I’ve just added a new Plus Members–only tutorial to PSDTUTSPlus written by the super-talented Fabio Sasso, on creating an icon similar to the new OSX Time Machine icon, drawing the image from scratch.
The tutorial is available as a PDF download with a sample PSD file, as well, through your regular PSDTUTS Plus membership. Here’s a full-size version of what you’ll be making in the tutorial:

Join PSDTUTS Plus
If you’re not already a member, you can join for $9 a month or $22 for three months, and you’ll get access to sample PSD files for all the tutorials on PSDTUTS as well as occasional bonus tutorials—like this one.
And by joining the program, you’ll be helping support this awesome site and keep the tutorials flowing! If you’re not a member, don’t worry as we’ll be providing plenty more great content that’ll be freely available here on the site!
You can read about PSDTUTS Plus and its benefits on our Join PSDTUTS Plus page.

hey thanks.. i think paying is fine if you want extra, there is a lot of great stuff here for free, pay if you want the extra dont buy if you dont want it but dont get mad if people spend time on something and dont want to give it away. Thanks for the tutorial you guys have great content
I like PSDTUTES allot and was going to entice my students to get the RSS feed to complete the tutorials as they are they are published, but now I’ m afraid this won’t be the case, our focus has always been to use the web as a free resource, I will continue to promote that finding other similar sites to this one will have to be the case.
I’m sure by selling your PSD files in packs related to the areas you got would certainly earn you more.
Check out: http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/index.html they did it very well.
Quote from RYAN
——I just have to say how disappointed I am with PSDTuts and the whole Plus membership. This was and still is one of my favorite tutorial sites and I’ve been visiting for months. But to now charge viewers $9 per month?? Seriously, what are you thinking? No tutorials are worth over $80 a year. It’s quite a shame that you’re so greedy that you feel the need to charge for a product that was previously free. Yes, this tutorial looks amazing, but it’s not worth $9. I know you’ll probably moderate this comment out, but I had to share my feelings somewhere.—–
Seriously man are you kidding me? You think this guy just snaps his fingers and gets a new tutorial up? Do you think he has unlimited bandwith. What you are saying should be the other way around, you should be happy that some of the tutorials are even free.
You are calling the site/him/ w.e greedy when you are the one pissing your pants and crying because some of the tutorials that these people take time to make, WORK hard on, cost money when all you do is type in PSDTuts.com and mooch off the free tutorials.
As for myself I dont really have a way to pay for a plus account but i think its a great idea and I was wondering why they werent showing plus tutorials to the free users, we need to find out what we are missing out on in order to sign up right? This site is a business man.
–end rant.:P
I’m not a plus member nor i can afford it. still I say:
“PSDTUTS ROCKS!!!!!”
“PSDTUTS ROCKS!!!!!”
“PSDTUTS ROCKS!!!!!”
Collis and the rest of guys are doing a GREAT JOB.
Most people that use this site sell their “designs” to people who don’t know about this site… Everysecond f@#$ing South African designer that has half a brain copies the tutorials straight off and touts it as “original artwork”. (thats seriously crippling the real creatives in SA, and all over the world…) I think its only fair that PSD tuts makes some cash…
People, if you don’t like paying for your tutorials… then figure the stuff out yourself… like the rest of us…
peace

Fabio & Collis:
Okay, fair enough. Actually, it’s great that you wrote a tutorial for yours, I was considering making one for mine, and then I saw this; so you can imagine my surprise.
Keep up the good work.
I’ve cancelled my “Plus” membership due to a lack of original content. This tutorial isn’t original at all, as it’s been pointed out it’s already available for free on another website. I gave you guys the benefit of the doubt, expecting some really awesome stuff but haven’t really seen much of anything worthwhile.
Deleting you from my bookmarks, and unsubscribing from your email list.
Everything was great at first, then they started wanting money for PSD files, now to see new tutorials. Not to mention that half of the recent tutorials have been rip-offs from other sites that belong in the “best of” section (i.e. the vista layout tutorial and this “plus” tutorial). I love this site, but if things keeps heading this way itll turn into another ad ridden, regurgitated, pay for everything site full of crappy tutorials.
@Cain
Collins pays very little for those who makes tutorials for him, and given the amount of tutorials posted a month and how many ads he has on the site Id say he is probably long since making his money back.
How low can you go? Why would we pay for something we probably only do once? If you would ask $2 per month you’d make more profit instead of asking 9… Because simply more people will pay. Delete this post if you want to. I don’t give a shit, you won’t see me at PSDtuts anymore anyway.
What can you do man? you can’t make everyone happy? I’ve enjoined your site, and always check back. I however would not pay the monthly fee since I can’t afford it. But I still think this site is great.
i can’t buy the tut and PSD because im a poor bastard but i tried to recreate the image from what i know and have learned. what do you guys think?
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/3360/timemachinegs8.png
You need me to pay for a photoshop tutorial? No way. Get real. I would rather buy a book
Hmmm… the image looks alright, but I honestly like madBox20’s more. It’s easy enough to figure out how to make that image without any tutorial anyways. Hardly worth paying for.
I guess you guys must not be making that much money on the advertisements alone that you have to start and introduce new business models. It is going to be hard to grasp for your user base, especially with so many other tutorial sites out there that provide all there content for free. Oh well, hopefully you did your R&D to see if this was a good decision to put on your site. Personally I would have waiting a bit longer before putting out a plus membership but that is just me. That and the prices are kinda steep if you think about what you are getting for it.
Anyhoo just my 2 cents. That’s all you get. =P
God some of you people are total losers.
I hate that people find it offensive that someone should make money! Its called capitalism you hippies. Without it no one would put up this site, no one would write any tutorials and there’d be no big companies to pay big dollars to designers who want to spend time developing their craft.
If you can’t afford $9 —- GET A JOB ——
If you can’t make $9 out of all the skills you’ve learned from this site then look at a new profession!
Wouldn’t it be a better idea to just place a Donation button somewhere instead of charging people for tutorials? I’m sure that if people like your website and see you need the money to keep it running, they’ll be willing to donate. I know a great website like this is high maintenance and all, but there must be an alternative for making some money to keep things running around here.
@ Tayfun Ozturkmen: You obviously don’t realize that a lot of people who already have a job need to use the money they make for different purposes of a higher priority than Photoshop tutorials.
Aside from what people are talking about the site. IMO, this site is really a great site. You still have access to the free one anyway.
@Tayfun Ozturkmen
Oh common that is the best come back you can make, using the generic “Get a Job” quote. So if I had a job it is my duty to purchase everything on this planet that has some sense of value to me, no matter what the costs… No wonder why everyone is in debt.
Hey I have no problem with them trying to make some money on the site, hell even adding a plus membership. I am talking about how you market it. How will the idea flow compared to your competition? If there was more than just tutorials and free PSD’s for 9 bucks then I would say it might be worth it. Hell if they added in the option so that the advertisements on the site get removed for plus members, you would have a good deal going on there. Don’t get me wrong as I can see this site does not have that many ads in the first place, but it really should if it is looking for more cash to support it. That or a donation button!
When you start to add up all the costs for monthly memberships for all the services and those little extras some of us are too impulsive to buy it start to become a problem with users that are in debt. I know I am going too far as in the end all marketers really are about is making as much $$$ as possible no matter what the costs to the company or the clients. I guess that is why I am not in that profession.
And to end this statement, I got enough skills to do that artwork just from seeing the final copy, and really it is pretty simple. If this site had stuff like what was on GFXartist.com for a plus membership then the 9 bucks would be a bargin!
@collis: I neer said you don’t have to charge and it should be all free. If you read trough my full post you would’ve read that i actually quite understand while you might want to charge for some content.
My only point was that it’s been pretty clear already that for a modest fee you can get extra “VIP” content on the site. There’s no need IMHO to push it more by actually saying “Hey there non-payer, look at this fine piece you are not getting.”
So yah since everyone is ready to lynch anyone with a different point i’m just gonna put it like this: It’s not that they charge, it’s that they don’t seem to appreciate that some people do not feel the need to. If you treat the non-payers like crap, there’s no way in hell they’ll upgrade to the paid service.
Jason I agree with what you are saying, my comment wasn’t directed at you.
To be honest I haven’t seen many content sites survive with an exclusive membership model. It is too difficult to offer enough to general traffic yet still make a membership worthwhile. I think Collis should pursue some higher level private sponsors. This site easily has the traffic and the user base that fantastic advertising space for Computer Arts mag, Wacom, Adobe, plugin manufacturers etc. Learn to incorporate your advertising into the tutorials eg – use a free sample from a supplier to create a tute and promote the product whilst delivering a great tutorial.
First of all, Congratulations PSDTUTS, you really have a wonderful site here.
Second, to all the people that thinks that all tutorial sites and especially this one should be completely and absolutely free, well, to put it in a nice tone, you are acting just like parasites. Oh yep…. you see, I am a graphic design teacher here in Mexico City, and found about this site through one of my students, thought that it was a great site, and was delighted that at least the steps to follow in order to get a superb image and in some cases even the PSD archives were free, but it didn’t make me angry at all that I had to pay for some of the archives and didn’t caught me out of guard when there appeared some tuts that had a price on them. It just made perfect sense considering the effort put into each tutorial, independently of it being an amateur or expert level tutorial.
Personally, it pisses me off that many people don’t give much value to the work of others, sadly that happens a lot in the industry, and quite a lot in Mexico. Many people think that a graphic designer is just someone that can draw nicely and make the mistake of considering themselves graphic designers just because they have access to a computer with the software that in most cases is pirated software. Therefore they don’t charge enough for their services if they do at all and as clients don’t want to pay a dime for it, affecting the people that, like me and many others do this for a living.
Many should be aware that in this time and age, knowledge is power, so when someone wants to share it for free, well, he or she is considered something of a saint, but if the “saint” wants to charge something for some higher level knowledge because he or she needs to pay the bills, well, then he or she becomes a greedy leech, when in truth is the other way around.
I have not paid nothing for a membership in this site yet, I am planning to do it though, just have to get around some administrative issues, but in the meantime I try to use the available free knowledge out there along with my own experience to think about how they did it, surprisingly I get very similar results without the specific archives or steps… so the people who just wants the info “spoonfed” should start to use their neurons.
Just to end this post, I like to illustrate with an anecdote I read somewhere, it said that once a lady found Picasso in a part at Paris, and asked him if he could paint a portrait of her, he just did the sketch in 5 minutes, and when the lady asked how much she owed the artist, he answered “5,000 dollars, (or the equivalent)”, then the lady said scandalized “but it just took you 5 minutes!”, and he said “No madame, it took me my entire life”…
Just, think about it.
Who knows, in time, maybe I could make myself a tutorial. hehe
hey, dwerg85, weather you agree with the “plus” thing or not doesn’t matter. but if the non paying members couldn’t see what the paying members get, what would get them to want to be paying member. you don’t usually buy other stuff without getting to see what it is you are buying. right? you wouldn’t shop at a grocery store if everything was in black bags and cans that just said what it was on the outside. i don’t really have a problem with them having a “plus” membership or with them “rubbing it in our face”. i just wont be paying
Everyone who complains about paying is just ignorant. If you don’t want to pay then don’t pay. Why complain in a comment section. It won’t change anything. It’s not like you have to pay for everything on here. There is so much free material. I love coming to this site to learn new things. So I can’t learn this now because I’m not a plus member yet, then so what, move on to the other tutorials offered here. Speaking from experience it’s not cheap to run a website and the article that Collis posted is great. If you don’t like it then just shutup.
Awesome site!
Collis, I understand perfectly well the reason why you need to charge for this site, so don’t include me in your list of “people who don’t understand”. I own multiple profitable internet businesses. However, you are charging for a tutorial that can be found elsewhere for free. That was the point. If you are going to charge for something, make sure it’s unique.
With all due respect, your tutorials on this site aren’t top notch ..they’re just well written and very creative, and for the internet, new. If you think people are going to pay 125 $ a year ..well think of your target market; people who cannot afford to buy the books or the magazines, go to the schools to learn the art they enjoy.
Hmm..sounds like someone is going to get fired on your marketing department.
Ciao,
-A real designer.
andrique – lets see some of your tutorials then – psdtuts offers creative tutorials that u can’t find any where else – i think u should make ur way over to tutorialized.
You guys are really something (people who whine about the membership cost and the fact that not everything is free on this site anymore).
It’s been said before, this does not change the fact that so many tutorials are being published as free tutorials, and if you were to pay for a computer magazine that cover photoshop tutorials it would cost you anywhere from 6-12$ per month so what’s the big idea?
I understand you that some of you think you can’t afford it, but come on, anyone that would make money off of photoshop could make more than 9$ that they could put away for the subscription, and no one is forcing you to get a membership, if i were to make money off of photoshop, i would pay for it no matter where i would live.
I live in a country where the minimal wage is 120 euro and i still think i could give 9$ for a potential inspiration that could raise my skills which would allow me to make 2 times that minimal wage.
If you think that the authors are being cheap you get a bill from the internet provider for the traffic that a site like this generates and then i would like to see how you would feel if others would say that you are insane for wanting to make a site bring profit instead of acting as a hole in your budget that needs to be taken care of every month.
I fully support the fact that this should be a paid-for tutorial
Im not a member yet but plan on becoming one – i havent seen any other site which gives such great tutorials for designs / techniques that can be used day-to-day, rather than gimmecky effects other sites have!
No Money…what to do in this case…leave psd tuts
Nice tut, very nice icon.
I do not have PayPal, how can I get this tut?
Hey there, guys.
Are you planning to use, say, one-time fee for those who want just THIS exactly tutorial and don’t want to go into the whole membership-thing?
Why do some of you feel you have to support the paid membership idea? I think it is strange how people feel the need to explain being right. If you think it is a fair deal stay quiet about it.
