    Ouch.. Back in 90′s ^^
Bad graphic quality for a premium Tut.
Far away from Wrigley’s 5 of Peter Jaworowski :

I agree, the 5 gum design is pretty amazing. It is clean, simple… and the use of black really makes this design pop on shelf. When I was at Interbrand, our office developed the packaging for Wrigley’s products… and I had the chance to make some of the concept’s backgrounds for 5. But, to be honest, it is a REALLY simple design, and showing how to re-create a background like that wouldn’t make for a good tutorial.

With this execution, I wanted to show a wide range of techniques for creating the background elements. After all, this is more of a PSD tutorial more than a design concept evaluation or crit. I hope you had the chance to take a look at the tutorial, and hopefully you might have learned a little trick or two (and enjoyed the extras!). Thanks for the feedback, as I will consider it for future tutorials.

    Premium? lol, I mean, seriously..?

Except in the real world of packaging you’re expected to start from a render FIRST to sell the concept to a client, THEN work through to the actual print ready production art.

You are correct, which is exactly what this is. Typically, in the real world, you at least have a die, or measure the package to make one, and work through the concept. Once you settle on the final design, then you go through the process of the implementation/production work. The goal is to not have to “recreate” the whole design during the production of the file. Simple things like trying to work at 300dpi, working with CMYK (or in this case, most likely spot colors) will make that process easier. Hope you enjoy the tutorial!

Tutorials aren’t all about creating mind-blowing backgrounds and fancy effects. Some people just don’t understand this.

I thought the tutorial was really well written and helpful. Some very useful tips and techniques. The bonus material was really great too.

    Thank you Tim :)

The work of PJ was a bad example. It is not appropriate, I agree with Wildia, Margaret and Tim Kyde.
But I still think the tutorial is not the graphic level of a Premium Tut.

    Good tutorial but why Premium?

  • Ana S.

I agree with Wildfia that tutorials aren’t all about creating mind-blowing backgrounds and fancy effects. However, the fancy effects is what mainly attracts learners to subscribe to Premium. It’s like food, it may be delicious, but if it does not look good enough ppl won’t even touch it. It’s why the fancy restaurants decorate their plates, in order to attract clients.Same with tutorials. Most ppl get interest in learning a tutorial based on what they look, before thinking about what new techniques it has to offer.
