The word bokeh is derived from the Japanese word boke. It’s a term used to describe the deliberate and creative use of lens blur in photography. In design, bokeh photographs or textures have many uses. They can be used as background images or even to draw interest to a specific part of a design. Today, we are giving away several unique grungy bokeh textures for you to use in your work for free.

Free textures, yay! Thanks.

Bokeh is not a thing you can point at in a photograph and say “look, there’s bokeh!” It’s a measurement of the aesthetic quality of blur, how objects seen in a photograph appear when transitioning from in focus to out of focus.
These (very nice!) images are not bokeh. They do illustrate a related phenomenon, the circle of confusion. Each individual small, hard light source will generate a somewhat hard-edged circle due to this phenomenon. The shape of it is determined mostly by the shape of the aperture.
Take a look here, at figures 6 and 9.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Glad you like them.
Sweet, awesome textures.
Thanks.
Nice. These bokeh effects are often used in cheezy japanese dramas often times, but when used like this, they actually look pretty nice.
I also laughed a bit because boke in japanese also means “retard” or “stupid” as a derogatory term.
Haha…that’s good to know. I’ll be sure to steer clear of that word if I ever visit Japan.
Greatest freebie ever!!! I absolutely love this. Much appreciated.
Hi, great stuff.
My question is: does the license allow to use it to built a commercial site template or is it understood as redistribution and forbidden?
Thanks for finding great bokeh-design! saves me a lot of time.
Thanks! These textures are great!
