I think you couud just hold Ctrl and click in the layer of birds to select them Then, you could press Ctrl+Shif+I to invert the selection and delete everything but the birds.
I think it could give you a better effect than with this non-working reveal all. =D

I noticed the sunk in effect didn’t show in your video tutorial. What you wanted to do was decrease the “fill opacity” to 0% not the general opacity of the layer to get the desired effect.
