A quick announcement today: we’re switching our advertising over to a new system via the recently-launched BuySellAds.com. Previously, I’d been running a little ad network between four of our sites—FlashDen, FreelanceSwitch, FaveUp and Psdtuts+. But now thanks to this new service, it’s all fully automated.
BuySellAds is still in beta but is a very promising service. I know Todd who’s running the site, and he’s a great guy. So if you’ve ever wanted to purchase an advert here, you can now do so via our Ad Sales page on BuySell. The price of an advert … $1500 p/month :-)
I figure since the site is mostly about the Plus membership now, I’d only have a few, but really expensive ad spots. If they sell, then that’s great. And if not, then no real harm done. In any case, we have lots of traffic here, so even at that rate it’s only a $0.50 CPM rate which is pretty darn low!
Also, of course, you can buy ads on FreelanceSwitch for $750, and on FaveUp for $300.
In other news, I’ll be announcing the new editor of the site in a few days. He has in fact been editing Psdtuts+ for almost two weeks now, but it’s all been very hush, hush while he gets used to all the machinery of the site.
Thats interesting. Did you also own miiingle?
First, btw.
Actually, sorry, my question was suppose to state: What about Miiingle?
Great to hear that the website is successful, Collis.
I wish you luck with your venture! :D
Thanks Aloke :-)
All the best Collis. Your site is one of the best!
Thanks for keeping the majority of the site free :). Your site is ‘the’ best !
its great to hear from you Collis, i wished it was a tutorial tho :)
I don’t have the money to buy these thing 750$ is a bit high for my buget ^^
hehe it’s high for mine too :-)
very nice to see the site growing bigger, soon we’ll have PSDTUT fever :-)
From the moment that i found this website through one of the ads on bittbox, i knew that i had made a great discovery and since then i have learnt a lot from this website. Without doubt PSDTUTS is one of the best photoshop tutorial sites on this planet. It’s good to know that its doing very well.
This site’s great – you lot deserve every penny of that grand and a half for the advertisers!
I am so happy to hear that the websites you are making Collis are getting better and better.
Good luck!
yeah i agree with ben..
This site is great, and deserves every success. Thanks for all the articles, and all the best for the future.
Yay money!
Good news…
But 1500$ is a lot of money ;-)
Daniel
I am a daily visitor to your site! and i must say it rocks… However 750$ is a bit huge amount of money here in my country!!! I will surely contribute to PSDTUTS one day!!! Keep up the good work guys!!! Have learnt a lot here… No doubt about it!!!….. amazing sites like this needs to be supported…
keep up the gr8 work dude!
Firstly, well done on all of the work put into these sites. They are great. Keep up the good work.
However, some constructive feedback for you in order to help you push the ads in the right direction.
The price is off-putting. I very much doubt many, if any ads will be sold. The main reason being, web ads are not that popular in blogsites at these prices without some solid marketing figures and in-depth research to back it up. People with a large marketing budget will need vast amounts of information regarding the demographics of readers and traffic patterns to and from the site.
“PSDTUTS has close to 20,000 RSS subscribers and as of March 2008 receives 1 million monthly visitors and over 3 million monthly pageviews” isn’t enough information to sell any kind of ad at the price you are asking. You need to basically provide advertising reps (as this is who will be buying those ads, not your common reader who subscribes to these types of blogs) with a good reason why they should invest their hard earned cash into this blog. At the price you’re charging, you can get an impressive huge advert in the pages of a major magazine for the same time period allocated. Advertising reps don’t just say “ah, this magazine is read by a lot of people lets advertise there”, they request an in-depth marketing report, which is often downloadable from major magazines websites. In these marketing reports in a nutshell is almost identical to the type of content that the Freelancer Survey brought in, but instead of it being based around Freelancers, it needs to be based around the websites you run.
Sometimes my clients ask me advice on where to market their product or service and where to place adverts. Clients go for bulk information, which wins ad sales. Will people with a budget capable of meeting your asking price be interested with very little information as to where their money is going? Not likely.
I recommend you slice the price greatly, or if you want to hit those ads out at the current asking price, you’ll need to invest a lot of time into providing a good enough reason for people to take out an ad.
Good luck and congrats again on such great sites.
Way cool! And whoever the editor is, they are doing great! lol
interesting stuff – so is this similar to add words ? or are u actually selling adverts ?
Holy crap, does this great site receive 1M visitors per month ????
Oh man.. that is a huge competition….. huh !
Hey Caldari, thanks for the comments, I think you’re right about providing more information! I’m going to update the ad sales pages this week for this and the other sites. It’s funny, but bizarrely we’ve never really done that before. I know Gawker has a full blow site on this sort of thing.
As for prices, obviously I could be wrong, but I’m fairly sure we’ll sell. The reason being that I actually also work as an ad buyer for our site FlashDen and have been buying advertising on sites like PSDTUTS for a couple of years now. During that time I’ve monitored things like rates and who’s buying ads in the creative web market. So hopefully I’ve managed to get it right, but we’ll see in any case. So far we’ve sold one already though happily, let’s hope they stick with us :-)
Thanks again for the indepth feedback, very useful idea!
Thanks for this information Collis. Bookmarked the site. :)
I actually think that $1,500 is a really good price for an ad on this site. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good amount of money; however, one ad has already sold in the first few days and if you break it down to CPM it’s a $0.50 CPM which is darn good for a quality site like this with loyal visitors.
this is great news, what happened. I hope this doesn’t post twice
Nice news.. but.. dont you think that $1500 per month is too much expensive??
