It really took me back to my days in Photoshop 4. Back then everything was done with a lot of drawing and staring at the screen until your eyes bled. I don't know if I have a portrait with the kind of detail this method would best accentuate, but I am keeping this tutorial handy and will be watching out for an opportunity to do it. This reminded me of why I love Photoshop. Thank you.
