Even if they are friends or family, learn to charge for work early in your career or else you’ll get stuck in a rut of doing free/spec work.

Good point but that’s a rule that can work better in principle than in practice. Just try to charge your mother for work and see how that goes over. ;-)

When it comes to friends and family, you don’t charge them, unless you are doing work for their business not personal matter. Many cultures view charging your family and friends as like screwing them over. Family and friends usually work things out differently. They exchange services and favors and rarely send each other invoices.

      hey Melody,

you’re absolutely right. I preach that often, in fact here’s a link to an article I wrote for Envato/PSDTuts some months ago that touch on that subject in much more depth.

I never actually said in the video I did it for free, just that he had no budget to pay. So when I can’t get paid in cash I shoot for trade or equitable opportunities. So in this case, getting access to shoot pics of these amazing cars for use in future photoshop projects or as potential portfolio pieces, etc, are totally worth giving up an hour of my design time. The important thing is to always identify what is a value/commerce that you are going to get for your work. Barter, trade, cash, service, etc. Make sure you get something for your efforts. :o)

I use http://pixlr.com/o-matic/ a free online photo effects tool (which can also be downloaded).

It has a great interface which can be use by the client to create their own photos!

      Hi Sean,

I’ve played with Pixlr as an add-on to my Chrome browser. It’s really fun, sort of like a big fisher price editor for photos. It reminds me of some of the smart phone photo editors out there. For the price, it’s really fun and easy to use. I definitely recommend it to family and friends who won’t deep dive into apps like Photoshop.
