Photoshop CS6 Introduces Background Save and Liquify Performance Enhancements

We recently showed you the first sneak peek of Photoshop CS6 by Senior Photoshop Product Manager Bryan O’Neil Hughes. Today, Photoshop Product Manager Zorana Gee released a new video showing even more features of CS6. In this video Zorana will explain two really nice enhancements to Photoshop; Background Save and some performance tweaks to Liquify.

The first feature that Zorana shows is Background Save. This is a feature that many users have been asking for. It will allow you to save your file and then continue working while the file is being saved.

Another fantastic feature that Zorana demonstrates is a performance tweak to Liquify. If you’ve ever worked in Liquify, you know that you can’t expand your brush beyond 1500 pixels. This is frustrating if you’re working on a really big image. In this video, Zorana works well beyond 1500 pixels. In addition, the Photoshop team has also improved the performance of Liquify so that it doesn’t tile. You can now use Liquify in real-time with no lag.

My copy of Creative Suite is too old to qualify for upgrade pricing. Would it make more sense to buy CS5 now and upgrade to CS6 when it comes out or just wait out the CS6 release? Are there enough major changes to make it worth the wait and what is the planned release date?

Do people really use liquify? Cool stuff though.if we can only make photoshop automated.

Retouchers use Liquify all the time.

Oh yes – I do photosession of models, and trust me – Liquify is a gift for us ;)

Yep Liquid is a tool which I need most…

    What about:
    - find layer by name
    - better support for objects (sometimes when I change object canvas size then object break down on original photo…)
    - select some layers by select tool (for example rectangle)
    - change blending options on multi layers in one time
    - grouping layers (but not in folder or lock) to future paste style or select layers in “group”
    - BETTER RENDERING for fonts! (cleartype!)

Grant Do you have any idea when they’re going to release the final version of CS6?!

    Thanks!

It looks like we are finally going to have an even number Photoshop Release that is worthwhile. These features alone are going to be great for those who do advanced photo manipulation, I know that being able to finally use Liquify with larger brushes and in real-time is going to be huge for manipulators and retouchers.

Adobe has really been doing a great job in recent releases of listening to the design and art community and giving us the features we need in our work flows to do what we’ve always wanted. CS5 was the biggest leap in this with things like the new refine edge features and improvements to other selection tools and 3D capabilities.

CS6 is already shaping up to be yet another leap forward, and we’ve seen a lot of things that have been discussed in the Adobe Forums finally being implemented.

Looking good so far, even though I don’t use liquify too much, and rarely have huge files open, this changes probably mean some other features have got a speed increase too. There isn’t anything at the moment that makes me want to go out and upgrade yet though.

I hope CS6 have the magic button you press and then the design just appear on screen like many people think. Kinda need it to keep work hour and cost at a all-time low!

Come on Adobe, fix the issues that have already existed on Photoshop for years. Many are listed in other comments here, and I’ll add another: in PS I can select a text layer and then scroll through fonts using the up and down arrow keys, but in Illustrator (supposedly the best for use with type) I cannot. What gives?

Photoshop also does not play nicely with Mission Control on Mac. Why can’t I assign adjustment layers to folders? Photoshop crashes frequently on my 2011 MacBook Pro. These are just a few among a few dozen issues that have needed addressed for a few years.

How about you pull a Snow Leopard and instead of spending all your R&D on fancy new features for the new buyers, spend just ONE version on keeping your current user base happy.

Some time in the first half of 2012. That’s the only news that I’ve seen so far.

And with a SSD hard drive not just avoiding the appearance of lag when working with photoshop?
