Every time I try and draw out the custom shape in the beginning of the tutorial, the lines always end up breaking and end up looking more like piano keys than just a solid shape.

How do I fix this?

The tutorial is ok but I do agree with the text needing some more work. And I'm not sure about the blurred text. I can barely make out the letters. But on the other hand, this can provide some useful tips on using it on a different project. Designers don't EXACTLY have to follow every step of any tutorial that they see. They can open a window of putting in what you want. Good job.
