This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips
Though I am a diverse artist who works in many styles, my forte has always been mixing 3D elements with photos to create surreal artwork. If you’re interested in such artwork but had no idea how they are done, here is your step through that door.
In this tutorial I give you a crash course on how to approach and create these types of images. Don’t worry, you won’t need to learn 3D since I’ll be providing you with the 3D renders to start. We will simply be compositing and creating a scene with the supplied renders. This tutorial is intended for intermediate to advanced Photoshop users. Get your tablet ready, because you will use it a lot in this tutorial!

War of the Worlds influenced?
There’s another science fiction book that has quadpods that look a lot more like these than the War of the Worlds one do. I read it when I was in fifth grade though, so that was a long long time ago, and I don’t remember what it’s called.
A bit small for War of the Worlds maybe?
Looks like an awesome picture though. Especially if if it’s start to finish.
“A bit small for War of the Worlds maybe?’
Well it’s not a War of the Worlds fan art picture is it, detailing the scale and proportions of the alien quadpods? I said ‘inspired’ where you take influences from things and apply them to your own work. This could be the case here.
Well actually I said ‘influenced’, but hey ho, same old thing.
Salvador Dali influence… amazing painter. I believe it’s “Temptation of St. Anthony”, check it out. Your remember the melting clocks? Anyone, Anyone??!!
Yes! I do!
There was a post-apocalyptic series called The Tripods, written by John Christopher — perhaps this was it?
But those (and War of the Worlds) were tripods, not quadpods (quadrupeds) as you mentioned and these clearly are, so perhaps I am wrong yet again.
It appears to be inspired from Salvidor Dali.
Here are a couple images:

Dali’s creepy looking elephants were one of my favorites.
Ahhh yes so it is, I can notice what look like elephant ears on the image by Jeff Huang. Good spotting! : ]
look really cool
Now going to download.
This guy is good. I’ve seen his stuff on desktopography
Very Salvador Dali – Loving it!!!
Someone needs to convert this into a firery night / war scene, would be a much better outcome.
i like jeffs style..
great tut
Mix of Half Life with Salvador Dali! I’d change the sky a little bit.
VERY GOOD TUT THX
Its nice, but that moon thing is so overused and ruins the picture.
Great outcome, but to my taste, i don’t like the amount of saturation.
But hey, still very good =)
…who says salvador dali? as somebody who studied salvador dali for three months solid as part of an animation project, I can promise you that salvador dali never made anything like this. the spindly legs are reminiscent of dali’s supports (which, honestly, are very seuss-esque), but the entire concept of forign or unfamiliar beings being placed in an empty scenic setting is one that has been used far more by other surrealist artists than dali.
this is beautiful! love your post!

nice, looks real!
like it
this is a plus tutorial? seriously? blow saturations out of proportions, lay down some fake shadows and charge me to learn nothing?…. no thank you. I recall the tutorials from the past that were very in depth and simply mind blowing. Now all we ever see are fantastical photo manpulations and dark grungy images of destruction. I don’t mean to be so harsh but is there really that much of a lack of descent tutorials being submitted? If that’s the case, sign me up and I would love to write some. but please, no more scantily clad women in the woods or castles and waterfallls, there is hardly any use for these kinds of images.
i sincerly prefer 10 tutorials with women in the woods or watrefalls if they teach me some interesting techics that i can apply in my own work…even if i what to do some text or web design . I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE OUTCOME IF THE TECHNICS ARE GOOD!!! I’m tired about people criticizing all the tutorials …learn the technics and apply them in your own work
What is your suggestion then? Apart from whining.
if u are asking me this…after reading what i have wrote…what more can i say???..nothing man…just nothing…no suggestions at all
This man speaks the truth. And honestly george, mess around with PS for a couple months and you’ll have discovered those same “techniques” and a lot more.
Neat. Very cool image. The “elephants” skin looks unfinished/flat. Might go plus for this one.
Striiiiiiiiiiideeeeersssssss!!!!!1
I like Jeff Huangs work a lot, but this is too bright/”happy” for my taste…
Look very nice! Thanks for your tutorial!

I agree with some of the comments above, the sunny brightness works against the image. But making it into a nighttime/fiery war image seems rather done to death as well. The sunny brightness is actually more original. If the planet were invaded by large gangly machines, the weather wouldn’t be bad every day.
This is so beautifully breathtaking to me for some reason. it’s so simple. I found this while in my Intro to Graphics class! Great work!! It’s stunning!
