Upgrade: Threaded Comments on Tuts+ Sites

A spot of quick site news, we’ve just added threading to the comments on all Tuts+ sites. So you can now reply to comments, and reply to replies, making for a more streamlined and coherent discussion. In particular it means seeing questions get answered will make much more sense!

The upgrade is thanks to the (relatively) new WordPress 2.7 to which we just moved. We’ve got a few other small site upgrades scheduled including linking Plus files directly on the tutorial page for logged in members (currently you have to click off to the Plus site) and finally getting our multi-lingual system working!

In the meantime, enjoy the new threaded comments!

Go threaded comments! Reply me and you can see how they look 8)

We only added 2 levels of replies as beyond that gets a bit confusing I think.

  2. Benjamin Reid says:

Way overdue for a commonly seen feature ( and easily implemented :P ), still good none the less.

  3. Chaos says:

    hmm, i think it’s useless.

  4. lawrence77 says:

    cool idea collis! :)

  5. Wuiqed says:

Great stuff! Now we just need an author’s comments to be highlighted in some way (like a different background) and the comment design would be awesomesauce!

  6. grazz says:

Sounds cool, but it looks like it needs a little css-ing.

  7. The images are sort out of wack unless they are supossed to be.

  8. Alvaro says:

It’s a great feature, maybe the avatars should be smaller on the reply threads, to avoid confusions, just an idea;)

  9. robby says:

    I love bacon!

    Oh and good job Collis!

  10. Lol this is a nice upgrade:)

  11. Misael Arroyo says:

Really nice, it’s like a little forum =P

    • Bendsen says:

Like Misael said “it’s like a little forum”

Have you guys from Tuts+ ever thought of a real forum? it could be real nice to be able to start discussion and post topics.

  12. B says:

I notice some major browser compatibility issues.

Google Chrome – does not thread at all, reply avatars are mis aligned from comment.
    FF3 good
    IE7 good
IE6 – replies and replies of replies do not display avatar, name, date, and reply link, but they are positioned in the correct placement but start displaying in the footer and go way beyond the end of the page.

    yikess

  13. Sirwan says:

just noticed that, the pedobear ascii art is on psdtuts’s blocked list…

  14. Saro says:

    • Patrick says:

hmmh, think it’s better when replies are collapsed, so that the user can expand reply-comments manually, when he’s interested to read them.

But generally the feature is nice!

      • Patrick says:

haha, and i found a bug!

If you click on “reply” you write a comment as a reply. Okay, but if you click on reply and decide then that you dont want to reply on a comment and write an own comment by clicking on “Add Yours” you still write a reply to an existing comment!

  17. Ok the comments are way better than when I last posted ^_^ GREAT JOB!

  18. Nigga says:

i9m using FF3 1280 x 1024 and this is so strange to me , i think its not working, if it is, it got uglie !!!

  19. AliasP says:

Yeah, same with Shiretoko (FireFox 3.1b3pre) — Comments are misaligned, and I have no idea which ones are original and which are nested…

    • AliasP says:

Update: Shiretoko displays it fine. I must have just pulled it up earlier at the wrong time. But after viewing in FF3 and then re-opening Shiretoko, it worked.

      Very nice :P

  20. This is a way better commenting system.

  21. Lumzor says:

    My nizzle, nice system!

  22. Joop says:

You should make the (REPLY) an icon.

  23. David says:

    Really really cool Collis!

  24. FUNKist says:

    I ahve just replied

  25. loswl says:

WOW!!..Great commenting system, very nice change…Collis, you are a genius!!! :o)

  26. Synook says:

It’s nice… but the comment rate could becomer much higher now, with comments such as “yea!”, “no way”, and “ok” much more common :P

  27. psdwatcher says:

it looks realy bugged out. looks really bad on IE7. deffinitely need to smooth this over ASAP, sorry.

  28. bleh says:

looks terrible in firefox for some reason….

  32. abc says:

    this is very cool

  33. Jeff says:

    Awesome stuff!

  34. Richard says:

Huh! I think you should make a bigger difference between the original comment and its reply…This is a little bit confusing. I recommend more css styles.

  35. jenjen says:

    cool!

  36. Christopher says:

I love how the avatar appears outside of the comment box. And how the replies avatar is in the smaller right corner. How can I recreate this on my threaded comments? Changing the comment structuring in WP 2.8 totally confuses me.
