You use them like you use paint on a wall that’s long overdue for a makeover.
Just work the textures into the background and experiment with blending effects, add stock photos even. Textures/brushes are meant to give images depth and variety, so experimentation is key to understanding it. A texture is usually a background.

Very nice textures and very useful. Is attribution required for freebies found on this site when they are used in commercial work?
Too bad the textures are compilations of brushstrokes themselves. It would be far better if this was a set of independent brush strokes. These textures would immediately stand out in a design and can only be used if almost invisible or unrecognizable.
You know it’s free, right? There are tons of A+ quality, paid brushes. Go for them :)
