Create a 60′s Psychedelic Style Concert Poster

Download Source Files

In this tutorial, we will go through the steps to create a retro 1960s psychedelic concert poster. This tutorial relies heavily on the use of the Warp Tool, but includes a few other techniques as well. Let’s get started.

Step 1

Create a new document with a poster-like size ratio. Visualize how you want the document to be laid out and draw some rough guides with the Brush Tool (B) on a new layer called “guides”. I drew several different compartments that will each contain a different piece of text and one that will contain an image.

Step 2

Make a solid color adjustment layer and fill it with a deep purple. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool(U). Set the radius so that you get a nice rounded edge that you like. Make sure that you set Make Work Path As Checked on the property bar. Now click and drag to make your border. Grab the Pen Tool (P), and while holding Command, click and drag to select the path. Then click in the Subtract Path button on the property bar. Then make a solid color adjustment layer and fill it with an orange color.

Step 3

Now to set the first bit of text. I used a font called Hobo Std for mine. Grab the Text Tool (T) and click anywhere in the canvas. Then type your text. Hit Command+T and scale the text up so that it fits the first compartment. Hit enter to set the transform. On the Layers Palette, right click on the text layer and select Convert to Shape. This turns the text into paths.

Step 4

Go Edit>Transform>Warp and warp the text to fit the compartment. I find it’s easiest to start with the corner handles and then adjust the others afterwards. The Warp Tool can take some getting used to, though it’s fairly intuitive. Play around with it until you get a good result. Repeat this step for all the text compartments.

Step 5

Now let’s go back in and change the color on some of this text. First, I want some of the text to have a stroke. Make the fill color on the ‘with special guests’ layer white. Then set the layer’s blending mode to Multiply. Double-click on the layer to the right of the layer’s name to open the Layer Styles Palette. Give the layer a stroke with the settings below. Go ahead and change the colors on the other text to whatever you like. Also, apply a stroke to some of the other text.

Step 6

Many of these old posters were screen printed. Lets give ours a little of that effect. Load the selection of the ‘Lumedia’ layer by Command+Clicking on its vector thumbnail. Hit (M) for the Marquee Tool. Then hit the arrow keys to move the selection down and to the right. Now hit Alt+Command+Click on the same layer thumbnail to subtract from the selection. Make a new solid color adjustment layer just above the original text and fill it with your secondary color. Set the Opacity to 75% and give it a nudge so it doesn’t line up correctly. That way it will look more handmade.

Step 7

The thing that is really going to make this look good and realistic is some texture. I have a paper texture that I got from BittBox that will do nicely. Copy the texture into the document. Then put it at the top in the Layers Palette. Set the blending mode to Linear Light and set the Fill to 25%.

Step 8

Now let’s move on to our image that will fill the rest of the poster. I got an image of a female singer from iStockphoto. Duplicate the blue channel by dragging it to the New Channel button at the bottom of the Channels Palette. Apply a harsh curve to it that looks something like below. Do the same to the red channel. Now invert each of the two new channels you made by selecting them and hitting Command+I.

Step 9

Make a new Solid Color adjustment layer and fill it with the lightest color that you used in the poster. Load the selection of one of the channels you made by holding Command-clicking on its thumbnail in the Channels Palette. Make a new Solid Color adjustment layer above the previous one and fill it with one of the other colors from the poster. Do the same with the remaining channel that you created and fill it with the remaining color from the poster.

Now on each of the masks on the solid color adjustment layers, apply a threshold. Go Image>Adjustments>Threshold and drag the slider until you get the detail that looks good to you. Do the same for the other mask on the other color.

Step 10

Now, let’s get back to the poster. With the Pen Tool (P), draw a path around the blank area of the poster. Make a new group by clicking on the folder icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. With the path highlighted, hit the Add Layer Mask button twice to apply the path as a vector mask.

Conclusion

Now drag the three color fill layers from the singer image over to the poster document and put them into the group that you just created. Scale the image to fill the space as you see fit. I flipped mine horizontally to make it fit better.

Our final 1960s psychedelic-style concert poster is below. Have fun with these techniques and this style of design.

this was one of the better tutorial on PSD tuts!1 I am new to photoshop and editing but could finish this one in one go, so that’s saying a lot! ;)

and yeah, here’s my tribute to hendrix using this tut – http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6424/hendrixposter.jpg

  • VGREER

I’m on the first couple steps and looking at your PSD it seems you used a vector mask on the orange to get the orange-yellow border. Yet no where in that section do you mention that.

In fact I had to go through step 2 several times to discover that what you meant was for us to:

    1) create the rounded rectangle path

    2) select it using the PATH SELECTION Tool, not by choosing the pen tool and holding down control and then Marquee-selecting the path (you can do it either way but why bother selecting the pen tool if you aren’t going to draw paths with it-that is confusing)

3)Create a new Solid Color Adjustment Layer. By creating the Solid Color Adjustment Layer with a path selected, the path is automatically used as a vector mask.

Anyway, I’ll go on and finish the tut now. Thanks for making it, I just wanted to give you some feedback. I hope you don’t take offense.

    • VGREER

Well I’m working on the text warping and once again you forgot to mention that the paths that we are manipulating are to be used as vector masks for solid color adjustment layers-just a heads up for anyone who might be confused

  • tiffizzler

haha my photography teacher showed us this and we did this as one of our projects and it came out really cool(: ♥

  • hoantran

Plz help. I could not make perfect in step 9 and 10. How to get the good result like picture…Please detail..

    Thanks

  • Cassie C

Failed to mention this is only possible in CS2 or higher. I only have CS and there is no WARP function..

  • c0ward

this tuturial sucks. wth is going on in step 2?

  • robin O’Bara

    try this poster

  • Heide

Is it possible to have a little bit more detail for steps 8-10? I’m totally stuck and I’m using this style for my wedding invitations. Any help would be appreciated. Like…even if somebody could just re-word steps 8-10 in a way that a Photoshop-retard could understand it, that would be cool. Or if there’s another way to achieve a similar result on the picture-part of the poster…somebody please let me know. Thank you.

  • asia

    someone explain 1-4

  • Taylor S

-__- I couldn’t find it either, then I right-clicked while on the text thing, and the last option said at the bottom ‘Warp text’. Maybe it’s there for yours…?

  • Pug

    thank you for this tutorial!

  • Chris

What is the “Command” button in windows?

    • ooopsie

I believe “Command” is for Mac. If you’re using Win, use Ctrl.

  • suelene couto

great tutorial, thanks for sharing it with us. could you please clarity step 9 and 10?

  • ooopsie

Heyyy. Can somebody tell me how the hell can you warp like that in CS4? I’m stuck. Ugh. Thanks. :))

    • Andrew

In CS4, you can warp like that when you rasterize the type (right click the layer with the text, option in there). Once you rasterize the type, you can complete all of the transformations available under Edit>Transform>Warp (near the middle of the transform drop down box).

Also for those struggling with the girl, what I did was create 2 duplicate layers of the subject after sizing the picture how I want it between the letters and the edge of the paper. I then did Image>Adjustments>Threshold and since I chose the layer in the back, I moved the slider to the right enough to be able to see the general outline and shape of the person, but I let it have some white in there (will be the background color). Once I did the threshold, I went to Select>Color Range and used the eye dropper to select the white in the threshold picture and cut it out.

Then Repeat the whole threshold process for the layer on top, except do not move the slider for threshold as far as before, you want the color to be in front of the other layer. Select>Color Range and cut the white out. Now you go into the blending of the first layer and do Color Overlay and select the color on your poster you want that layer to be, and do the same for the other threshold layer. This should give you a similar effect.

Fantastic! Thanks a mil for sharing!!

  • Dave

I’m on step 9 but you never mentioned how to change the colour of the singer image

  • Tyler Nelson

Easily one of the best tutorials on PSDTuts. It’s been around for a couple years, yet I come back to it to show new designers what can be done with basic skills. Thanks for the tut!

  • alex

hey thx for tutorial. could someone please tell me what program/software is being used to make this

    • danny

      Photoshop cmon dude

  • Lisa

After much trial and error plus some frustration I managed to fill in the blanks this tutorial is not for beginners nor intermediate you need to understand the program masking etc… and do exactly whats said I know it may appear like things are missing but this is a tutorial that expects you know how to perform the commands in photoshop, google can help I didn’t google, as I have some prior knowledge and am willing to experiment.

    Thanks for the tut.

    Lisa

  • Rhino

Very nice tut, lost me with dragging the layers onto the vector mask….. and then what?
CS5 dont drag from one to next have to dup & send, but had an inverted mask couldnt reverse so discarded and improvised causing the partial loss of the paper texture.

  • Rhino

Final solution was to creaqte a clipping mask and place a pic, not quite right but near.
    However thanks again, much enjoyed.

  • Tatiana

Great Tutorial! I’ve made a superb poster for my friend’s birthday! Thank you!

  • Sierra

thanks for all the help with the warping of text!

  • Danny

i got stuck right from step 2.not much explanation about the rounded corner shape to selecting it by using the pen tool? i made the color adjustment and then made my shape. then when it came to selecting it i could do it i dont get it or im missing something. im using CS5.

  • Brian

Thanks for this! It was a challenge for a newbie, but I was able to create a great looking poster. Putting the picture into the poster was the most challenging part, so a little clarity there would be awesome. Thank you!

  • Emanuel

Please, explain step 2. I don’t get it… what’s that pen, tool, thing, wth!

ahah, thanks for your tuto. Maybe you can upload the template .psd file !

  • Tom

This tutorial was utterly poorly written. Many of the instructions are vague and entirely leave out intermediate steps. Unless you are very familiar with Photoshop, you aren’t likely to fair well with this tutorial.

  • Raj Dasari

    Hello Thanks for the post.

I need help with Step-8. How do i apply a harsh curve to the duplicate blue channel. Appreciate your help on this.

  • otto

merge the 3 layers for the girl, select all, cut paste image to poster with click drag.
layer will get under the folder group. you will have to invert this layer, then play with the vector masks in folder group and delete excess of photo with eraser and girl layer selected.

  • http://fibrediluce.blogspot.com Lulù

Nice tutorial and idea, thank you for sharing!
Although, I’ve done the whole thing in Illustrator instead, except for the photo.
Photoshop is quite slow and “user unfriendly” when you use text tool, and if you want to print it, then vector is better :)

  • umm

seriously the people who figured out steps 9 and so on needs to explain how you did it.

its pretty obvious many people reading this tutorial have no clue what he is talking about, sadly someone else made another tutorial just like this one and i still cant understand, although its slightly better in terms of wording and detail.

im practically begging for someone who understands steps 9 and so on to tell us how.

  • shyaden

    CONFUSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://sd ks

    Worst tutorial ever.

  • Barnaby Wilde

Thanks! Great tutorial for those with a basic understanding of PS. A little too fast paced and vague for those who are new to it.

  • http://designerkayemedia.elementfx.com DesignerKaye

As for curves: Click “New Layer” > “new adjustment layer” and click “curves”. That will bring up a dialog box with the color channels red, blue and green. (RGB) Click the blue and make it as harsh as possible.

If anyone needs help, send me an email at my site: http://designerkayemedia.elementfx.com. Maybe I should make a tutorial section?

Not every tutorial is going to assume you are a beginner. Most tutorials assume you know where everything is and how to get there. Its wise to learn the basics before trying this stuff. ;)

  • Eoghan

A nice idea but its not explained very well. Too many shortcuts and assumptions of the learner on the tutors part. Thankfully most of it is realtively simple photoshop. Also, I noticed this tutorial along with a lot of others are sourcing external material for tutorials that also must be paid for. I realise we’re supposed to innovate and improvise if we dont have an account with istockphoto but sometimes when learning its just easier to go with the same material. We are already paying a membership for this site now surely thats enough?? Source the files from a free site or don’t use files that require more memberships and payments! A lot of the time when I see a tutorial I want to do I am immediately turned away from it when I see premium stock imagery used in it and its not provided. Thankfully for this I was able to remove the watermark with CS5′s handy features but come on, that adds way more time to the initial tutorial. Not everybody has a paid membership with iStockphoto or other sites like them.

    • Eoghan

And now after many wasted hours I just cant finish it because of the explanation on the photograph. There is NO point submitting a tutorial if its not done properly. Otherwise you just frustrate everyone. “Heres a cool poster that I made and you won’t be able to make it”.

  • http://www.ok.com joe

Wish I hadn’t started this tutorial. Things like Step 5: “Make the fill color on the ‘with special guests’ layer white” OK? How do I do that?

If it’s for advanced users, that’s fine, but at least say that up front.

    Ugh.

  • Peter

I’ve created my version based upon this, check it out!

  • Rafael

    Awesome tutorial!!
I never made anything with photoshop and got a pretty good result!

  • dfhf

    I dont understant step 8-10

  • Honzo

This tutorial Was Great, a Little Bit Difficult because of the way explained but Great…..All you guys stop bitching, if you can’t do the tutorial learn how to fucking use photoshop first dumbasses and stop your bitching and whining >_>

  • Trevor

    Love the tut!

One Question: Is there a way to warp text in Illustrator? i know you can use the warp presets, but they suck! i want to warp text the same way you can in photoshop (the grid)

    • Destiny

I did this tut in illustrator. instead of using the warp option you can outline the text and use the white arrow to move around the points to how you would like it to be based on your graph.

  • Scilla Drummer

Hello! Can you tell me if it is possible to make this poster with Gimp? I know it’s not as good as the other programs, but it’s free and I don’t have to insert any serial code. Anyway, I can’t understand Step 2, when I’m asked to “Make sure that you set Make Work Path As Checked on the property bar”. Please help me!

  • Scilla Drummer

Sorry… I managed to pass Step 2, but now I can’t understand how I can warp the image… Again, I’m working with Gimp… Are there any tips for me?? Thanks!!

  • Bess

    Awesome Tutorial! Thanks!

  • Twiggy

Thanks so much for this tutorial! Pretty badass!

  • ah

I managed to get everything except steps 8-10 which is one of the most important parts! Using CS5…someone explain please!

  • Been

    Cool Tutorial ! I try it !
