Presentation: Working With Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3

Presentation: Working With Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3

If you are a photographer or some one who works with photos quite a bit, chances are you’ve heard of Lightroom. Lightroom is an app that allows you to edit and organize your photos. While it can perform many of the same tasks as Photoshop, it is an independent app designed specifically with photographers in mind.

Each month, we try to bring you a design-related presentation or speech from around the web. Today, our friend and Adobe Design Master, Martin Perhiniak led a seminar organized by Academy Class, the leading training company in the UK as part of their Digital Photography Club. Please take a moment to review Martin’s excellent presentation if you’re interested in learning more about Lightroom 3. To learn more from Martin, check out the Photoshop Basix Series he did for Psdtuts or his personal blog Yes I’m a Designer.

thanks for sharing would check this out :) but i have a question.. if we have photoshop and then why do we need light room in the first place,, place camera raw can also perform pretty much loads of color enhancements !!

Lightroom (essentially an electronic Darkroom) is specifically focused on post-production photo development where as Photoshop, while still having the same powers, is more focused on editing and manipulating photos. In Lightroom you’ll find options similar to what you’d find in a Darkroom and these let you specifically control the overall development of a photo, even down emulating different development treatments, film types, etc. You can even emulate barrel distortions and vignettes from real-life production lenses.

In addition to this it provides an extensive cataloguing and backup system—the second half of Lightroom—which allows you to sort, rate, pick, archive, and batch rename entire photo collections; just to name some of the features.

Consider a wedding photographer and how much easier cataloguing combined with all the powerful development-specific features would make life than sorting files manually and only using Photoshop’s more basic developer features.

Thanks a lot Jared for the detailed answer!

I usually say that for me the biggest difference is that with Lightroom you can have thousands of photos in a catalog opened at the same time and Lightroom will still be very fast. Imagine opening 10 000 high resolution RAW file into Photoshop, it would take days. Lightroom opens up a catalog like this in 5 seconds.

Lightroom is faster and very streamlined if you want to edit lots of photographs quickly and efficiently.

I love Lightroom. I think I was late to the party because I just started using it early last year. I haven’t stopped yet. The batch editing is what I love to most. It has cut my post processing time by leaps and bounds.

my my my that girl looks amazing. she doesn’t need any editing. only advantage I actual see that would benefit me from this program is the batch editing. Took me so long to learn photoshop i feel like i have to use it.
