Some of the more observant of you may have noticed that starting yesterday some little “Envato Network” widgets began appearing in the top right of both this site and our other blogs and marketplaces. What is Envato? Well it’s our new name!
A lot has happened since this company formed two years ago and as a team we’ve grown a lot and certainly learned a lot. When we came to trademark our company name recently, it turned out that the name Eden was pretty difficult to win a trademark for. About a dozen companies blocked our application in Australia alone! Sheesh Kebab!
While I’m a bit sad to see Eden go, I’m happy to announce that as of today we are rebranding the business under a new name: Envato.
Being an invented word, Envato is a lot easier to trademark and we hope to put our stamp firmly on the new name in the years to come! As far as I know it doesn’t mean anything in any non-English languages (though I’ve heard it’s akin to the Mexican Spanish slang for dude), but I’d love to hear if it does have any other translations that we’ve missed, especially if they are funny!
A Creative Eco-System
With a change like this, we thought it would be a good time to introduce a new feature to our sites in the form of a little site-switching widget that is now appearing on all our major sites in the top right. The site switcher not only allows users to flick between sites, but also ensures that our audiences are aware of all the Envato sites.
As you’ll begin to see by flicking through the 10 or so sites already listed, our mission here at Envato is to build a creative eco-system of sites and services to benefit people like you and me. This year we’ve already launched four sites, with another half-dozen penciled in to go up before 2009. Some of those are more in our marketplace and TUTS lines, but we also have a couple of brand new ideas to launch too.
It’s a pretty exciting time for our little company which started out in my living room not so long ago. These days we’re still mostly working in living rooms, just more of them!
A Big Thank You!
And since it’s not often that I get to post on every single one of our sites together, I thought on behalf of the whole team, I’d say thank you to all of you readers, users, members, buyers and authors who have supported us and helped us grow!
So Thank You All, and Viva Envato!

Looks great Collis! I’m not suprised you couldn’t copyright it: there’s stuff like the Eden Project over here in the UK too.
I really like the sidebar :)
Like the new name and ‘collective eco-system’. The TUT sites are all fantastic and I can’t wait to see what new happens soon. :)
The new network menu in the top right is superb! Excellent and really useful change!
Noice :)
wow what a nice name… I thought its a translation of eden. lol.. but anyway the new name really nice.
I’ve noticed that in safari on a mac (MAC OS X/10.5) the envanto drop down menu ruins the layout and sometimes puts the categories over articles, also the comment boxes overflow onto the ‘USER+’ box.
A Big Thank You!
Hey MWUK, that sounds odd, I’ve tested on Safari 3 on OSX. You might need to refresh to get the latest stylesheet in maybe? Try a force refresh I guess. I’ll do some more testing!
I noticed it yesterday afternoon… do I get extra credit?
One thing I have to say is that I love that the basic theme is carried across all of the sites. There is no mistaking that each of those sites have some relation to one another and I can’t wait for ThemeForrest!
Beta request submitted.. no response =(
Congratulations Collis!
Sweet. :)
Sounds nice. And clean logo. Well done
Really nice. The new network menu in the top right is a slick add, however, I think you should put that widget on the main site too (http://envato.com)
This way we can bookmark envato.com only, and quickly access the ‘TUTS’ sites from the main site, thus eliminating the need to have all 4 ‘TUTS’ sites bookmarked on my browser. You’ll get more eyes on the Envato brand ;)
Either way, you have great content, I check each one daily. Good stuff!
my 2 cents.
Awesome – keep the good stuff coming.
the new name sounds great…
Great news! Love the name, and the envato site looks beautiful, too. You guys do the cleanest, best work in my opinion. Congrats!
Congrats guys. I know it was a lot of hard work and all the effort is appreciated. Collis, you inspire a lot of people, way to show how well hard work and dedication can pay off. I have enjoyed watching Eden blossom(no pun intended) and will continue to follow Envato. I wish all of you the best and hope that everything else you have planned is just as successful.
I saw tham and was wondering what it was :D very cool!
Honestly, I’m the first to think “Roboto?”
Yeaaa, Keep rocking the net!
best wishes for your company ;)
@ MWUK
Your big problem is that you are using Safari. As far as following web browser standards, you might as well be using IE6. Use FF.
Great feature in the top right! And I really like the name Envato. It feels good to say ;)
Eden > Envato.. cool name but it will take some getting use to. :)
Collis is it your plan to take over the world? Another 5 years it looks like that may happen. All jokes aside. You guys are doing an awesome thing for the internet. And there’s all the room in the world to grow. Blessings
yeah sounds good and i like it…btw…there is no meaning in german for envato…what a piity….
Man I love this site……..errr sites. Keep up the great work. I look forward everyday to see whats new on these pages =)
Check your CSS drop down in FF3… it appears in the wrong place.
hmmm. I think envato means stinky camel breath in arabic. Just kidding, great name and best of luck with the rebrand.
Congrats for all the great sites, and i’m hardly waiting the new resources/articles on these sites.
I like this new name..Thank you Collis.
Hmmm. Envato sounds kinda… dirty. Don’t know.
Very nice idea.
One new step in this great company. Keep it on!
The Envato network widget is fantastic, blends real nice and works great! I’m glad you guys put something like this up finally, it makes thing so much easier!
well… when i saw the name the first came to my mind …ENVATO!! cool!! they are mexicans, didn’t know…!!
I have to tell you that your “invented word” are really two spanish words in one!!
EN = in
VATO = mexican word for dude, guy, pal….
so your invented word can even be translated like…. INDUDE, INGUY, INPAL….. hahaha so your theory about doesn’t meaning anything in other laungages does not apply in spanish, well, mexican spanish at least…. you were right about the mexican meaning… kinda funny, huh?… to the latino world your brand name will send a message like…. chale vato!! somos mexicanos!! LOL….
i like the new name
The widget is cool, works in my firefox (latest with updates) and safari(Latest with updates)
Less parent-company press releases, more photoshop tutorials. Why are these company growth announcements always huge articles here?
It means dude, haha love it.
Not as catchy but im sure it will “catch” on. Keep up the awesome sites!
@Phillip:
seems to be okay…im using firefox as well…
@deejmer
A webpage shouldn’t be aimed at a specific browser, i understand that firefox is more compatible with more websites, and generally more fluid and useable, as i use it on my XP and Ubuntu desktop, but for a website dedicated to aesthetics and design it would seem a little disappointing to have a brilliant template ruined by one minor bug, even if it was caused by browser compatibility.
Anyway back to the point, brilliant integration collis it fits better than i expected, and i was expecting it to look and behave brilliantly!!!
Sorry about overlapping but i forgot to mention how memorable the envanto name is and how much i like the ‘dude’ translation, also sound kind of like inventing…
Sorry, AGAIN
not invention as a particular translation but just as a latin sounding generic sound… if you get what i mean, which is very rare…
Ya know..I was just gna tell you today about the sidebar; or similar feature like tabs to quickly switch through all your sites. G’d work man!
Sounds pretty cool :)
Actually if we divide the name, we get two Spanish words:
En + Vato
( In + Dude (Mexican Spanish slang) )
Congrats guys… glad to see everyone are growing. ;)
Envato we trust! Orale Vatos!
envato doesn’t mean anything in spanish vato means a gangster though
Envató is like “I liked very much” in some caribbean countries
I.e. “Me envató el tutorial” = I loved the tutorial
Sounds gr8. Congratz guyz!
