The Creative Gap: Becoming Better Than Most

The Creative Gap: Becoming Better Than Most

We know that our International audience can’t attend every cool speech or conference. That is why from time-to-time we like to bring you some of the lectures that we have found on the Internet. Today’s lecture is from Nick Campbell of Greyscale Gorilla about the creative gap and how you can become better than most.

Does anyone else see the irony of posting a video of a lecture about how design students have it “so hard” to stand out from the rest of us on a site dedicated to tutorials and lessons for the rest of us?

    • http://terencedevine.com Terence

Did you watch it? The main point of the video isn’t that you should go onto tutorial sites and learn their techniques, but instead diligently do projects to progress yourself from the crappy work we all start at, to being one of the best in our field. Amazing sites like this are just good places to learn the skills, but from there you have to push yourself to be awesome, because as he says ‘Everything is Awesome’

A truly inspirational and motivational speech!

  • Donny

I’ve found this really intereseting, thanks :D

  • Sloan Sparger

This was amazing! I really learned alot!

Great lecture and thank you for sharing. Would love to attend one of lecture, but sadly I’m part of the international audience and have to wait for it :)

    Keep up the good work

Oh my.. Amazing! Only watched half of the video yet, but awesome. Another thing this made me more aware of about life generally, is that, if you’re going to get good at something, you have to experience and learn the new stuff.. because, if it’s on the Internet – for instance – , then everybody knows it.

GREAT lecture! I especially liked his “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” advice. Never thought of it that way, but so true. Thanks for the post!

Is very important the conference on line, because everybody learn other kind to design with diferent expert of the matter

    thanks for share it

i hope to see more video conference for this web site

Amazing, haven’t watched all the video but will over the next couple of days, this is really kick arse stuff for people who are willing to listen.

Nick is displaying the qualities of self made millionaires, probably one of the most studied groups of people around. I don’t want to be a millionaire but I’m curious to know what makes them successful.

To be some thing special, you need to be something you’re not. Most people give up when they fail but if you push on then success will come.

I was watching a video on Lynda.com sometime back and a successful designer said most people do the same thing, there reels (not sure if reels is correct term but that’s what he said) are mostly the same, he said be different.

    • iggy21

very true… although, time and time again, I see people trying to be ‘different’ and they ignore quality, or a good idea, or even common design principles …’different’ doesn’t automatically mean ‘good’.. you have to make something different that is also good.

“if you look at what you made … a month ago, 6 months ago, and you like it? be very careful”

    great quote

    • GVD

Really cool i think the same way.

      • neil

I think every artist thinks that way. They’re happy, briefly, when the project is finished. The next day they notice all the improvements they could make.

Brilliant Video. Lots to learn from it.

Thanks Grant, your contribution to design industry is quite good.

This is a great presentation on DESIGN and standing out among the rest. It was very encouraging for me! It validates the hard work and extra time put into learning and applying new concepts and technique into my projects. Doing what we do and WHY we do it. Most people don’t understand that you know? Why we go the extra mile. Why we explore where others don’t want to or tell us NOT to (maybe because it makes them look bad?) Why the dedication. Why the passion. Thank you very much for sharing this.

  • Daniel

    Really great, thanks for sharing.

    A inspirational speech!
    nice to hear it..

  • GVD

    REALLY INTERESTING!

  • http://www.logic52.com Shane

Great presentation. Really inspirational stuff. Do something everyday!

  • Otter

Probably interesting, but I didn’t watched it till the end and won’t going to watch it, because the guy CAN’T SPEAK.
Most of his sentences are like: “And….Ummmmmmmmmm…. the… ummmmmmmmm… artwork…ummmmmmmm” till no ends. Horrible to listen to really. -_-

    • http://terencedevine.com Terence

He speaks fine, I actually think hes pretty fun to listen to.

‘and won’t going to watch it’

You could use some grammar lessons tho (sorry if you’re not a native English speaker but maybe you shouldn’t judge so harshly)

    • jack

Completely agree. I had to turn it off after about a minute. Just because someone wants to sound playful, doesn’t mean he should torment us as well. I think it would be wise for anyone that speaks at conferences or events to invest a little time in preparation. There are public speaking groups out there worth investigating. Now, how was my grammar?

    • http://cargocollective.com/blackyeti Black Yeti

I dont agree. It was fine. Lets say it was fantastic. He was not reading anything from the paper, it was just more action and he did very well. I like it. Im not native english speaker but i understand everything very well and i enjoyed whole video to the end. Extremely inspiring!

And u really need to understand the audience. This was how to be a great designer, how to push yourself, how to do things etc. And it was in the room full of students. Do you guys really think that everyone will enjoy the speech if he will just stand up before the table and for the whole time he would be reading the paper? I dont think so ;) It would be boring. And this is not about doing boring things…its about jumping out of the box and make something! Now!

This lecture had a ton of great information. A lot of it was pretty self explanatory but sometimes you need a refresher to put you back on track.

Truly inspiring. Great lecture. Thanks for sharing.

    wonderful teaching!

  • http://www.austindesignguy.com Casey

I strongly agree with his perspective.

Any suggestions on great books that teach color theory, typography, etc?

Great video, thanks so much for posting!

  • bella

My English is not good, but I want to learn it very much.

  • http://www.aleksmarkelj.com Aleks Markelj

    Thank you for this video.

I personaly needed hearing this stuff from someone who “made it” in the design world.

It is really a boost for my work in the future. So, thank you again. :)

  • http://davidpuerto.com David

I can’t take anyone seriously on this format who wants to close the gap to being better than most yet looks like everyone. I swear, I see about two hundred of these where’s waldo looking creeps a day.

  • http://www.santisweb.com SantisWeb

Great speech! very informative and inspirational.

  • Rosalit Miranda Torres

Thank you. Now I know, I´m not the onlyone feeling: “It´s so hard to get that”

  • http://web-kreation.com Jeremie

Am I the only one to think it was boring?

  • praneeth
