Brainstorming Ideas for New Contests
We’re seeing a lot of participation in this month’s AudioJungle Wallpaper Design contest, and the first Psdtuts+ contest went great as well. We want to keep this momentum going. If you have any suggestions on contests you’d like to see run here, let us know. The monthly contests have been a success so far, let’s brainstorm a bit as a community to keep this going.
Leave a comment indicating what you think would make a great Psdtuts+ contest. I’m sure we’ve all got some great ideas we could add. As with any brainstorming session, just throw ideas out! We want to here what you think will make a great contest!
Here are a few ideas I have to get the ball rolling on this. We could have a poster contest, maybe focus on movie posters, or something retro. We could have a contest that is based on designing websites, or an icon design contest, maybe focused on a theme. These are kind of general ideas, but you get the idea. This Month’s AudioJungle Contest is Going Strong

It’s a great thing that we’ll have contests. But at the moment, I have no idea of what contests.
A contest where participants compete to redesign a chosen website the best.
Something to do with this disaster of presidential election we are having, that or the horrid gas prices!
1) Choose a famous quote from a person in history, participants have to design a piece based on what that quote means to them.
2) One for Nettuts, make available a simple HTML file with no styling or layout elements. Participants must not alter this file, and build a stylesheet to make the html file look as good as possible. Similar to the idea of CSSZengarden.com.
I will post more ideas later.
Redesign the header of all ***tuts sites!
1. Create an entirely new effect using only Photshop and no stock photography.
2. Select a limited number of photos, say two or three and create a design using only those.
3. A Photshop “tool” contest. Select one of the Photoshop tools, i. e. the pen tool or the history brush tool, and make a design based on that. Make things trickier by limiting the number of tools allowed…
I say a album cover for your favourite videogame! lol but yeh
Well i know its weird but one topic i really fascinated about is ascension.
Being able to go above the normal limit’s. and if you could what strengths would you give yourself.
The explosion tutorial gave us a good example of what that could be like.
I think it will also be a good contest because it involves people.
If you could become stronger what would you give yourself
here are a few examples.
Flight, Telepathy, Nature Manipulation
A t-shirt Design competition or a contest to see who could think of the best contest.
Perhaps design an eden wallpaper?PSD/Net/Vectortuts wallpaper?
I second Josh’s idea about the quote.
As for my idea, contestants submit very short tutorials. Nothing complicated, just tips and tricks that would be useful for beginners. Beginners like me.
I like the website redesign best – see what people come up with :)

A contest like this:
Inspiration for free you can make what you want but there need some special effects in.
So you can make a house and a sea. a rare combination but thats just the beauty of all.
Just smash al your prints in eachother and make a nice outcome :)
How about a banner for PSDTuts to put in other web pages?
That way you are not only designing but creating something useful…
Just like the present contest… which is useful because of the wallpaper for audiojungle..
Yes, a little format or panoramic format ? , hum i’m inspired today…
BEST CONTEST IDEA; colorize an artists lineart or a BnW photo.
In my experience this format is always where the best discussion is opened up, where the most creative insight is needed and where attention to detail is a must.
I thought maybe following on from Nik’s tutorial, you could give us a face which we have to edit in any way we want, think it would bring out some cool ideas.
I also like Josh’s NETTUTS contest idea, think that would be good cos it would combine VECTORTUTS and PSDTUTS so we were making the graphics for the page aswell, I guess not everyone can code and use Photoshop though.
We could have a “Guess the color scheme of the next *TUTS website” contest ;)
Well, this is PSDTuts, why not make a contest about the best tutorial ?
If you ave to fight for something, fight with tutorials for the winning money.
PSDTuts will have a ton of new tuts + you will have the chance to win some money :)

Some great ideas here, keep them coming! The contest idea brainstorming sessions is going great. I’m avoiding commenting on any specific ideas at this point. I think this is the time were we really just get as many good ideas out as we can. Then later we start to analyze them.

I had a couple more ideas. I thought it would be cool to have a collaboration contest. So, you would have to partner up to enter and win. Then you’d pass the design file back and forth between you and another designer and you’d both share the prize.
Also, I’ve seen people mentioning ways that more than one Tuts site could be involved. So, maybe something that combines pixels and vector graphics to bring Vectortuts into it in some way.

I think a superhero theme – or one where you turn a picture of yourself into a superhero would be great. That way, we can all go crazy with our designing and there would be such a display of talent on the site!
I would love to see some tutorials about they have done these Flickr pictures!
Maybe a contest for designing commercial posters for products such as laptops, cars, phones…
-A contest were a few stock images are given to work with.
-An official TUTS-logo contest.
-An image of a car that has to be skinned/tuned.
I really like the idea of redesigning a website. Good job. Maybe a big site, something like google or yahoo. Og wikipedia.

What about an DOTW (Design of the Week). A weekly contest. Make the best Design by using Tuts (from all ***tuts.com sites, but mainly psdtuts) from the Week before (same week would be idiotic). Open the Contest with a link of all Tuts and let us be creatife)

PSD Speed Contest?
I think it would be cool to do a speed contest. Where everyone gets together at a certain time with a time limit and then the moderator puts up a theme or concept (maybe some pictures/textures) and everyone tries their best to complete something in say an hour or two hours. Maybe have to have two separate contests/themes for time zone issues.
I have seen this done in the 3d world, its called speed modeling, over at Deviant Art.
The only problem, and not to be to down on myself, is that I don’t think I would be able to compete against you guys in my own contest idea :)
I actually liked Jayden’s idea – it’s a bit hard to grasp for the most part, but it certainly challenges the mind to come up with something to visually convey the idea.
actually how about psdtuts messes up an image and then you have to make it normal
I am with Bogdinamita, movie poster or cd cover with limited number of photos… and maybe limited number of submitions too… not 14 but maybe 2 from every designer…

try and draw a famous photo using only photoshop and a tablet/mouse…
as in digital art drawings because there has only been one drawing tut on this site
how about making something like “Planet Green” like that of Discovery Channel’s program theme…?
about ecology and recycling or something? hehe’

No stock used, everything must be digital.
Give a wiked theme like : hybrid lawnmower (this is totaly crazy)
and participants must come with a cool design that emphys that idea and give “vitual visitors” the objective to “enter the site” to find out more.
How bout a contest that incorporates skills learned from all of the TUTS site?

I think it would be fun to host a contest for the most creative way to promote PSDTUTS. This would include online/offline options – really anything people can dream up. So hopefully this would encourage people to experiment with fun/unique ways to promote the website. Bumper stickers, posters, maybe a video on Youtube of shouting about it in a mall, wearing a psdtuts tshirt for a whole week and blogging about it. I’m sure people could come up with some hilarious ways that would draw a lot of attention to the website.
1. Why not redesign something that is proven to be a bad design? Turn it into something WOW!
2. I second tom ross, most creative way to promote psdtuts. It would be fun to see people wearing psdtuts shirt or even psdtuts shoe! We can turn the community into a culture!

Maybe pick a tool on the toolbar and see who can make a tutorial that utilizes it or helps you learn to use it best.
Thanks Joharin – that’s a good way of putting it. I was thinking of really pushing the limits of the psdtuts community and thought that might be a fun way to do it :)
