Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 9: How to Apply Light, Shading, and Shadow to Round Objects will continue to talk about shading and working with light and shadow. This time we will take a close look at round objects. We will learn how to define core shadows on cylinders, cones and spheres and we will practice how to create realistic cast shadows. Let’s get started!

      Hi Sareth,

I used Adobe Configurator to create custom panels in Photoshop. Check out the first part of the Digital Art series, I talk about it in details there.

      Cheers,
      Martin

Thank you Martin, and psd tuts +.

    Wow! Nicely explained.

  • Muffy

You shade the objects very nicely, but the shadows aren’t quite there!

Before anyone starts making shadows in Photoshop, please research “real life” and understand how lighting/shading actually looks and interact with objects. Find an object, use a lamp/torch to see how exactly the shadows form and where the light hits on the objects, practice and keep looking at stuff!

Have a look at this image: http://www.learntosee.com/v/vspfiles/photos/LTS-108-0-2.jpg – this is a very accurate drawing on how to shade these kind of objects, it all starts from Art Class.

Best shadows come from 3D renders, you can even make PS 3D layers interact with each other to create more realistic shadows, check out this tut to see how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT5zWYlA33k

    Good luck!

      Hi Muffy,

Thanks a lot for the links and your comment. I completely agree with you that it is best to learn from real life objects and study how light affects them and how shadows work.

      Cheers,
      Martin

The last two videos have been so educational for me and I just want to say I love you Martin ;o) On a serious note for those that didn’t get a chance to go to uni or study this we’d not think how important this was and it’s been eye opening so thank you very much.

  • Trevor

Many thanks, you make a relatively boring subject very interesting.

      Hi Shashwat,

I’m Hungarian, but people usually say my accent feels like a mixture of Swedish, Scottish and Italian. Nice mix :) I just hope it is easy to understand me.

Hi Martin, thank you for taking your time to teach, and in a very, very clear way!!! For me is easier to understand your pronunciation than from many others whom English is their mother language.

    Hi Martin,

I have a small request from you.
Is there an option to show pressed keyboard shortcuts in screen recorder? If it’s available, please open this option which we can easily recognize the shortcuts. Also, this may help you without say continuously keyboard keys.
