The PSDTUTS "Solving Poverty" Button Design Contest has reached the deadline, which was a few days ago on September 28th, 2008. Our goal is to have the top 10 Button Design winners chosen before October 15th when Blog Action Day launches. Make sure your already submitted entries qualify by providing the artwork in the dimensions needed. Learn more at the jump.
Making Sure Your Already Submitted Entry Qualifies
If you already entered the contest, but didn’t include a link to the artwork at proper dimensions, then be sure to do so. Submit a high quality JPG image at the size of: 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches at 200 pixels per inch. Here is the format link and the corresponding formatting page on Cafepress.
The easiest way to do that is to link to the artwork at the specified dimensions within the description of your entry. This artwork is what goes on the button, not a mockup. An example of the image displayed in the Flickr group is fine, as long as you link to the usable artwork at the proper dimensions. Keep in mind new entries will not be accepted, but you should provide the proper artwork for entries already submitted.
High Quality Entries
There were a whole lot of great entries. Here are a handful to give you an example. If you want to see more search the PSDTUTS Flicrk Pool under the tag solvingpoverty. These are just examples from the contest. We are still judging the entries.
As mentioned above, if you entered the contest, make sure your entry qualifies by providing the artwork in the correct dimensions and format, as required by Cafepress.
Corresponding T-Shirt Design Contest on VECTORTUTS
The VECTORTUTS “Solving Poverty” T-Shirt Design Contest has concluded as well. The 5 winning T-Shirt designs will also be announced soon. You can see all the entries for that contest placed under the same tag of "solvingpoverty" but in the VECTORTUTS Flickr Pool.

3 and 4 are the best
I don’t know about the first one but my favorite is 3
How is making photoshop buttons going to solve poverty?
Stuff like this is so silly. I guess it builds awareness for “poverty”, but there seems like so many other things that could benefit from “awareness”. Breast cancer, battered wives, stuff for our soldiers, cancer, autism, drunk driving, red cross disaster relief, help for underprivelaged kids- shoot I could go on.
Maybe it sounds snotty, but I just feel like there are so many other real world issues where money donations, or awareness would be better spent, on real victims and people who really need help.
the five concept are really nice! congratulations!
@Brian, Hey if you could go on and on with stuff that could help more than this, I would love to see you actually do it rather than complain.
I think this is a great idea and if anything does help raise awareness and concern for those in poverty. Way to go psdtuts and everyone who submitted one
Regards,
Drew
@Brian The point is to get everyone excited about this year’s blog action day.
There is “Awareness for Poverty”
Then there is “Awareness for the Event”
The more people you get involved, the better the event will be. From your comment, I would guess you are already member of many charity events donating your heart’s content, run for breast cancer events, and council war veterans. If not, no point discouraging others who are actually trying to do something.
If you don’t like the way the “blog action day” is being organized. Please by all means do something that will make a difference and come back and I will be more than willing to give you my hand.
Remember the effort needs to be more than writing a comment. It’s very easy to criticize someone and press the “Submit Comment” button.
So where can I order some of those buttons for my backpack?
I like all of these except for #1. That one is okay, but the design is too busy. I personally like the last one the best. Great concept.
@ BRIAN: well, most of the things you pointed out as more important rooted from poverty. Don’t you think?
Theyre all pretty good. Buttons need to be kept very simple so 1 would go out of the game.

Number 3 is omg.. mad beautiful and Cooool!!!
the best!!
I think the best one is definetly “Scratch the Poverty” it makes the most sense and looks the best!
@Brian – Instead of using the $35 to buy the images for my design I donated it to Blog Action Day’s Change.org site.
#5 is best. All nice except I think #3 doesn’t really fit the theme.
Thanks for nice buttons. 2nd and 3rd are really great.
Thank you.
But what exactly does RAISING AWARENESS do to solve the problem? I donate money to the VFW Foundation, and the ACS. Actual dollars.
Maybe this isn’t quite the forum for me to voice my views on this, but how about something more substantial like bloggers donating a percentage of their days profits to some poverty organization.
“If you don’t like the way the “blog action day†is being organized. Please by all means do something that will make a difference and come back and I will be more than willing to give you my hand.”
“Hey if you could go on and on with stuff that could help more than this, I would love to see you actually do it rather than complain. ”
I’ve donated to two of the organizations I’ve listed ($75 for each). Buttons don’t solve problems.

Solving poverty? That’s not a problem to be solved, that’s something that is a great driver and motivator of human invention, creativity, entrepreneurship and desire to succeed.
Solve poverty? Hell, we should have more of it. More people might get a well-needed fear of failure or death in their daily lives and force them to do better.
@Brian
I applaud you for your generosity towards your charity’s, I really do, but as you stated, do you really feel this is the way to go about voicing your opinions? Do you feel these awareness buttons are doing any damage? If anything, I think we can all agree they do much more harm than good
I think PSDTuts goes out of its way to try and do their part for “the public”. I just dont think this is the place to voice your concerns. You could spend this time raising awareness for your issues instead of commenting how these buttons achieve nothing. Not trying to be argumentative, just my opinion.
Best Regards,
Drew
I understand were Brian is coming from and it makes sense. Raising awareness can only do so much, what really is important is if the people you make aware will actually do something, like donate or volunteer.
It’s like advertising, you try to get attention for your product. But if everyone knows about it and no one buys then your going to fail.
All are great designs. The 2nd and the last is my personal favorite, although the 2nd present the Arabic text wrong. Of course other text can also be wrong. I think the designer should have done a little more research when decided to include international text. Great design nonetheless.
@Brian:
I totally and completely understand what you’re saying. I would agree that it’s not really helping to solve poverty, obviously, at least not in the larger scheme of things. However, PSD tuts has done a great job getting people on this site to participate in this, ultimately bringing the bond between designers closer in the sense that we are all participating, or most any how, to create a button bringing awareness. Now, you and I don’t know if PSD tuts or the organization they’re working with has plans to turn one of the buttons into a reality
that’s very possible. who knows. It’s not that big of a deal to complain over
@Drew:
I agree dude.
design wise, i like both 2 & 3, but i think 3 has a better overall message.
I vote for this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/graphicidentity/2882373839/
Well…I just had to have a good nice laugh at my previous comment as I stated “I think we can all agree they do much more harm than good”. Obviously, I meant to make the point they do more good than harm. If you cant laugh at yourself, then you cant laugh at anything
Anyway, Brian, I really do see where your coming from and respect what you have done for your charities. That said, I am also proud of the way psdtuts gives back to “the community.” I think I may have outspoken myself at this point
3rd one is perfect, nice design and straight to the point.
Solving Poverty? Start at home (assuming your home is the States)… Eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian communities are starving for education and basic services such as electricity and running water. The crime rate is unreal for communities with a couple hundred or thousand people and the prescription drug abuse epidemic is disturbing… I guess that’s what you get when a country allows a bunch of bootlegging mountaineers enter the 21st century with great technology such as how to cook methamphetamine on the kitchen stove while your kids help and your wife breastfeeds your newborn.
How are you?, Do something to help the hungry people in Africa or India,
I made this blog about them:
