Sad waste of talent unfortunately. Anyone can put junk deviant garbage up to appeal to lower destructive forms of thought. True creativity requires leading the observer to a higher plane of energizing and uplifting forms that evolve man’s thought process to a higher plane for the good of all mankind.

Careful there. You have quite a nerve saying that about the works of Linda Bergkvist. You are ill-informed since she is indeed a very accomplished digital painter who learned all the fundamentals of painting. The same rings true concerning Martha Dalig.
I would have agreed if you had named the works of artist No. 15, because those are smudge-photo manipulations with eye-candy high-contrast coloration and lighting effects devoid of actual skill. WAY overrated also.

    Craig Sellars – excellent choice!

Also, it’s BergKvist and (Bobby) ChIU, not ‘Chui’.

I understand why some people say fantasy art is kitsch, it is indeed. But there’s a whole industry that needs this specific kind of art, games, movies (mattepainting), illustrations etc. You can’t use mysterious artsy images on a computer game package. Probably many of these artists do in parallel the ‘real art’ that some wish to see, but this doesn’t mean they should stop searching for an income in the name of some pure art ideal. On the other hand the so-called real art is also full of kitsch, of wannabe deep concepts and lots of images that don’t have any meaning. It’s just another style of kitsch. I prefer a well-done fantasy or sci-fi image than the mediocre work of a pretended haunted artist. Most of them don’t actually have talent and find a refugee in the eternal ‘i am misunderstood’. And yes, i can make difference between art and kitsch.

I’m actually NOT blown away by these. In fact most of these are very uninspiring. A lot of these paintings are either very dark or exploiting women in ways they shouldn’t be.

Can we please get someone with better taste picking the art and artists used on this site? This article isn’t a showcase of amazing techniques, its bad taste from artists who don’t have much self control.

Women shouldn’t be portrayed as objects of our sexual desires, let’s get some maturity back on this article or any future articles! thank you!

A lot of the “futuristic” man/machine ones are just repetitive. It was nice to see different takes on things instead of “Big gun, and a monster, and and and, yeah, some boobs.. heheh, yeah, that’s great”.

Art isn’t just about technique, but about originality too. Yes, all of the artists are technically amazing, but what about what they are actually drawing? We’re all a bit over the “delicate porcelain skinned vampire futuristic lady with a bazooka for an arm” thing, which is what made the other artists stand out a LOT more.

To Mr. Althoff: Out of approximately 58 images, only six were even remotely sexual. There were far more depicting standard sci-fi/fantasy fare involving conflict of some kind.

For most men, women ARE the object of their sexual desire and men are similarly objectified by those women. Every time somebody paints, sculpts, photographs, writes music about or depicts in any way, a person as a symbol for something, the subject is objectified. Okay, let’s just cut to, “Art objectifies that which is depicted” or “To be worshipped is to be objectified.” If you are offended by some depictions, fine—say so; just don’t attach any pseudo-moralistic platitudes to it.

I don’t agree with categorizing these as “deviant.” The science-fiction theme has been a regular genre for decades, and these are absolutely square-on, well-executed members of that genre. The whole point of this genre is sense-of-wonder, suspend-disbelief, and trends toward adventurism. (Some of these appear to be close to Whelan quality execution – difficult to tell in screen res.) Those who complain that these aren’t uplifting enough ought to pick up their own stylus and draw their own pictures following the tenets of spiritual or inspirational genres.

These works are absolutely beautiful. The second painting in Vitaly Samarin Alexius’s works captivated me the most. The steaming black smoke in the background that stems from what looks like a gigantic black tower reminded me of Hell. The naked woman standing and staring at the dazzling and calming light provoked a feeling of salvation from eternal suffering in the depths of the brooding black tower that lay in the distance. It was like the woman had escaped Hell somehow, and was ready to step into the light to transcend to Heaven. These are without a doubt the best art I’ve come across in my young life. It has stimulated my imagination profoundly.

Response to: I’m actually NOT blown away by these. In fact most of these are very uninspiring. A lot of these paintings are either very dark or exploiting women in ways they shouldn’t be.

    >>It’s more likely that artists enjoy drawing these sorts of things. Art is a way to express yourself; who knows, maybe they were depressed at the time. I know i draw when I’m feeling particularly down. As for exploiting women, I strongly doubt that is the case. Some artists (me included) probably like to draw the features of women because they are so delicate and refined. In no way is it an attempt to degrade women, at least i don’t feel it is, and i am female.

This kind of work is -common- eye candy to anyone who has ever been on an artist community website–a great majority of these artists have deviantart.com profiles, and they’re names too big to miss. A funny comment, as you’ve missed some of the most prominent artists on the internet.

These men and women have incredible talent, but these themes have gotten -incredibly boring- to those in the digital art field. So why, Danny Outlaw, did you not bother posting their best work? Chicks and mechs are fun and all, but these artist -do- have more impressive work. I’m not about to trash anyone (I taught myself how to paint based on this kind of art) but when it comes to “more impressive” I mean literally “mind-blowing”–brains-coming-out-of-your-eye-sockets-and-ears-to-plaster-the-walls over the mastery of technical skill, sheer conceptual genius, and deep subject matter. Many of these pieces completely lack that kind of effect.

(Damn internet artist snobs with high standards!)

Wow, the technical skill and talent needed to master this type of digital painting is nothing short of breathtaking. To have people put forth the “hater attitude” is so disappointing….especially when viewing up what they have to offer themselves.

It’s a shame, when people can’t differentiate between “paid” work, just for fun art, and actual art that tries to make a statement.

Not all art has to be deep, and humanity changing, if you think so.. you may be missing the point of art and creativity entirely.

Some art actually pays the bills, and these people are professionals.

I’m sorry, there are just some pictures you look at and you can see right through the process and you know it’s not all from scratch. There are at least 3 artists up there whose work looks very… paint-over and smudged to death. And I’m not saying that as some jaded no-talent loser that’s never even opened Photoshop.

As for the selection… I’m not sure why there’s so much sci-fi, fairy type fantasy, end of the world stuff. Some if it is technically amazing but it gets boring.

    Bah.

Um…I hate to ruin the fantasy for all you kids, but uh…the techniques used to make these pieces are actually incredibly simplistic. Often they involved 3D modeling which is rendered out flat and they incorporate real photographic subjects which are then either painted over or run through various filters. Once you understand the techniques involved they’re really not that impressive and quite literally anyone can do it. My personal recommendation for “drawing” human figures is the 3D modeling program Poser, which makes it incredibly easy to create a base model with perfect anatomy and perfect lighting/shading. All you have to do is render flat with shading, then either digitally trace over the top in Photoshop, or simply keep the render unaltered and then “draw” clothing over the top. Or even easier, find a model in a similar pose wearing the clothes you want, then just mask them out, put them onto “your” model, apply a few filters, maybe use the smudge brush on ‘em, blend in the edges and viola! A photograph of real clothing becomes a photo-realistic drawing of real clothing. Cheap tricks for sure, but that’s the way this ~oh so impressive~ form of art is done. Sorry if I killed anyone’s idols. ^__^

Ugh…I cannot STAND Marta Dahlig. I can’t enjoy a single ImagineFX magazine without seeing her big, fat cocky face staring straight at me… The fact that you placed her number one in the list makes the bile in my stomach churn.

Such blatant photo over-painting. Boring, recycled subject matter: all her women look the same, except for different hair styles and colors. I have yet to see her draw a man for a change.

To Jonahthan Woodward, who quoted, “hmmm, just pick up any issue of ImagineFX and see Marta Dahlig present a step by step tutorial of one of her paintings from SCRATCH – “, I’m also an avid reader of that magazine and haven’t seen a single preliminary sketch.

On a lighter note, I’m happy that you included Jason Chan, Artgerm, and Bobby Chiu – now THERE’S talent.. I wish that you included Don Seegmiller – his art has so much life to it. In fact, I learned digital painting from him.

All of these artists are zillion times better than Dahlig.

Personally I think it would actually be more of an insult though, I mean why on earth would you be doing something the hard way when the easy way will produce results just as nice and in way less time? And btw kiddo, I don’t need to research what I already make: http://www.backwater-productions.net/_images/GD-Batman.png

You know sunshine you really ought not to run around lying about other people’s websites. None of my websites are infected with anything, although at one point a month or so back Google falsely listed my site as being a “malicious” site, they paid me $500 not to sue them over it though and promptly took their slanderous accusation down. You should *NEVER* trust Google nor stopbadware.org as they frequently abuse their positions in order to spread slanderous lies in often very obvious attempts to try and ruin other people’s businesses. Really, they’re not much different from Malware coders when you get right down to it. Just a bunch of sleazy jackasses profiting off lies and misdirection.

Just because the artist can twist the female form in a way that allows the character to show you her asshole and titties at the same time does now make him, “Mind Blowing.” I’m gonna say you got maybe 38 mind-blowing digital paintings, and 6 fillers.

Mind-blowing? Seems like a bunch of cheesy futurist over-romanticized nonsense, “artwork” for the fantasy/sci-fi set, softcore porn for lonely male geeks and fan-art derivative of action films. There’s a fair amount of skill involved, obviously, but it still amounts to little more than an aggrandized teenage Dungeons and Dragons fantasy. It’s all representative work done within a limited range of styles, no doubt entirely derivative of comic books and anime. The people portrayed are ridiculous gender stereotypes, too–the men are half-metal muscle monsters and the women are these skinny little half-naked cyberpunk Barbie sex objects. It’s borderline misogynist. Not to mention the disturbing obsession that pervades all these paintings, that of a scary post-apocalyptic world in which the skies are all unnatural colors and the skyline is filled katakana billboards. It fetishizes guns, glorifies violence and objectifies women. At best, it’s a mediocre realization of a 15-year-old goth kid’s daydreams.

Most of these look like they came straight out of the color pages from the RIFTS gamer’s manual.

Either this is a benefit to the far reaching effect the game had _OR_ its just an inherent quirk of what happens when an RPG is rooted in so many fantasy traditions.

    Either way, great stuff.

This is all very lovely corporate commercial genre illustration — adept, highly skilled, well-composed. Also completely tasteless, meaningless and boring.

Sad to see that so many talented young people aspire to nothing more than endlessly ripping off things they’ve seen in big-budget movies and video games. Do Syd Mead and Frank Frazetta alone comprise the total of 4,000 years of visual culture? According to the Internet, the answer is yes. Bring on the cliche glowing swords, desert dystopias and cyberpunk endoskeletons until doomsday, I guess. Woohoo. Snore.

Nice work, but hardly mind-blowing. Most of it looks like book covers and game promotional art. If it had all been done with airbrushes it would not have surprised me. The days of it being harder to do something with digital tools vs trad media are long gone.

Wow, congrats to Bobby Chiu for being one of the only artists up there that seems to know anything about light and color. The subject matter is original, the creatures have appeal. His work STANDS OUT. Yeah, there are a few other good ones up there, but I picked him.

Some nice draftsmanship/craft up there on some of the others but these are represented as paintings. I feel like I’m in Local Color City. How about some warm/cools? How about some edge quality? How about some VALUE control? Focal point? And for most, the drawing is just mush underneath. No anatomy, no rhythm, no volume, no planes.

For those that have their minds blown, keep in mind with digital techniques, painting has become easier, faster, and more convenient than ever before.

Take a look at some mind-blowing artists who paint well with REAL media. Google these names!

    James Gurney
    Frank Frazetta
    NC Wyeth
    Frank Brangwyn
    JC Leyendecker
    John Singer Sargent

And because I’m not a snob there’s plenty of brilliant digital work out there.

    Ashley Wood (digital and real…)
    Jon Foster (same)
    Craig Mullins
    Erik Tiemens
Carlos Huante (digital paint / real drawings)
    Khang Le
    San Jun Lee

I could keep going but I hope people can discover more for themselves.

I’m not trying to knock anyone down but I hate how much exposure mediocre or “good” work gets, like it’s the only thing that ever existed, and it’s the best there is. “Digital” work will only be impressive as “new” for so long. This would have blow my mind 6 years ago, but not so much these days.

Real artists crit eachother and don’t always say positive or friendly stuff, because it’s the good cop that makes you feel happy and stay inspired, but the bad cop that forces you to work harder and get better.

For those of you that love this art, it’s great that you’re interested, but please keep going. Look at the great artists. If you already know about them, good for you, I’m not trying to say I know more than you.

Anyway, sorry for being a jerk. Good luck to all the artists in future, and for the reflexively positive comment-makers, please enjoy but keep looking (and thinking…)

a lot of good work on here. i know for sure, that one artist has done illustrations for Magic the Gathering, the trading card game. The artist is Aleksi Berclot.

I wouldnt be surprised if a few of the other artists, have done similar work. A lot of them tend to have the style of art generally used on things like that.

#4 Cris de Lara, Happy Halloween 2008. What’s going on with her left elbow? It’s not there. Her left shoulder bleeds right into her arm… it looks like a blob of flesh without an elbow. And her bellybutton looks like a LONG vertical scar. If she were real, that scar would be 9 inches long!

#9 Aleksi Bridot, third image… the army guy holding a machine gun. That’s mind-blowing???

#13 Robert Kim, 1st image… warriors walking towards the picture frame. That’s mind-blowing???

If these three images are considered mind-blowing than any average illustrator would be considered mind-blowing artists and those like the rest in this list would be gods.

If this is considered mind-blowing, then I’d say our standards have greatly fallen.

Sexistic, copy-cat art. Some good techniques and some are real creative. But alot is just tech and rpg geek fantasies. I’ve had them as a kid, but left them behind me to create something that has more sofistication and depth. Many of these are like: “Okey, I get it, an idealized half dressed model women with a gun and a cyborg”. Grow up.
