Christmas is just a few days away, so here is a tutorial showing how to create a Christmas design using Photoshop.
What we are going to do is really easy and can be very useful. For this tutorial, we will use some very cool icons as well. You can download them here. I hope you enjoy this little tutorial and that it inspires you to create your own last-minute postcard!
Step 1
Create a new document. Using a Layer Style, apply a Gradient Overlay, using a dark red to a black.

Step 2
Using the the Line Tool, let's create two lines as shown. This will be our reference for the Christmas tree.

Step 3
Let's place our Santa Claus Icon in the center of our tree. Using the Pen Tool, draw some lines like I've shown below. In order to do that, we need to change the way we will create our lines. Instead of using the Shape Layer, let's choose Paths.

Step 4
Now, still using the Pen Tool, let's round our lines choosing the Convert Point Tool.

Step 5
Next, create a new Layer Folder and name it "Star Tree." Change the Blending Mode to Color Dodge, then create a new layer inside this folder and name it "Stars path." Next open your Brushes Palette (Window > Brushes) and select the Brush shown below. Then set it at the values shown below in the screenshots.
Step 6
With our brush created, let's choose the Brush Tool and make sure that the brush we created is selected.
To create the star tree, make sure that you have selected the "Star path" layer. Using the Path Selection Tool (A), Ctrl-click Stroke Path. A dialog box will appear, and in there choose Brush. Make sure that the brush you created is selected.
Step 7
As you can see, the stars follow the path we created and they change size, rotation, and opacity. Now let's choose another brush, and in a new layer still inside the "Star Tree" folder, let's add some lighting effects. Select the brush shown below and paint a star over Santa's glass.
Next, in a new layer, paint a big star at the top of the tree.

Step 8
Select the "Star path" layer and double-click the layer to open the Layer Style dialog box. Select Outer Glow as shown below, and add some glow to the stars.

Step 9
Next we'll add our text. Choose the Horizontal Type Tool (F) and type XMAS (or whatever word you would like). Double-click the layer to open the Layer Style dialog box. Now let's add some effects. I learned this technique from a very nice tutorial I found online, and I have just changed it a little bit.

Step 10
To create the water floor-effect, just duplicate the text layer and flip it vertically (Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical). Move it right bellow the XMAS text and apply Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. After that, choose the Gradient Tool (G), set the colors to black and white, and fill the mask with it.

Step 11
Add the Merry text and some more icons and repeat the previous step to create reflections for all of them.

Step 12
Let's add a bit of snow.
- Set the colors to dark gray and black.
- Create a new layer and go to Filter>Render>Clouds.
- Apply some Gaussian Blur.
- Go to Filter>Pixelate>Mezzotint
- Add some Motion Blur
- Change the layer’s blending mode to Overlay at 30%.

Conclusion
This is a very easy way to create a beautiful Christmas wallpaper or even an e-card to send to your friends or clients. However, the best thing is that it shows a bit of what we can do with the Brush Engine, in my opinion one of the best features in Photoshop.
Happy holidays everyone!

Very nice, but I can´t get the same brush effect (fade in and fade out) since I don´t have a tablet.
( )basek December 22nd
You have to select “simulate pressure” when stroking path, that will make the job

It’s nice, but bevel on the text does not reflect the actual position of light (star on the top of imaginary tree).
( )kudos December 21st
That is bloody awesome, I’m gonna try this very soon to give it away to my loved ones. Thank you soo much
( )Brenton December 21st

This is probably a very basic question, but how did you get the center of the radial gradient to be in the top third of the screen? Was it originally in the center and then you cropped the window?
( )Mr.Kaype July 21st
You can manage the radial gradient as you like.
( )Andrew December 22nd
Wow that is a fantastic tutorial!
( )The Standard December 22nd
Very Very nice – Photoshop technique – There are so many usable techniques in this tutorial.
( )mahalie December 22nd
Great tutorial, I made a fall greeting using the leaf brush. Used my firms logo shape, but I think using a tree shape would be nicer. Anyway, an experiment: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2244/2127841288_788b954e05_o.jpg
( )react December 22nd
always surprising >:D
( )Ross December 22nd
As to Mahlie’s question:
You can drag the radial around while the dialogue box for the gradient is open, so if you want it in the corner you can put it in the corner. It had me stumped for a while too, I think it’s more intuitive than it feels. Hope that helps.
( )Mark December 22nd
Cool Tutorial
( )Hector Rojas December 22nd
i really wish you guys would stop the ‘xmas’ and go back to the original ‘christmas’
all in all a poor copy of the original as shown in one of your reader’s comment.
it still shows how to accomplish the copy though, so props for the actual tutorial.

Super! My respect to author and his site.
( )Art December 23rd
Brilliant tutorial, nice and festive. Very effective!
Nice job!
( )Robert December 23rd
Hi. The tutorial is great. I just think that the “snow” layer isn’t needed – it makes the image grainy. The card is better without. Anyway – it’s great;) Cheers
( )Zaigham December 23rd
Brilliant stuff man!
( )Gary Spedding December 23rd
I have stopped by a few times recently for these wonderful tutorials. I ran this one today with a nice result. Thank you so much for posting this. Enjoyed it enormously.

( )Shaindel December 24th
LOVE IT…!! Merry Christmas guys
( )BrisketKid December 24th
Wonderful tut. I agree that the snow effect in the background is a bit much, but I see the purpose. This technique is very versatile, and is open to other blending technique’s to produce some very dynamic textures.
I too have a question about the path stroke. My stars were not as vibrant as the ones you produced in the tut. I am wondering if I missed a step somewhere.
Thanks
( )Isaac December 25th
Great! Makes some amazing Christmas Gift tags. I couldn’t quite get the glass text right with that tutorial so I used the one from this site instead.
Keep up the great tutorials!
( )Swattkidd December 25th
Hey this is a great tutorial, but I was wondering how to get the icon into photoshop:(
( )Ion December 25th
Why Xmas and not Christmas?
( )Christ = X?
jayanti December 26th

( )RLCunningham December 26th

( )Sheilla December 26th

( )Moyer December 27th
I can’t get my stars to be shiney and glowing after I “stroke path.” What colors should I have selected? What am I doing wrong?
( )Adele December 27th
I loved this tut – although some of it was not explained that well I found.
( )Anyway – this site remains my fav for tutorials. Keep up the great work!
Mark Abucayon December 28th
That was so nice- Thanks for the effort and sharing this to us. Good luck
( )Pascal December 29th
How does one do the transition from white to red in the stroke of the stars? I read that you have to have a tablet….?
maybe future tutorial makers can mention this before the tutorial…
Maybe someone can mention another technique to get to this effect?
thanks!
great card by the way
( )Robert G December 29th
Very nice tut. You should create some tutorials for website interfaces. I am specifically looking for the style that looks like you are looking at a flat surface, for instance a desk that has a coffee mug on it, a blotter, stains, pencils etc, but all as if you were looking down at it, so you only get the top perspective, etc. That would be cool.
( )amira December 30th
so good ,thnx alot 4 ur nice way in explaining
( )Paris December 31st
I’m using Photoshop 7, although I have Elements 3 but it buggers my PC,
.. I can’t get the stars graduated. Do you change the brush size manually or does it just do it? And should I try on Elements?
More to the point
(I know it’s after Christmas, I like the Xmas Tree effect and wish to use it in my designs.)
Thanks so much
Best wishes for 2008,
( )Paris

Beautiful!!!
( )Mike February 2nd
Man that is beautiful. There were a few steps that needed a little more detail or instruction on how the effect was acheived, like steps 6 & 7. Some of it was kinda difficult to follow. Otherwise you have exceptional talent. Keep up the nice work.
( )Jel February 15th
I’m amazed – nicely done!

Some reason I can’t get my stars to glow like your with Color Dodge
Is there a filter applied?
( )Dufi December 2nd
I Stopped by step 6.
( )I can fill the path with stars but when the brush is white, all the stars became white and when the brush is red, all stars became red.
How can I make those stars like that blinking effect? Color Dodge no maka the same result as it show on screenshot.
I have no idea how to make the top star of the tree too.

Great Tutorial brah!, just it would help for the dimensions of the new document
( )MervynG December 1st
Yes indeed a great tutorial Fabio. I am learning so much here and all from scratch! One thing I can’t replicate is the wet flipped xmas. I can create the duplicate and flip it but my layer>layer mask>reveal all produces an all white layer mask thumbnail and not one with a rectangle in black at the bottom where the text is. As a result I can’t seem unable to produce the wet reflection effect. It just goes grey and almost flat. Anyone know what I am missing? Also my Xmas itself is whiter and brighter than Fabios. I can darken it but I am curious as to why with the same settings mine’s as if under a 100watt spotlight and Fabio’s is under a 10watt star?

Not enough information in this tutorial to make the final product look like yours.
No information on how to get the star at the top to look like that. And there is definitely something missing on how to make the stars look red, white, gold, etc. Mine all looks red (in different shades).
