Tutorial Removed

Unfortunately, the Psdtuts+ staff have had to remove a recently published tutorial due to copyright issues. Claims of plagiarism are taken very seriously and thoroughly investigated. After looking into the matter we decided the only appropriate course of action was to remove the the tutorial in question and withhold payment from its author.

Why was the tutorial removed?

Unfortunately this tutorial closely resembled an existing tut. It’s virtually impossible for us to know this before publishing, but once it is brought to our attention, we research the issue. If determined that a tutorial either closely resembles or copies an existing tut, then we remove the tutorial, as we have done here. Sorry I didn’t act on this sooner everybody, as I’ve just recently got back from vacation. We’re usually on top of these issues quicker.

We hope that potential contributors will remember to:

  • Always credit your sources
When you credit your sources, it’s clear that you aren’t trying to hide something. For tutorial submissions it also lets our editors check that the tutorial is acceptable. Although Sean and I are pretty on the ball, it’s impossible to know every image, artist, magazine, so things can slip by. But if you credit your sources we’ll be able to make sure you’re in the clear.
  • Use common sense
There are no hard and fast rules about copyright. Beware of “rules” like “copying 40% is OK”. There’s no such thing. And remember that even aside from exact words or images, it can be the idea or principle. In this case, the images of the tutorial and wording were all original, but it was still apparent that it was not an original tutorial in itself.
  • Err to the side of caution
I’m no lawyer, but whenever I’ve dealt with lawyers, I’ve learned that they are always more cautious than I would be. If you think something might not be OK, then trust your gut and don’t do it.

We understand that there are only so many images that can be created with Photoshop, and similarities are bound to occur. However, when a tutorial appears to have been overly influenced by or copied from another tutorial then we must respect the creative work of the original author, as we would want the creative work of our own authors and community members to be respected.

We hope you enjoy the creativity displayed by the authors of the other 150+ original tutorials at Psdtuts+! And the many more that will come in the future!

Sean is the Psdtuts+ Editor.

Thanks for the tut anyway. I appreciate you have really tried your best. The idea and inspiration was nice though at the end it didn’t pop. I think the redish dashboard did not match at the border it touched with the yellow body. And the white to black gradient below ‘MotorWorkz’ was not appropriate. I will not complain about the link font selection. But I think they should have some subtle effects to pop.
    Nevertheless nice try

    This tutorial…………………. sucks……..

Have PSDTUTS completely neglected their non-paying users? What a shame.

By the way, as Johnson Koh points out, this tutorial sure looks a lot like the one he links to.

PSDTUTS. You’ve f**ked up this is time, but everyone f**ks up once in a while, so i forgive you. I just hope this isn’t the new standard, that PSDTUTS gives it userbase.

If you want people to pay, this isn’t the way to do it!

  3. vincent says:

Come on guys, it’s been a long time with good tuts and although the end result of this one is weird it doesn’t mean all is falling apart… Try to be less negative, and as Alex said, try to leave some REAL feedback.

  4. Erik Draven says:

    Please Collis, come back!!

BTW, this tutorial don’t learn me anything new… sorry!!

  5. von says:

Your Message…This, to me, is an inspiration.
At least now i’ll have the courage to send some tuts here.
If this kind of crap can be published here, then i might as well scour the web for shop tutorials and call it mine, submit here and get paid.

  6. Skunkie says:

Yeah, it´s also a rip! How bad is that?

  7. peixeladdict says:

from the “about” page on this website:

“PSDTUTS is a blog/Photoshop site made to house and showcase some of the best Photoshop tutorials around. We publish tutorials that not only produce great graphics and effects, but explain in a friendly, approachable manner.”

so that resume why people are unhappy with this tutorial, we expect high-end tutorials and results, as the website itself claims.
There’s nothing wrong with this tutorial, it just doesnt reach the usual standards here.
it’s disapointing , as we obviously ALL love this website – otherwise we wouldnt care reading/leaving comments, right? ;)

  8. noam says:

buuuuuuuuuuuuu COPYRIGHT!!! copying is for noobs!! shame! smahe no you PSDtuts!!

and its a sucky tut :/

  9. Jarryd says:

    Ahhhhhhhhh the PAIN, THE PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Phil says:

C’mon guys, why the flames. Dont like it, dont use/read it.
Author, thanks for your contribution and keep on going m8.
    Where’s the love?

  11. jbcarey says:

Seriously…. he got paid for this???

Dude, get out of here and don’t come back….

  12. Que says:

    @ Johnson Koth -

What bothers me is you mention this tutorial possibly ripping yours… but taking a look through your site, I couldn’t help but notice the similarity between this 3d type tutorial you posted ( http://10steps.sg/photoshop/create-a-3d-flowery-text-effect/ ) and the original Nik Ainley tutorial that spawned many copycats ( http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/features/index.cfm?featureid=1617&pn=1 ). So please consider not posting a complaint next time if you do the same thing (not that it’s bad to get “inspired”… it’s the biggest form of flattery in some cases… but being hypocritical about it is not cool). Thanks!

    @aleso:
If you’re writing a tutorial or technical article for consumption among your peers, you need to check your ego at the door and wear a cup. I’m a professional developer, and if I took criticism personally, I’d be fetal in the corner. You glean from your feedback and learn what not to do next time. Like, maybe, not write another tutorial.

  14. remmac says:

everyone makes mistakes, i think in retrospect psdtuts wouldn’t have posted this tut, but it fires up the discussion about quality. so in the end, psdtuts knows what their readers expect, and weighs the quality against a higher level of experience, creativity and originality.
I often think about writing a tut, but these comments make me humble again…

a good discussion is also a kind of tut right?

  15. Kris says:

    WTH??

    Vrooom Vrooom.

  16. james says:

That is a crap.. was it made from “paint”

  17. lars says:

Thx really a nice tut! Gonna use it at my site

  18. Anthony says:

    Great Tutorial kabayan lucky!
Thanks for your effort. I appreciate this.

    Mabuhay!

  19. Arun.P.S says:

    Nice tutorial. I like it!

  20. dantes says:

    omg, is the end!

  21. Rob says:

I’m surprised that this tutorial is still accessible. In the past when PSDTuts has been made aware of a non-original piece they’ve taken it down rather quickly.

It’s obvious that this tutorial is copied heavily from another (whether that tutorial is also a copy is a pointless debate), and as such it has no place on this site.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality (or lack of quality) of this tutorial – it’s not ‘Lucky’s’ work; he shouldn’t be paid for it or get credit for developing this tutorial.

  22. Listoric says:

Hmm… dissappointing. The outcome looks totally random. You can clearly see that the parts do not fit together. Worst tutorial in weeks. :/

  23. Princeton says:

YES, it definately is based on THIS tutorial:

    http://10steps.sg/photoshop/web-interface-with-car-images/

  24. Ali says:

could i have your mail Mr.

  25. Greg says:

I feel sickened that I’ve submitted tutorials that have been denied, and this one some how makes the cut. This is more worthy of one of those GFX boards where all the ‘signature kiddies’ run around.

  26. Bryan Le says:

What really worries me though is no one from the Envato team has said a word.

    Unless I missed it.

  27. really wonderful thanks for it,

  28. wYh0iUt says:

    I’am not impressed.

  29. espi says:

um… if you’re still studying Multimedia Design and Web Development, better change your prof

this is not good for psdtuts… sorry, but try again and don’t rip off other designs

  30. Aperfectme says:

This is horrible!!! bad tutorial, bad for psdtuts.

  31. himangshu says:

well the outcome is messy and font is not classy,
bt its a honest effort and don wanna ruin it……..

  32. DopySloth says:

    What happened?

  33. Jari says:

I’ve heard psdtuts.com is for quality. This really makes me wonder…

  34. Harvey says:

Yes it’s really a pity that nobody from the envato team gives us a statement on this rip-off tutorial.

  35. Funkfish says:

Damn, people are mean. i checked the tut out when it was up. But damn, So many hard headed and NOT open minded people. A piece of advice for those who mock a fellow designer, either good or bad. Shut up and do not attack regardless of skill level. And regardless of tut level, This is psdtuts. We all are here to learn. Iv been doing professional design since i was at the age of 14(i am turning 22) and never have i seen so much hard headed people who cannot comprehend that some of the most basic stuff actually is done in some of the most amazing pieces. Take whatever technique you see and put them all together in bits and pieces, use them as footprints in your style. copying others work, is a good training method. But damn.

  36. Nick says:

    It’s removed guys.

  37. steven says:

@Funkfish before you start telling people to shut up you should consider that the people who complained actually did psdtuts a service i.e. the tutorial was removed for breaking copyright. also we are letting psdtuts know that we want this site to keep to it’s high standards. if you don’t like that maybe you should leave the site and visit one of the many crappy tuts sites where people aren’t criticised and where any old plagiarised and useless tut is tolerated.

I for one would rather see this site remain high quality and full of inspirational tuts than let it descend into rubbish for the sake of not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings.

  38. Tom H. says:

I’d like to say that this is a shame…but.

  39. Brian says:

Some of you feel we should give the guy a break, that he is “cutting his teeth”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people starting somewhere and begininng to learn stuff, and sharing their techniques along the way.

The point is this site, psdtuts, is more geared for advanced/intermediate photoshop users. Stuff you’ll say “wow” to. This isn’t a place for amatuer postings or articles. Atleast that’s how it was in the begininng.

That’s why there’s the “outrage”. I did have a plus membership but I let it lapse, and this is one of the reasons why. While 22 bucks for 3 months isn’t a huge sum, it’s not really worth it to get crappy college tutorials.

I would really like to see more text based and effect tutorials. Stuff that the .psd files actually mean something to download. I have the quick gold and metal text .psd files that I refer to repeatedly to get the styles from. Custom brushes, shapes, gradients, styles, textures, etc is worth the money monthly. If these kinds of things were posted repeatedly I would renew my subscription in a heartbeat.

As it stands now this is the first time I’ve been here in about a month, not because it’s all bad, just because there is no “must have” reason to visit the site daily. I don’t think you need to post one mediocre tutorial a day when you could post a couple high quality tutorials per week so we don’t have to drudge though stuff like this. Again I’m not really trying to bash on the guy who posted this, we all start somewhere, it’s just when you’re paying money to join an advanced photoshop site, this isn’t advanced stuff.

I just dropped 130 bucks for Advanced Photoshop magazine. That shows I am will to pay for quality stuff. Like one poster said, up the price to 250 bucks, and then only post a 2 or 3 tuts a week. It’s the same price really, except you now have high quality stuff, and people are willing to pay for it.

  40. Woman says:

Right. So I’ve read through a lot of the comments here and think the vast majority of you are being immature. Instead of ‘oh this sucks!’ or ‘what a crap tutorial’, give constructive criticism. Telling someone that what they’ve done sucks is not productive or helpful. I don’t know what the tutorial looks like as it has been taken down now, but I don’t actually care. If you see a tutorial that you do not think is efficient or even in the slightest bit helpful, instead of making the creator feel like trash over their efforts, say you didn’t like the tutorial and then TELL THEM WHY!!! It’s not hard okay? There really is no need for the low standard of comments and abuse left on these sorts of things.

  41. IPOX studios says:

I agree with NGP and Adam. Take the techniques, add your own images and creativity and make something YOU like. Give the guy and PSD tuts a break. This website rules, and it’s free!!!!! Keep up the good work PSD tuts!

  42. Neil says:

Perhaps the plagiarized tutorials should be on the PLUS account only, and let us mere mortals have the good tutorials that don’t get removed?

I agree with Woman (2 posts above). Most of the comments here are not constructive. I realize many readers/posters may be under 14, but if you’re on this site it’s a sign you’re willing to learn and improve yourself. Improving your grammar and ability to communicate with words are no less important than improving your ability to communicate with visuals.

If you’re not able to elucidate why you feel the tutorial is lacking, your comment is actually empty and pointless. Support your claim.

Oh, and words like “sucks”… leave them to the fifth graders.

  43. Maybe it was a mistake :)

  44. fedup says:

If you ever attended an art school you know how brutal the critiques can be especially when you’ve worked hard. But in those instances, the instructor is actively teaching students how to provide CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM that will allow the artist to move forward. What I’m seeing here in these comments are nothing short of abuse. And I like the suggestion to start tagging tutorials based on skill level but I also support comment moderation as well.

Some of these so-called experts should start writing their own tutorial and maybe we’ll see subsequent tuts follow suit. Enough with the complaining.

    • Shade says:

If the price per a tut was higher, i’m sure the more skilled would more often. At such a low price point for the work it takes to write an expert tutorial, the cost for the time is simply just not worth it in many peoples eyes. I’m just reiterating what has already been said several times within the comments, but i figured you needed someone to direct you to that fact with a laser pointer or something else flashy to pick up on the obvious.

  45. Alexander says:

Please let me know. May I use your tutorials to do my own pictures (which naturaly resemble your ones) and sell them (my pictures) to other people? May I do this with the help of microstocks (Fotolia, Dreamstime, Istockphoto, Shutterstock and others)?
What does really mean your phrase in the end of the page (“The effects and techniques demonstrated in tutorials on the Tuts+ network can be used in whatever manner you wish without attribution”)?
Please let me know. I expect your answer. Thank you, in advance!
