Advanced Glow Effects

Sep 15th in Effects by Collis
In this tutorial, we're going to create some really sharp-looking glow effects using a combination of layer styles, the Pen Tool and Color Blending. The end effect is quite stunning and hopefully you'll pick up some tips you didn't know before.

Hello! I started Psdtuts+ because years ago reading Photoshop tutorials was how I got into design. You can find me on Twitter or on my blog theNetsetter.

Step 1:

As with pretty much every tutorial I've ever written, we begin with a radial gradient. This one is pretty harsh and goes from a reddish brown color to black. Here are the exact color codes:

Foreground color - #922f00
Background color - #000000

Step 2:

In this tutorial, we actually need a pretty intense center, so what we'll do is duplicate the layer we just made and set the one above to a blending mode of Color Dodge. There are a few types of blending modes, darkening ones, lightening ones, colorizing ones and inverting ones. Color Dodge is probably the strongest of the lightening ones. As you can see in the screenshot, it produces a pretty full-on center.

Step 3:

Now in our glow effect, it helps to have a nice textured background. So we are going to create a sort of smoky haze. To do this, create a new layer, then make sure you have white, #ffffff, and black, #000000, selected as your background and foreground colors.

Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. This will give you the same random cloud pattern as above.

Step 4:

Now set the opacity of your layer to Overlay and 30% transparency. In some instances this would be enough, but for our needs we want it even smokier looking!

So go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and use default settings of 4 and 7 for detail and smoothness respectively. Actually you can probably mess around with those if you want, but the defaults seem to be fine.

When you're done, the result should look a lot smokier (once its overlayed at 30% transparency that is). You can see the result in the background of the next screenshot.

Step 5:

Now before we can start making glows, we need to have something to glow. Here's where we break out the pen tool. If you have used the pen tool much I suggest playing around with it a little. There are some tricky things you can do with shortcuts, but for this tutorial you don't need those.

In fact all we want to achieve are some nice curves. Fortunately this isn't too hard. I find the trick is not to use too many points. Instead rely on the Pen Tool's natural curving and drag the mouse out for each point so you get a big angle. In this S-curve shown above, I've only used three points, the starting point, the end point and one in between to give it the bend.

Step 6:

Once you have a nice curve, create a new layer. Then click on the Paintbrush Tool (B) and choose a very thin, hard brush. As you know, soft brushes are the blurry ones and hard brushes are more solid. In this case I suggest using a thickness of 3.

Note that you can have any color selected as your brush color because we'll go over it with a layer style shortly.

Step 7:

Now switch back to the Pen Tool. You must switch tools in order to do this next bit.

Then right-click and select Stroke Path. A little dialog box will appear as in the screenshot. Choose Brush and make sure there is a tick next to Simulate Pressure. This is important as it will give your curve tapered ends which will make it rock!

Next right click again and select Delete Path.

Step 8:

You should now have something like the above. Just a thin, cool swishy thing.

Step 9:

Now we add some glows. The easiest way to make our glows is to use layer styles. And the best way to tell you what layer styles to use is to tell you to download the sample Photoshop PSD from the bottom of this page and then open it up and look through them there.

In a nutshell, I've added two sets of glows. To do this I first use Outer Glow and then because I want a second glow, I change the Drop Shadow settings so that it becomes a glow (you can do this by reducing the Distance and changing the blend mode to something like Color Dodge)

Oh and also I've used a Color Overlay to make the item white so that its like the center of an intense glow.

Step 10:

So now you have the same line but with a cool glow coming off it. The beauty of using a layer style is that you can copy and paste it to other layers. To do this you just right-click the layer and select Copy Layer Style then create a new layer and right-click and choose Paste Layer Style.

Step 11:

So now repeat the same process a couple of times to make more squiggly lines.

In this instance, I made one a little thicker by changing the paint brush size before I did the Stroke Path bit of the process. I also made a third line and erased part of it and sorta made it join the other two to look like a cool triangular shape.

Step 12:

Here I've added some text in and applied the same layer style to the text layers.

It's important to pay lots of care and attention to your text. When you're first starting out, use simple fonts and play with spacing between letters, words and sizes. You can achieve a lot with just some small tricks. Here I've contrasted the three words by making Glow a lot larger and in regular casing, then made Advanced and FX much smaller, with greater space between the letters and all caps.

You can control spacing with text using the Character window. If it isn't already open go to Window > Character and it should appear. Mess about with the different settings until you learn what each controls.

Step 13:

Now we add some particles. To do this, create a new layer then select a tiny paint brush - size 3 - and just paint some dots on. It helps if they are clustered towards the center of the glow so that it looks like they are emanating from there.

You can make some of the central ones larger by doubling over on them with a second paint brush dab.

Then paste our Glow layer style on to that layer too!

Step 14:

Now that's looking pretty cool, but it will look even cooler if we give it some subtle coloring instead of this super gaudy red.

So create a new layer, and using a radial gradient, draw a blue to white gradient as shown.

Step 15:

Then set that layer to a blending mode of Color and change the opacity to 50%.

You'll see that it turns the image kind of bluish. I think that's looking much cooler already, but just to go that extra step I also created a couple of extra layers, one with some faint yellow and one with faint purple. You can see them in the screenshot above.

I set each layer to blending mode of Color and thin opacities so that they all fade together.

Step 16:

And there you have it: advanced glow effects with a cool color blend and subtle smoky background combined make for a pretty great effect.

Just remember to experiment with settings and try applying the glow to different things to see how it turns out. And try different color combinations, some surprising combinations turn out really beautiful. Good luck!

The effect is very nice however I have some issues, It would be helpful if you included more specific information with some steps. For example, there is no mention of the new document size and text size which can have a huge impact upon the outcome.
I found that i spent most of my time trying to guess the appropriate document size settings so that the effects would work correctly for me.
Also there is no mention of what to do if “stroke path” isnt available on the right click menu.
I can follow all the steps you provided but I found that the information that wasn’t provided made this too hit and miss for me.
I couldn’t get the effect to turn out as it looks in your tutorial and I followed every step exactly.
I’m dissappointed because this would otherwise be an excellent tutorial and effect but there’s just too many assumptions made by the tutor.

To get the stroke path to be clickable you have to select Paths as the type of path you’re creating. To do this simply click the middle icon in the first set of pen options from the pen toolbar. The pen toolbar can be found at the top of your screen, just below the menubar. Make sure to have selected the Pen tool first or you will not see the correct toolbar. Hope this helps!

    “Step 4:

this should say “blending mode”, not “opacity”, but that’s a small error. :)

i appreciate that you provide a bit of thought behind what you are doing, rather than just telling the exact steps. you could do more of this, though… also, it might be useful to some to know exactly what the blending effects are doing. (i.e., what exactly is color dodge doing? not everyone knows these things.)

i think people like it here because it is clean and simple to understand; you’ve definitely started out well!

im using CS2 also. you have to select Paths AFTER you select PEN TOOL. the button is at the bar on top (by default) below the “File, Edit, Image,…” bar. a icon of a pen inside a box.

    hope that you’ll find that.

for those who couldnt get the tappered edges to work, make sure the brusgh hardness is set to 0% and the same for all the settings in brush dynamics. This worked for me and I had spent ages trying to get it working.

To those who are having trouble with the Stroke Path being grayed out, I have run into the same trouble and figured it out.

It could be you are forgetting to add the new layer when choosing your brush size and color. This is imperative. You must have this new layer still selected when going back to the pen tool.

If somehow you end up with the Work Path on its own layer, then you must right click that layer and Rasterize it. Then simply right click on your image with the pen tool and Stroke Path.

    Ok, fixed it
    Another question though.

How did yuo get that lovely text of yours to kind of mesh with the rest of the lines? i noticed that on my version of this thingy, it didn’t let me do that. I’ve tried a couple things, but anything that would help me out is greatly appreciated. Tanks

Filter effects are grayed out -> you might check your color mode and make sure to have it on RGB. Goto “Image” menu, then mode. When prompted to flatten all layers, click “don’t flatten.”

    Excelent tut mate!!. 5 Stars.

For those who got stucked in the “stroke path”, step 7-8, (like me), i tried using the “warp” tool (edit>transform>warp)after stroking and deleting the path, to get the ends of the curve more soft. Just warp the left and right corners of the box till you get the edges like you want.

Anyway, if someone knows a better way to do this part, i’d like to know it, because i did all the “pen/brush/pen” steps and my line allways results with the same width. ;)

    Junny,

I was banging my head on the keyboard trying to figure out the “stroke path” also…. turns out, the layer i had it in was not the top layer. Don’t ask my how I got it messed up, but I did. Make sure the layer you use the pen tool is the top most layer, and try it again just as stated, it works perfectly.

Thank you so much for this tutorial / Idea, I have already put a great add logo together!!

The most respectful thing I saw on this site was no stupid or boastful comments. I get so tired of reading things like ‘U Suck, that was shit, man’ from the low end jerk with the same name or the ‘I kin do a bunch better’ from the braggarts. Congrats to all who left comments too. Hi there, as a newbie to photoshop i’m having a bit of trouble following this tutorial. The effect looks great but if only i could get past stage 3!

I’ve tried everything i know to get the filter gallery to be able to use the cloud filter. When i click new layer and select it (either by using the rectangular marque tool / filling it with color), the cloud filter is grey’d out.

Could somebody point me to the error in my technique pls.

    Step 7:
Now switch back to the PEN tool. You must switch tools in order to do this next bit.

Then right click and select “Stroke Path”. You will get a little dialog box appear as in the screenshot. Choose “Brush” and make sure there is a tick next to “Simulate Pressure”. This is important as it will give your curve tapered ends which will make it rock!

Next right click again and select “Delete Path”.

Having problems with this. when i right click i cant click on the stroke path button, its gray.

Great tutorial for modern and stylish design. i’ve often used a similar glow effect when creating headers or signatures websites . I often use CS3 at college but i had trouble getting the tapered ends of the glow when i was using CS2 at home but the problem was soon sorted after i changed the brush tip shape to “Shape Dynamics” , which can be found under , Window > Brushes .

hope this helps anyone having trouble with the Tapered ends of the glow stroke.

For CS3 users. For normal Pen tool Stroke Path doesn’t work (for me) – that option was still grey. But if I make shape, than do curves and so on, it goes. Nice work!

I also had the stroke path-problem, but here’s a solution that, at least, worked for me:
Draw a path using the Pen tool.
Create a new layer and pick a brush and color.
Use the Path selection tool to mark the path you did before.
Go the the “Paths”-tab (usually next to the layers-tab). If you don’t have it, go to “Window” at the top-navigation of your screen and add it.
Do a copy of of the path. (this option will be greyed out, but you can double-click it to make one)
Go back to the “Layers”-tab and mark the path, and the layer you want the path to go in, and then right-click and use your Stroke Path.

Remove the paths and layers you don’t want anymore, and you’re all done!

Maybe this solution is a bit messy, but it works :)

Hey is anyone having problems when adding the coloring layers at the end? After I add just one of them, and pull the opacity down, the whole image starts to kind of gray out and get muddy. Any tips? Thanks!

I found a solution to my previously mentioned problem. To avoid having the whole image become more and more washy when adding the color layers at the end, I found it helps to have each of the gradients go from your desired colors to transparency, rather than white. Hope that helps. Cheers.

One thing I’ve noticed that doesn’t seem to be mentioned. Seems this was created using 72dpi. When I attempted this tutorial at 300dpi, the ‘grain’ in the clouds appeared much smaller, thus affecting the chrome filter when applied to the cloud effect, making the smoke appear smaller as well. Enlarged the cloud layer a few 100% and looked more like the tut.

So I played with the glow effects on this after working out the tutorial. I didn’t like how the glow was a set color. I would have liked them to be reactive of whatever was below. Here’s how I tweaked them (everything is the same as the tutorial except what is specified):

Outer Glow: Color is set to white (FFFFFF), blending mode to “Linear Dodge (Add)”, Opacity is 60

Drop Shadow: Color is set to white (FFFFFF), Opacity is 60

Now the streaks are on top, and react to the colors below. This is more flexible for me.

I also used gradient layers instead of the gradient tool. Just my thoughts. Thanks to the Church Marketing Lab for pointing me to this site.

if you change the gradient from (color-white) to (color-transparent) on the last step of the tutorial the colors get less faded.

I made sure the tic mark was checked next to “simulate pressure”, but no avail. It looks great, but without the sharp pointy ends it just looks a little too “in your face”.

Alright, I got to step five. I’m trying to create a path. Done. Three points. I create a new layer. I select the brush tool and select white as my color. I switch back to the pen tool, right click and select “stroke Path”. Brush, simulate pressure… The only thing that lights up are my points in the path, the actual path isn’t filled in. I’m a beginner, but I can’t get past this step. Any ideas? Thanks a million!

Also, with the same steps as above, I choose “stroke Path” and choose pencil. This creates a nice thick line along the path, but I can’t get the brush to do the same. Helppp? This is an awesome tut, I really need to learn this process right here.

    123 September 24th

Ahha!! The beautiful answer! Ok, beginning users. At step five you’re instructed to define a path on the same layer as the cloud layer. Then, you must create a new layer and choose your brush size with 100% hardness. You may only get circles at the paths points after you “stroke path” to get your glowing line. To FIx:: Go to your brushes palette that is either docked in the top right corner, or floating on your screen and make sure shape dynamics is checked on. Then go up to “brush tip shape” and go to the bottom and check “spacing” on. You’ll notice the tip now makes a line instead of the two dots. :D Very obvious to some, but I’ve had no prior learning experience and I started using photoshop last week :) So for those of you who are just beginning, I’ve hoped to help! Wonderful TuT!!

Great tutorial! Thank you so much for sharing.

I didn’t read through every comment but I was having issues with “stimulate pressure” option after trying to stroke the pen path and the solution I found was to select the Brush tool , the Pencil tool , or other painting tool in the toolbox.
Click the Brushes tab to bring the Brushes palette to the front or, if the palette isn’t open, choose Window > Brushes.
To make the tool tip size change with pressure, select Shape Dynamics (be sure to click the word, not just the check box) in the Brushes palette. Then choose Pen Pressure from the Controls menu under the Size Jitter slider control. This completely fixed the issue :) )

    I got this from http://en.allexperts.com/q/Adobe-Photoshop-1028/Pen-Tool-Stimulate-Pressure.htm

I don’t use a wacom tablet or any other type but this fixed my problem even with just using my mouse. I hope it’s helpful. I copied and pasted from the site just in case it ever happened to disappear as sites tend to do on occasion.

incase your stroke path is inactive disabled grayed out, simply make a new layer, and and click the path you made on the layers panel, and drag it and drop it on the new blank layer. this fixed it for me.

To create some nice additional effects, you can select the both background gradients (the color-dodged one and the original). Then click right>Merge Layers. After this, select the merged layers, click right>blending options>pattern overlay. Select some nice pattern, change the blending mode to overlay, and see what happens (for example, pick the Color Paper>Graph Paper pattern)

Oh and for the people who can’t get the fading effect: read Gnelfelf’s post! Your brush settings should look like this:
    NOTHING SELECTED EXCEPT FOR:
    -Smoothing (optional)
-Shape Dynamics: All sliders should be 0%, and control should be set to pen pressure
[maybe you could add this to the tutorial]

  760. Very informative post indeed!! Glow effects are no-doubt popular these days. But I believe that you should be very careful with the color blending and shades. The texture of your background is equally important. Though professional can try these glow and faded effects, the layman should go easy with it. Nevertheless, designing is all about creativity and it is always worth taking a risk!

How do i put the pen tool in path mode, and i got stuck in step 7, after creating the carve line in step 5( with fill 0) when I create a new layer in step 6 the shape just becomes invisible, was that supposed to happen? Anyway, and then I follow the step 7 and the Stroke Path is unclick able. What did I do wrong? I am using cs2.

When you add the glows, what settings did you use for the outer glow? You give the settings for the drop shadow and say that the inner glow (I think) is white. If I just add an outer glow without messing with the settings, it doesn’t turn out right. I messed with them for a while but can’t get it to look right.

You need to download Photoshop CS4 which current cost is in the 300-700 IDK exact. There are ways to get it for free but that is Google and YouTubes’ job to help you. USE YOUR RESOURCES!!! Unfortunately I cannot guide you one where to get it because it is illegal.

I am having a problem with the drop shadow. I created a test case illustrating the following. When i set the drop-shadow setting manually using the same settings in the sample psd it come out much lighter than if i copy and paste the layer style done by Collis.
