Lostnotfound is the creative identity of Saad Moosajee, a young and aspiring designer. Saad was originally born in London, England but is now based in the united states and freelances. Despite being only 15, Saad has still received recognition from magazines like Computer Arts, Idea, and Advanced Photoshop, in addition to working for clients like Oxfam Australia, D.A.T.A, JAB wireless, and Skybeam Internet.

This Plus Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips

In today's tutorial we will be focusing on creating a flowing aesthetic that works great for a Product Advertisement, and I will be guiding you by using an image I created for the Tiger Beer company in Singapore.

Tiger Beer commissioned this image for their exhibition "Tiger Translate." The image ended up not being used by the Tiger Beer company for theme relation purposes, but aesthetically they were very pleased with the outcome. I've decided to share that workflow and process with you Psd Plus readers today in the hopes that you can utilize these techniques when given a product advertisement job!

    Neat Aesthetic!
It would be great on Plus Tutorials if you guys could list all software required to complete the tuts. This looks like it has some 3D stuff… Which is cool, I just don’t have any of the programs or experience with 3D (nor do I have the extended version of Photoshop that includes 3D tools). So I don’t want to waste the time downloading a tutorial if I’m not going to actually be able to complete it.
Although I think it would be cool if you had a site devoted entirely to 3D (if you don’t already…)
anywho, @ Saad, the outcome looks great! And it looks like a good tutorial none the less.

cool, I usually only have a looksy around here and the vector site as those are the parts of design that I focus on.

IMO the aesthetic can be done all in Photoshop. All that is needed is high-res images, and time.

Good suggestion. We’ll work on implementing that with these Plus announcements and our tuts on the blog.

You have to realise that the site can’t be run by itself you know. The more the support, the better the tutorials.

wow i was just expressing how i felt about the site and i was defineatly not paid to do this !!

meh, sorry but this is not interesting at all. overall design looks very chaotic and kinda flat. and what is this bottle reflection in grass for? (lol) beside that, the renders seem badly exposed

i’m sure author has some nice 3d skills but the outcome is tasteless for me

i agree with you that it looks pretty flat.

could u two guys show some of your awsome work?

or maybe u should start doing some tuts to show your skills here…

“this looks pretty flat” means nothing.

      2. PG

        AEVION October 28th

        4 things:

        1 — I have a link to my work, you don’t.

2 — “this looks pretty flat” means exactly what it says. The outcome to my eyes, looks fairly 2D even though there are 3D elements in the design. Maybe it’s just the angle that we’re seeing it from… I don’t know.

3 — I was not insulting the writer of the tutorial, the tutorial itself, or the final image. I was only making a statement that it looks 2D. In a way, this is constructive criticism, because it tells the artist, how he can perhaps, improve on this current design to make it pop out from the page a bit more. I actually quite like the design.

4 — I write tutorials, just not for this site.

      3. PG

        matthew booth October 28th

        lol at AEVION’s #1

        “1 — I have a link to my work, you don’t.”

that was a priceless response. It should also be pointed out that AEVION also has a Gravatar and Garik doesn’t. Not that gravatars yield any greater qualification for critiquing. Just shows they care enough about having a more complete online presence.

I’d have to say that both aMs and AEVION were respectful in their responses. Keep in mind the tut is for a workflow and a design aesthetic just not techniques, so any constructive criticism of the outcome is valid based on the goal of tutorial.

Overall I’d have to say that I like the aesthetic. The only part that is distracting to me is the abrupt change of direction at the top of that “flow” coming out of the bottle. Maybe taper the bottom of said “flow” a little more as well so the motion and the form of the “flow” are more in line with something bursting out of the bottle and then flowing to the left.

Not too sure about the product label around the tiger either. The second label wouldn’t be necessary if the original bottle was larger. Over all though I think it looks like it would be a great tut, especially when everyone remembers that you can tailor the tutorials to suit your eye and style. Results aren’t set in stone.

      4. PG

        AEVION October 28th

Thanks for the defense mate! Ha, I remember when we had a little debate on this site a while back, but I’m glad that we’ve, more or less, come to see things eye to eye.

I’m glad you liked my response… that little muppet needs to back off and stfu!

      5. PG

        aMs October 29th

garik it’s not about us wirting tutorial or making awesome work, we make a standard critique based on each ones point of view. I know when I like something when I see it. I always try to find some arguments why I like or don’t like a design.

As I said, this illustration is flat for me, no depth at all. Colors are fine, but the overall composition lacks something.

I also cannot understand how the client (I mean TIGER) allowed him to make this bottle so small and put it on out of the main focus.

From my experience I never met a client that actually likes something like this. It’s alwyas like “please expose the main product more” etc.
So this design, as “Creating Product Advertisements” is useless, because what you’re advertising is completely not readable.

Although I’m sure it has some nice techniques in it.

        @john mark:

I would think that you would be more pissed off with someone like asdf (his comment is right below.

He offered no constructive criticism, and was rude to the author, and yet… nobody even says a word. Looks like your priorities are a bit off attacking us then eh?

  6. PG

    asdf October 28th

Sometimes I feel like these digital illustrators completely throw out basic design principles. This composition is terrible and the focus is all over the place.

I like the compilation and manipulation achieved, but like the others, i’m not sure i get the point of the grass, it doesn’t seem to fit in to the piece at all. Overall though, I like it!

The reflection on the grass is just a mistake, he should have forgot to delete it. There’s no need to everyone point it. Tut is great – the quality of the final art is up to you, the author only show you the tools.

Not bad, but my first thought is ‘what’s the idea???’

I see many ‘create an advertisement’ tutorials, but the ads have no spine/strategy and just fall.
I know it’s just a tutorial on design, but advertising design starts with an idea, tonnes of different layouts, insights, how could you make it a campaign?

Obviously this is the ad side of me talking, but a lot of graphic designers don’t seem to understand the fundamentals of advertising.

    :)

    Eddye October 30th

Well Mikey, guess what: the author can’t create the idea for you. Just the design. It’s up to you to use this design on an advertising that fits in your idea.
Kinda works like this: You’ll already know how to do it, when you need it.

Thank you Eddye, but I’m afraid that’s not how it works. Yes there is inspiration to fit around an idea, but generally the design sprouts form the idea, not the other way round. Otherwise it’s just lazy :)

Had it been a liquid coming out of the bottle, this ad would have made far more sense to me. Sorry but I really can’t see how abstract shapes and lines fit with beer. I understand the concept but am not too sure it has been executed successfully. However I’m becoming a hypocrite. It’s not the end result that matters, it’s how you got there and I’m sure there are some excellent points in this tutorial.

Now that I have a job I expect to get a ‘tester’ plus account for a month and see what all is involved in this tutorial as well as getting the tuts I’ve had my eye on for months like the neon text one haha.

Perhaps I”ll have something more useful to mention after that. Til then… lol.

I realize it’s just a tutorial, but still the end result should have some aesthetic value, but the result on this looks like a mess. It’s chaotic and lacks meaning. I’m sure the author has talent, but this appears to be thrown together just to make a tutorial, with no spirit of creativity behind it. As such, I see no reason to pay for this one.
