The First Psdtuts+ Contest Launches!

We are launching the first contest here on Psdtuts+. We have some great submissions coming in regularly to the Psdtuts+ Flickr Group. We’d like to honor some of these top submitters by showcasing their work on the Psdtuts+ Web site and give a prize away to the entry that stands out from the crowd.

About the Contest

The theme this first month is Learning and Applying Your Knowledge. There is no limit on subject matter. We’ll be looking at how you take techniques learned from any tutorial here on Psdtuts+ and apply it in your own work.

Consider the stages of learning. Usually, you do the tutorial and apply the techniques on a similar image. You learn from it. Then you step back and think about how you can use these techniques to create a unique project. You work to personalize what you’ve learned. Then you create an awesome design.

Feel free to mention the inspirational tutorials on Psdtuts+, specific techniques you learned from them, and how you creatively applied these techniques in your Awesome Entries.

We have plans to to offer something similar to this contest every month. Depending on the success of this contest, we’ll keep this going. So, let us know what you think!

How to Enter

All submissions to the Psdtuts+ Flickr Group from now until the end of May are eligible. There is no limit on the number of entries you can submit.

Posting submission to the Psdtuts+ Flickr group:

  • Create your Awesome Entry.
  • If you don’t have a Flickr account, then sign up for one.
  • Become a member by going to Psdtuts+ Flickr group. In the top, right-click Join This Group
  • Upload your submission to your Flickr account and place it in the pool Psdtuts+

If for any reason you do not want your submission to the Psdtuts+ Flickr Group to be considered in this contest, that’s fine. Leave a comment under your submission indicating so. Otherwise, we’re assuming everyone would like to get showcased or be the lucky winner. We want this contest to enhance an already thriving community. This contest is only one facet of the Flickr Group. Someone may want to continue to use the group to get feedback on their work, for example. And that’s great too.

Deadline

You have from now until the End of May. So the last day for all submissions is May 31st, 2008.

You list it as a First Prize. should it not be a Grand Prize because it is the only prize that will be awarded?

  29. Sean Hodge says:

@wtrshpdwn – There is no limit in topic. The focus for this month’s theme is on the process of personalizing what you learn here in tutorials at PSDTUTS. So, we’ll be looking at who applies the knowledge they gain here in the most creative and polished way.

@David Carreira – I’ll look into more prizes. Maybe not for this first contest, but we’ll see what the future holds.

I understand home theme and topic are interchangeable words and could lead to confusion. Focus on reading the About the Contest section. As it explains what we’ll be looking for this month. We’re keeping it really broad to kick things off.

Also, any member of the PSDtuts flickr group is eligible to participate, but I think we’ll have to exclude Fabio. I’m sure he’ll understand. :)

    Good luck to everybody!

  30. DonnieYodha says:

Hell yeah! I will submit one.. it’ll be embarrassing, but I just can’t reseist!

  31. imedia51 says:

    I’ve got two questions:

1- Any limits to how many entries?

2- How about if the particular image is already a part of the pool? Should we just add a link in a comment to this blog entry?

  32. Saswata says:

I m so gonna win it!

  33. Shane says:

Looking forward to seeing the entries.

  34. arnaud says:

Fabio excludes of the contest :D

Great idea, let’s go work !

  35. Fabio Sasso says:

Hey guys, this contest will be really cool… I will be just watching.

    good luck to everybody

  36. Jin Y says:

May I make one humble suggestion: please set a Dimension in the rules. I foresee many great works in the pool, it’d be easier to judge if everyone used the same dimension(maybe 1 dimension for landscape and 1 for horizontal). also it’d be neat if the designs are desptop wallpaper friendly dimension wise too.

  37. Diego Mattei says:

I stayed with the doubt … which are the work of Fabio? As to know why they do not want to participate

  38. Diego Mattei says:

Sorry, I feel a stupid to have asked that … who is already, just not as recognized by Fabio.

  39. Sean Hodge says:

Fabio writes for us almost every week, and therefore is practically a member of staff at PSDTUTS. He’s one of the leaders of this community. It’s great to see the inspirational work that Fabio regular submits to the PSDTUTS pool. It’s great to see him participate and be active, but it wouldn’t make sense for him to be eligible to win.

I’ve sent a message asking Fabio if he’d like to help judge the contest though. I think that would be great. Also, I should have thought about whether writers are eligible in the rules before this got started.

It’s actually unlikely that we would choose a winner from anyone that writes for us regularly. Doing so would look like we are picking favorites. Though some writers only write for us occasionally. How does everybody feel about this issue?

  40. Harry says:

Awesome im gonna enter soon!!! :D

  41. Sean C. says:

I’ve learned so much here it’s unreal! I hope to be a competitor for this contest and future contests; as long as Fabio isn’t my competition! :) HEHEEH

  42. Sean Hodge says:

@imedia51 – No Entry Limit. We can’t enforce this, but the idea is that your creating new entries for this contest and not resubmitting old work. If your considering doing that then think about at least improving a past design.

@Jin Y – Having Dimension limits is a good idea. We’ll likely do that on a future contest. Desktop wallpapers would make a good future contest. For this contest though there aren’t any dimension limits. Though keep in mind that to be displayed on the PSDTUTS site an image would need to scale down to 600px or less.

Announcement, Fabio has signed on to help us with judging entries! :) Good to see we have some entries already. Thx.

  43. I have just finished my work and I have to admit it is looking great.

Also I am glad to hear that Fabio will take part in choosing the winner. At first I wondered why will he not participate but now everything is clear. ;)

I this I will post my work soon. Just need to make some minor adjustments and I will join the contest participants. ;)

    Good Luck to everyone.

P.S. Happy Eastern for those who celebrate it now. “Like me”

  44. Qbrushes says:

shouldn’t there be a special section within the PSDTUTS pool so some of us know Wether its worth trying or not :D

i mean there is a lot of very professional talent if you know what i mean :)

  45. I don’t think you need to know the competition. At least you can look into the Flickr group and see the competition.

You need to know that you will get some experience and also get to keep the art you make and use it in your portfolio. ;)

  46. Sam Barracca says:

I love Photoshop contests! I actually have a piece that I think I’ll enter soon, after some tweaking. =]
