membership now…

  8. Very Nice, i do love Photoshop & Cinema 4D tuts together

I will make time to do this tut

    Steven

  9. flareationalist says:

Very basic default c4d effects and not extremely impressive even when considering your age. 15 years olds can do much better.

    • spiderm0nkey says:

Holy heck, lets see your work then tough guy. This kid is doing great for his age. ’15 year olds can do much better’… get a grip mate. He’s only starting out in the design world and from what I can see, he’s going to progress very quickly and do very well for himself.

      • Jake says:
        Author

        Thanks spiderm0nkey!

      • flareationalist says:

        http://www.saadart.com/
Saad Moosajee turned 16 this, most works on the site was produced at age of 15.

        http://eigeni.deviantart.com/gallery/
Mart Biemans, almost the same, 16 years old.

I do not understand why this is made a plus tutorial, again, very basic.

      • flareationalist says:

I do not mean to be rude at all. But as you can see 15-years-olds can do much better, and as a matter of fact, 13 years olds can do exceed this level of work.

@ Brian, we are indeed here to inspire, perhaps this young man just needs some inspiration towards realizing one’s lack of technical skills and their need of improvements.

Jake, every word I put on here is honest advice, never be too proud of yourself, as someone said already, 15 year olds don’t play in their sandboxes. just be aware of where you’re at which is the first step in improving your skills

I encourage you to keep practicing, few of your works(3d glass, chaos) shows me that you possess certain artistic abilities, but keep practicing.

    • Brian says:

yeah, stfu flare. idiot. we’re here to encourage and inspire

      • flareationalist says:

I’m trying to teach him the reality, young is an advantage, not a reason for people to be more forgiving about work quality.

    • Haha. This is a silly comment.

    • Megal says:

Who cares if there are other 15 year olds who can do better, that does NOT make this bad. If you are going to criticize him tell him what you would have changed instead of just saying there are people who are better then him. Because lets face it there usually IS someone who is better than you no matter what subject we’re talking about.

      • flareatoinalist says:

Agreed, Jake try to get away from default c4d effects and try some actual modeling. Even with the default effects, you can still take it further.
I’m not saying this is good or bad. because it really depend on who you compare to. All these commenters have little or no idea of what c4d is about, therefore to them, a creation with such realistic shadows and highlights may seem impressive. I’m only trying to help you because to be honest, a real pro wouldn’t bother to comment on such level of work.

  10. Xanadu says:

Hmmmm, where does a 15 year old get an expensive software like C4D…Rich parents or a torrent? Nice tutorial tho.

    • Anders says:

Like I did when I started out, with a student license?

      • Xanadu says:

A student license can only be used for learning purposes. He got paid for this tutorial. Just sayin’. Not a big deal though. Bad economy, no harm no foul.

      • Anders says:

“A student license can only be used for learning purposes. He got paid for this tutorial. Just sayin’. Not a big deal though. Bad economy, no harm no foul.”

Yes, that is a breach of the license but your original question was related to where a 15 year old can get expensive software like C4D.

  11. AEVION says:

Looking at the preview images, it looks like there was a point where your design had more details (and in my opinion) looked better. Sometimes less is more you know?

At the finish, it looks too overcrowded and chaotic. It still looks decent like this, but I think you could make it even better if you were to clean it up a bit.

    • Jake says:
      Author

Which preview images? The one on my website was the original

    • Nathan says:

      @Aevion

The tutorial allows you to be creative (hence the theme of the tutorial) with the effects. If you think it’s too chaotic, then scale back on some of the effects. It’s up to you to find the right amount of effects that you think looks good.

  12. ThE_OwNeR says:

Always like tutorials were Cinema 4D is used! BTW love your website Jake, really clean and nice functionality :)
