We'll be announcing the winner of the AudioJungle Wallpaper Design contest this Friday the 18th of July. Now it's time to launch the next contest as well. If you have a great tutorial idea you've been working on, then now is the time to pull it together. The first PSDTUTS Tutorial Writing Contest is underway. We're accepting completed tutorials for a chance at publication and great prizes!
About the Contest
Time to sharpen your skills, break out your big box of ideas, and get to showing how to make great artwork in Photoshop. The first PSDTUTS Tutorial Writing Contest has officially launched. If you've ever wanted your tutorial featured on PSDTUTS, well now is the time! Not only will the winner be published, but they'll receive great cash and membership prizes.
The idea for this contest was suggested by one of our members in the comments of the post, What Do You Think Would Make a Great PSDTUTS Contest? Thanks for the suggestion Jerry. There are a ton of great ideas for contests in that post, and we'll likely use contest ideas generated by our members again. So, feel free to add any ideas you have there as well.
If you've ever wanted to write a tutorial for PSDTUTS, now is a great time to get involved!
How to Enter
To enter this competition send in your completed tutorial between July 21st, 2008 until July 27th, 2008. Use our PSDTUTS Completed Tutorial Submission form for contest entries. Place the text CONTEST ENTRY before your author description in the *2-4 Sentences About You: form field. This will alert us that this is an entry for the contest.
The dates are limited so the contest doesn't effect our normal publishing schedule. It also gives you a week to come up with your tutorial ideas before we start accepting submissions.
We'll not be accepting Preview Submission for this contest, so do use the PSDTUTS Completed Tutorial Submission form only. We'll still be accepting normal (non-contest) tutorial submissions during this timeframe as well.
You should review the Write A Tutorial Page for formatting information. Also, If you want to know more about what makes a great Photoshop tutorial, then review this article, 5 Important Criteria that Make a Great Photoshop Tutorial. If you need advice on writing a great Photoshop Tutorial, then review this article, How to Create Step-by-Step Photoshop Design Tutorials. Good luck!

( )Constantin Potorac July 15th
THis will be a very interesting contest. I am looking forward to see what will people post.
( )Kyle July 15th
accepting, not excepting. Good contest idea as well.
( )Jonathan Solichin July 15th
This will sure bring out the best.
If the tutorial is good enough for psdtuts, but not good enough to win, will it still be accepted and used?
( )MONSTER July 15th
Decent prize pool.
( )Sean Hodge July 15th
@Josh. Thanks for the question.
We’ll be accepting regular tutorial and article submissions for our normal publishing on the site, during the course of this contest.
For the contest itself though, it’s limited to Tutorials Only. So for the contest only submit complete tutorials via the PSDTUTS Completed Tutorial Submission form. And be sure to mention in the author description the words “CONTEST ENTRY.”
( )Sean Hodge July 15th
@Jonathan Solichin - We’ll certainly consider publication for non-winning entries.
Basically, if a non-winning entry looks like a good fit for the site we’ll contact you and discuss publication. So, we won’t automatically publish non-winning entries. We may contact you to discuss this though.

Kyle - Thanks for catching the typo. I hate typos!

I’m going to seriously consider entering, I’ve been lurking this site for a while…
( )Jonathan Solichin July 15th
@Sean Cool! Thanks for the speedy reply. Looking forward to the winners
( )Zim July 15th
Interesting! I’ll consider doing one, it’s worthy.
( )Dan July 15th
Sorry, but something about this “contest” doesn’t seem right. A lot of people are basically pitching tutorials (finished tutorials, if I may add) and you get to pick 3 of the best to publish while disregarding the rest (at least most of the rest). You’re putting the whole community to work, but only rewarding a few. Just my humble opinion. All the best to those who wish to participate.
( )Josh July 15th
@ Dan - That’s what a contest is. You take that risk of putting in the work and not winning anything. PSDTUTS can’t give something to every participant, they’d lose too much money.
( )Nate July 15th
This should be fun and interesting.
( )kailoon July 15th
A good way to boost up the tutorial’s quality
Can’t wait to see the result.
( )Kendra July 15th
Slightly off-topic post, but is anyone else unable to login to their PSDTuts+ member area?
I’ve been getting this message for hours
” Connection Interrupted - The document contains no data. - The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again. “

( )Nindia July 15th
should be good!
( )Chris July 15th
If you think about it, this will definitely be a contest. People will really be forced put their skills to the test. Along with have the ability to help PSD develop a stronger community (or help realize how pathetic we are). Either way, Im up for the contest! This has been an area Ive always thought I was qualified for but never took the initiative. I think everyone everyone will benefit and enjoy this experience (Excluding Dan-zy Pansy above me. Obviously hes in a bad mood guys… lets just leave him alone so he can one day be happy off the photoshop tutorials we provide him in this contest, funny how that works.)
( )Danny July 15th
Awesome contest, looking forward to the tuts!
( )RUGRLN July 15th
Hmmm….$400, or Amazon Gift Voucher! Now we talking!!
I’m definitely gna give this a try!!
( )Dan July 15th
@Chris
( )You’re entitled to your own opinion, as am I. But do try expressing it in a more mature fashion…
Joefrey Mahusay July 15th
This is really exciting!
( )Jeff July 15th
I agree with Dan. Not the best idea for a contest.
( )puffgirl July 15th
intresting.
( )kailoon July 15th
@Dan
I agree with that too.
( )You have your point
diesel July 15th
Great idea…unfortunately I am snowed under with the website!
( )joharin July 15th
Hey…what happen then to the rest who don’t win? will the tutorials be used for psdtuts? if that is the case, will the author gets the usual pay?
Thanks…;-)
( )I9ºR July 16th

( )Chris July 16th
@ Dan: I understand we both can have our own opinions. And I do follow my values strictly by maturity…In real life. But I also understand that the internet is the new social melting pot of personalities. Someone might say something to upset you and the best you can do (with out violating your maturity clause), is to walk away. The same thing goes for this right here. It would have been best to leave all the negative thoughts about this at the door then attempting to project them at everyone else. No one likes a party pooper, and this is our party. Either enjoy what PSD and many other sites have to offer you and disregard the community members you dont like, or choose not to be part of what you have.
( )Dan July 16th
Chris,
( )It’s really not my intention to continue our little conversation. So before I give in to the temptation, I just want to say to all who do participate (including you) - have a blast. As for my expressed negative thoughts, they were not intended to offend or discredit anyone.
Sean Hodge July 17th
@Dan - We certainly respect your opinion. However, we did carefully consider what prizes we would offer that would make this contest beneficial to both the entrants and the PSDTUTS community. Thx.
@Chris - I think that if Dan has concerns about the contest, he should voice them. I don’t see anything unprofessional about the manner he commented. We actually want to know how the community feels about things like contests. Contests are still a fairly new feature of the site and honest feedback is helpful. We appreciate your support though. Thx.
@joharin - Authors maintain all rights to non-winning entries. We are open to negotiating with authors. If your tutorial does not win, but meets the high quality-standard of the PSDTUTS site, we are open to considering the tutorial for publication. I’m happy to get to know new tutorial writers and potentially work with them. Thx.
( )Sean Hodge July 17th
@Everybody - I’m heading off for vacation in a couple hours. I’ll be back before Monday to answer any more questions that come up. I look forward to seeing some of the first entries on Monday. Thx.
( )shelbi July 19th
“If you’ve ever wanted to write a tutorial for PSDTUS, now is a great time to get involved!”
…you spelled your own name wrong.
( )Sean Hodge July 22nd
@shelbi - Thx for catching the typo!
( )Josh July 22nd
I have an idea of what I’d like to do for this, but it would be very long so I was wondering if it’s possible to write Part 1 now, then do Part 2 if I win (and part 3 if it comes to that)?
Thanks,
( )Josh
Sean Hodge July 26th
@Josh - We’re certainly willing to discuss multi-part tutorials, though we typically review the entire tutorial before publishing. We are open to the concept though. Feel free to submit your ideas. I don’t think a multi-part tutorial is right for the contest, but we’re always interested in discussing concepts. Feel free to send in your idea using the submission form and attach a preview image. Thx.
( )Sean Hodge July 26th
Quick update - We’ve only had a few people send in tutorials so far. It’s a real quick contest, so if you participate you’re odds of winning are high. Good luck to everybody.
( )Bill Labus July 28th
“…if you participate you’re odds of winning are high.”
Implying something about the quality of the entries that have been submitted so far? Just kidding.
Can’t wait to see the winners.
( )xtatic July 28th
Can’t we post anything unless we have a paypal???
