This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips

Mythical creatures have been part of legend and folklore since the dawn of time. These imaginary creatures are often hybrids, or a combination of two or more animals such as a centaur (human and horse) or a minotaur (human and bull). In this tutorial we’ll take inspiration from these fantastical creatures and transform a portrait into a terrifying horned beast. You’ll discover how to blend animal and human anatomy, then add convincing skin textures to really pull off the effect.

A preview of the final image is below.

  3. flareationalist says:

Blending don’t work too well for me.

  4. Chris says:

A very incomplete tutorial. I expected something more in depth.

    • Owen Thomas says:

Did you look at the tuts+ members tutorial?
Why did you find it incomplete?

The final image looks really good! except the mouth looks like it was pasted right on there.

      • Chris says:

Oh, i dont know… How about something better than a couple of arrows pointing at the eyes. or how about how he did the texture on the skin…you know… something better than a bunch of arrows on only two pictures.

        It is VERY incomplete.

      • Ariel says:

A bit of humility would help. You don’t seem to know how this site works. To get the complete PSD + tutorial, you need to pay 10 bucks a month. Obviously they wouldn’t call this a tutorial.

    • Mannie says:

sounds like you either don´t have a Tuts+ membership or you´re being very sarcastic…

don´t love the end result much by the way… this work either needs to be a little more realistic or a bit more ficticious in my opinion.

    • Pet peeve of mine, people who don’t actually take 2 seconds to actually READ the article. It states very clearly up there:

“Plus members can Log in and Download! Otherwise, Join Now! Below are some sample images from this tutorial.”

    • Mulch Diggums says:

      WOW. You are an idiot.

    • jeprie says:

yes, right. you just proclaimed yourself as an idiot. congrats.

  5. First tut i’ve seen in a while that I feel actually is worth the subscription. Thanks.

  6. SoL says:

sorry to say the mouth looks just horrible

  7. André Silva says:

This tutorial is amazing but very incomplete. The mouth is not really good. it looks very plastic.

  8. Isis says:

very good techniques, but terrible base photo! The expression is not scarying, is too fake!

  9. Faiyaz Haider says:

I haven’t had time to sit down and really look into it, but from what I see looking at the final Image, it looks pretty good, mouth part could’ve been worked on a little more. But over all amazing work.

  10. Tim Rizzo says:

nice, but the teeth look fake.

  11. Sjoap says:

Lol, this looks like a plastic devil muppet,… Not my cup of tea,… And to be honest,… Fake =/

  12. WallStains says:

Lotta “all talk and no walk” complainers ’round here nowadays. Kinda sad. Do kids realize they aren’t impressing anyone and/or looking like experts by talking such smack?

Neat tutorial, good effects, mostly good results. The inner mouth, gums and teeth, do feel out of place. But it’s an overall good tutorial with some worthwhile techniques.

  13. fReezypRos says:

    lol )))))))))))))))

  14. Rafa says:

    INTENSE!!!

  15. Steve krol says:

You’ve went the wrong way with this one. The mouth looks like plastic (you should have used stock pictures) And you overdid it on the fx, ‘less’ is your friend! :) Go back to you third picture and go soft on the multiply textures, they make you get fake details on the overall picture.

    S.

  16. Joseph S. says:

What is this I don’t even… Where is my facebook login?!?!111

  17. Jack says:

Good job. Nothing to blame about.

  18. Nathaniel says:

Anyone feel like psd tuts is slipping a little?

  19. I think it’s a great photo manipulation!!! It’s worth taking a look especially on the color correction methods.

  20. I think it’s a great photo manipulation!!! It’s worth taking a look especially on the color correction methods.

It’s not my type of rendering, but it would be interesting to know the techniques!!!!

  21. It’s not my type of rendering, but it would be interesting to know the techniques!!!!

  22. BannerMoz says:

It’s the most scary tutorial I’ve ever seen!

  23. Dumm says:

Good tutorial. Mystique creature are always hard to create. Thanks

  24. Julien L. says:

What is happening, the tuts are getting less and less good these days. Not being negative with this one in particular, but overall I don’t get that wow I used to have with psdtuts. Hopefully it gets better soon….

    • Tyler says:

I think that when you have a new tutorial every day for as long as they have been doing it, they have pretty much covered everything multiple times. That is also why there is probably a lot of the same kinds of tutorial.

Nobody wants to see 50 different ways to make a business card, but there are all kinds of ways and different scenes/subject manipulations that you can make.

      • Melody says:

Agreed. And I think people need to stop acting like someone is going to come up with some revolutionizing tutorial that uses extraordinarily original techniques unheard of…it’s design not rocket science…

The exceedingly beautiful tutorials are far and few..if anything I think these tutorials are great insight into the type of compositions/work you can do…

I’m a worry wart for technique..but if you’re more concerned about the “originality” of tutorials..then it’s probably only best to make your own

  25. Well i would like to say a great work and easy to create a havoc in night alone

  26. Jack says:

    Best tut fof a while.

  27. Hai says:

The teeth is not good. another s very well.
    Thanks

  28. I understand what everyone is saying about the teeth, but everything else looks pretty impressive.

You did a good job Mark.

The difficulty in making a tutorial is limiting the number of steps while maximizing the instruction in as few words as possible. I haven’t read the tutorial because I don’t have a plus membership yet. So I’m sure if Mark had unlimited time and didn’t have to explain every step, the final result of the mouth would have been better.

Besides, if you could follow the tutorial, you could do whatever you wanted with the mouth. The tutorial is about showing techniques to achieve a style, not a level of perfection.

  29. btw Mark, the work on your website is awesome. All the haters need to head on over to http://www.markmayers.co.uk/ before they start talking crap without reading the whole tutorial.

  30. psdbase says:

nice work, one of the best tutorials I have seen in awhile

  31. spiderm0nkey says:

Hahaha… Am I the only one who’s noticed that anytime anyone doesn’t like a tutorial, (doesn’t matter how great the previous ones were) the quality of psdtuts is suddenly ‘slipping’? Goodness me.. Grow up guys. If you don’t like the tutorial, be constructive and explain why. Don’t just say that you think psdtuts sucks because feedback like that never changed anything.

You can’t expect every tutorial that is posted to be something that you’re going to like because it doesn’t work that way. We all have different tastes and styles. It’s guaranteed that you’re not going to like every tutorial submitted here, so don’t go crying that the quality of the work on this site is slipping because they didn’t submit something that suits YOU every so often.

I think the textures on the skin have been executed very well in this tutorial. (Haven’t got around to downloading it to see the involved steps yet) I think that the mouth could use a bit more work in regards to lighting and texture to make it more realistic, however I do find the rest to be well done.

  32. Martin says:

It bothers me that ’PLUS’ is not in the title of this tutorial, as with the other PLUS-tutorials. It’s pretty annoying for those who do not have a PLUS-memebership…

  33. Jack says:

    PDSTuts’ quality iz slippin….

  34. Ecco says:

Looks great, to bad I dont have a plus account anymore

  35. Spilled Salt says:

Something looks off with the gums and teeth. Like it doesn’t match the rest.

  36. babloodmax says:

    Hey Buddy!!!

really this is very creative photography from the above design.. thanks many meet again.

  37. Phil says:

The teeth really dont blend at all.

  38. Pequin says:

Its a fucking tut…a TUTORIAL, look it up for fuck sake, fuck fuckiddy fuck fuck fuck, screw the niceties…all you fucking assholes screaming “FALSE” “WRONG” “Slippin” without once, seriously…just one fucking time one of you assholes could say well here’s whats wrong and this is how you can fix it, just once so we can all learn something and move on…but no, every asshole and their stupid ass ego needs to get in the way of some kind of interaction, knowledge, whatever…to those, fuck you, to everyone else, well done…thanks for the knowledge

  39. I think looks good, maybe the teeth and eyes look a bit out of place but he did a good work on the skin.

  40. Miso says:

I dont see the “balding” part, I mean, I see a change, but i don’t see tutorial. :)

  41. looks nice.thnx for the tutorial

  42. Nichole says:

I’m seriously tired of people whining about plus content.
    “Wahhhh I can’t read the tutorial because I’m a cheap bastard and won’t purchase a membership… WAAHHHH!”

Christ almighty. I’m a mother-to-be with a mortgage and bills to pay, yet I can still “man up” and buy a membership.

    You are all pathetic.

Not a bad tut, Mark. I see a lot of comments about the teeth. Maybe if I get a chance to play with it a little, I’ll see if there’s a way to make them blend more and share with the rest of the class.

    • spiderm0nkey says:

Hear hear. Costs me $13NZD a month and it’s well worth it. I may be tens of thousands of dollars in debt (damn student loans) but this is a useful thing to spend money on, rather than blowing money on clothes I don’t need or having takeaways every day.

  43. jdsans says:

Creature looks like in relation with hellboy

  44. Generally looks good but don’t like the mouth

  45. evilkitty75 says:

it aint lame its kool n i like the fact ur not showin how u did it all
    i like the challenge lol

  46. Brad says:

So – I really needed to know how to make a magical minotaur that gave off sour milk that could then be turned in to horseradish sauce (at one point in my life). Think that could be the next tut?
