Interview With Martin Perhiniak: Getting an Adobe Certification

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Psdtuts author, Martin Perhiniak. Martin is the author of our Photoshop Basix and Digital Art for Beginners Series, and is an Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor. I frequently introduce Martin as an Adobe Certified Expert so in this interview I decided to ask him exactly what that means.

In our interview we discussed several topics including; how a person can become a certified expert, how you can prepare for the exam, and what you could gain by getting your certification. Martin also had some fun quizzing me with some questions that could be found on the exam. So please take a moment to watch this roughly 40 minute interview and see if I passed the test.

I’m taking a multimedia degree and luckily for us, we get to take all the adobe certification for free and I passed the photoshop one on my first attempt, so I’m adobe certified, I just missed the pass mark for the flash one but will be taking it again.

I just passed the Photoshop CS5 exam Thursday, so it will be interesting to watch this video (with the feeling of relief that it’s done, lol). The one thing I did that probably helped the most: a few days prior, I read the entire 623-page User Guide PDF that ships with the software (downloadable from Adobe also, as well as the PDF for the Creative Suite which covers Bridge and ACR ). It’s ok to skip DICOM and special things like that, they aren’t on the exam. Adobe publishes an Exam Guide with what questions are asked, and that is veryaccurate and informative.

This video somehow never plays right for me. It reaches half way and restarts. Can anyone pull out a few highlights and study material mentioned in here. Really appreciate it.

Ah, and the famous “effect” “affect” conundrum prevails!

    Enjoyed this Q&A

I really enjoythat his video and it could not have come at a better time, since I’ve recently been considering getting certified. I’m happy to see that I got 4 out of the 5 answers correct in this video and the idea of instructing appeals to me as a way of supplementing my income as a designer. Good timing! -dp

    Great work, thank you

Certification is something that keeps coming to mind. Being a Photoshop enthusiast with no qualifications means one of many similar users, but the qualification gives greater opportunity. Thanks for the examples, I’ll take more notice of processes from now on.

It’s always good to put a face to online tutors especially someone that has brought so much valuable tuts and info to us. Great info. I used to debate about being an ACE… you put all those doubts to rest. Thanks to you guys.

    lol nice interview :)

Great vid! In addition to his comments, I would say that I used the Classroom in a Book series and also Lynda.com. I spent about two months preparing for my first ACE test (Illustrator CS4) using Lynda.com. Deke is AMAZING! You’ll learn so much from him.

After that, I only took about a week to study for the subsequent exams. I had all the Classroom in a Book series for CS4.

The help manual is also your friend when studying for these exams. You need to know all tool modifiers ctrl, alt, shit and what they do to the tools. You also need to know how the tool can help you and WHY you should use it. Its not just know that the tool is there but why should you use it!

Martin Perhiniak is very easy to understand when he talks and explains. I’d like to have a teacher like him!!!!

  • javier

I need more experience so I could certify in photoshop still never ceases to practice and expand my knowledge more clear that this is verified when one has more plus on his resume and has more chance to get a good job, I needed to see something like this to find out how one has to prepararce for Adobe certifications

  • claire

It seems like a simple answer to my question. I presume that to become a Adobe design master is needed to take separately the experts exams?.

  • Charles B

@Claire Yes, you receive the Design Master cert after passing Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat.

    Martin,
I have over 1,200 action files and with two monitors I cannot see all of them whenever I need to select an action …

Do you have a suggestion in order to view this many optional actions ???

    Marvin
