Building Up PSDTUTS

DiggThis

Hey folks, it’s been a while since I posted about the site and its happenings.

There are actually quite a few bits of news, including a new member of the editorial team, more frequent postings, and some forums coming to the site. So on with the community updates …

First of all, how awesome is the PSDTUTS community getting! The subscriber base has reached over 12,000 people via RSS and Email. We have almost 500 members in the PSDTUTS Flickr group, and a massive 700 images there too! Our link feed is picking up subscribers too, and I hope that the sites being linked to are getting some traffic.

Also during January one of my favorite sites, SmashingMagazine, in their Best of Adobe Photoshop Tutorials called PSDTUTS

“…the most smashing collection of Adobe Photoshop tutorials available on the Web.”

I have just one word to say to that … Yay!

Welcome Sean to the Team

Next, I’d like to welcome a new member of the PSDTUTS editorial team. His name is Sean Hodge, and he’s going to be helping the site get to a bigger posting schedule by making our articles and wrap-ups more regular as well as by posting a few tutorials too! Sean runs a little Web studio called ConnectionCube, writes great Illustrator tutorials over at AiBURN, and runs a blog about blogging at BlogElephant. Be sure to pay him a visit in all of his Web haunts to say hello :-)

Things to Look Forward To

The main thing we’re working on at the moment is getting the posting to be more regular. At the moment, we’re putting out about two posts a week, but I’d love to get us up to 5 posts a week. Of course, this will take a bit of work to build up to, as it’s important we be consistent.

Also in February/March I’ll be adding PSDTUTS forums to the site. I’m looking at using either Vanilla, which we use on FreelanceSwitch, or regular ol’ PHPBB.

Finally, sales on the PSDs at the end of each tutorial have been picking up which is great. It’s not huge—in January we sold about $400 worth—but it’s paying for a few tutorials and growing. As some of you will remember, initially I’d hoped to make the sales through a subscription system, but I had some trouble finding one that worked. I think I’ve found a product now, and in February I’m going to try switching over and bundling some goodies in the subscription deal.

And Some Fixed-Up Broken Links

Also, a quick apology for the broken download links on our older tutorials this week. I redirected a domain without thinking and accidentally demolished them :-) But they’re all fixed up now!

On in to 2008

So anyhow, here’s a belated happy new year from the PSDTUTS team. I have no doubts that by the end of 2008, this site is going to be the powerhouse of photoshop blogs!

Hi Collis, I had been here since your most popular tutorial, the advance glow effects and started to love your site at that time also. I bet that this will be a great site and will be very popular. I also learn the web design tips here from your web design 1 px tips :P

I started my tutorial blogs last year. But the traffics seem not so promising… :( Maybe my tutorials aren’t good enough …. I seldom update the blog because of my daily job….and OT….

However, nice to see a site growing here :) like what Pillai said, feel like a family here. Even though I seldom comment here but I always visit here :)

    Thanks and congrats!

  4. Hamish M says:

Great work Collis. This site has come a long way. And I look forward to seeing it’s progress in the future.

Also, welcome to the PSDTuts team Sean!

Hey lukxiufung! I checked out your site, those tutorials are awesome, keep at it I think, consistency seems to be really important in blogging as readers learn that they should come back at regular intervals and become followers. Anyhow keep up the good work!

    @Hamis, thanks!!

I have to add something.. My resolution is 1280px/800px and in ie7 the sidebar is at the bottom under the list of post.. while with firefox the sidebar is in the exact position.. just a suggestion if you want to fix it..

  12. Hi there,

First of all I would like to Congratulate you Collis and the PSDTUTS team for your success.

It seems that PSDTUTS started this new year with a big step ahead so I wish it will keep it up.

Again, Congratulations for the success and for the big community PSDTUTS has got.

Last but not least, a worm welcome to the PSDTUTS family for Sean.

    Best regards
    Constantin

Hi Collis, really surprise that you leave a comment in my blog :) you made my day :D

Thanks! I will keep it up and can I ask anything I don’t know ? :P

    Thanks anyway :)

I like your tutorials, but you really need to fix your layout problems. We all know that many designers prefer Firefox (and that zealots prefer Macs), but it doesn’t make sense that a web-based tutorial site like this doesn’t even work properly in the world’s most widely used browser – Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  15. Hey lukxiufung,

Just took a look over your blog. I really love how it looks. ;)

As you must know I love the design of PSDTuts and your’s has the same design. Love it. ;)

Keep up the good work. :)

  16. Collis says:

@giackop: oh yikes, I didn’t know about the sidebar issue, I’ll get that fixed … soon! :-)

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. I look forward to contributing to such a great community.

  19. Collis says:

Hey guys, think I’ve fixed the IE problem – at least for IE7 – I’m not 100% sure what was causing it as I’m pretty darn certain that it was working when we launched the site. Anyhow weirdly i fixed a caching plugin for Wordpress and it fixed itself … strange huh :-(

  20. Matthias says:

    Hi,
    I like the tutorials here.
Are you really sure to post 5 Tuts a week? I hope the quallity will be the same if the count is growing.
I think less post but a high quallity would be better than more posts.

  21. giackop says:

yeah.. it was working at the beginning..

    anyway fixed now!!

  22. M. Kort says:

Great work is being done here!

I’m a regular visitor of the community and getting great tips from here!
    Keep up the good work!

  23. Mike C says:

    It’s fixed! Thank you!

  24. collis says:

Yay! I think i need to put some real hacks in for IE6, I can’t figure out what’s causing it to break and it could be buried somewhere in my css, that’s OK though, I’ll use those conditional commenty things for it.

Anyhow at least progressive IE7 people are fixed :-)

  25. Mike C says:

Yeah, I’m using IE7 (and occasionally Firefox too), but of course I didn’t check IE6. I know there are some fairly simple hacks out there to make it work, but I’m not sure exactly what you need.

  26. Azeem says:

Very nice blog…love reading ur posts…wish you the very best in future collis..Keep rocking!!

  28. Tony says:

    Nice to hear!

One link still seems to be broken though, the link for the html template on the write a tutorial page, I was thinking for writing a tut possibly, if it could be fixed that would be nice.

  30. Chris Laskey says:

Man, and I thought 2007 was good.

I’m glad you’re continuing to expand, hiring new staff members like Sean (hello, Sean!), and ramping up the updates. Also, the switch to nominal fees for the PSD’s was a great idea, and congratulations on their success so far ($400 is nothing to laugh at, especially in the first month).

I look forward to the subscription service, it’s a win win. We throw you some bones and get even more content? Sign me up.

    Cheers,
