Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 13: Color a Medieval Robot Character Illustration will explain how to use line art from our previous tutorial and finish it by adding color and lighting to the scene. Let’s get started!

Nice character. I liked the way you indicated the scale of the character by that little human by his right leg. :D

    Nice tutorial. Thanks.

    Very nice tut.
I’ll try to apply in my stuff.

  • Dave

Beautiful as always. Martin :D! I can’t wait for the next episode already! Wouldn’t be watching it without you haha!

    • Dave

One question. What were your settings on the doge & burn tools?

I’m glad you liked it Dave. I always use subtle options for Dodge/Burn. Around 10% with soft edge brush.

  • Trevor

Excellent as usual, looking forward to the next one already.

Be careful with the dodge/burn tool, I’d recommend for people to use the actual paint color you want for shadows as opposed to relying on these tools–I think of them as accessories when it comes to painting. Your brushes and paint should always rule because not all shadows are black-ish and not all highlights are white-ish which those tools are limited too.

Thanks again for the tutorial. I am learning a lot. I have a question: Are your swatch colors on their own layer or are they on the block color layer?

Love the cape on the robot & the man at the foot is kinda funny :D

that was really helpful martin sir.
i wanted to ask you one thing , how to make turnarounds? i mean character sheets . irregular stuff like robots and mechs are quiet intimidating to visualise like a turntable. could you talk about it in a future episode please.
    thanks again
