Presentation: Creating Movie Posters in Photoshop

Each month, we try to bring you a design-related presentation or speech from around the web. Today, our friend and Adobe Design Master, Martin Perhiniak led a seminar organized by Academy Class, the leading training company in the UK as part of their Digital Photography Club. In the seminar, Martin demonstrates how to create a movie poster in Photoshop. This video is about an hour and fifteen minutes long.     Nice tut!

    Having made quite a few filmposters myself, there is one neat trick you can do to subtly blend the differing elements on the poster. It helps getting rid of the often harsh transitions between objects coming from different sources, like photographs taken under differing conditions.

    On top of everything (not the text elements, but these should be added in Illustrator anyway) you create a layer, set it to Overlay (you can try other blend modes if you want but this usually works best) and fill it with 50% black (RGB 125,125,125). Probably nothing happens – which is what we want. We don’t want to affect things like saturation and colours. Now, you go to Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur/Monochromatic and add a tiny bit of noise (zooming in on the picture helps), that will help to soften the transitions between said elements. Just add enough noise to smoothen things out, unless you’re after a really gritty effect. Next time you’re in a cinema, check out how this trick is used in almost all movieposters.
