That's fine if you are a fine artist, doing things for yourself or display only. If however, you are a professional designer with clients that need communication and accountability, sketching is of the utmost importance. This article seems much more focussed to the needs of the professional designer that serves the needs of the job, not the fine artist. Without a sketch, the client cannot see where you are going. That's a pretty big leap of faith to put $$$ on.

The other benefit of sketching is that it allows you to stay "conceptual" and produce many ideas in a short frame of time. Let's be real: in the professional environment Time = Money, no getting around it. Once you have a number of ideas out, it is much easier to see which have the most potential, and develop the best of them.

Sketching really helps eliminate blind alleys that are the real time wasters. As Chris H. already said "sketching is important enough to do it, even if your hand-made stuff is crap. There’s nothing like having a clear mind about what your goal is once you sit at the cpu desk."

Just my experience (25+ years) and the experience of pretty much every other veteran designer I have ever worked with. If you want to get hired as a designer, have good sketching skills. If you don't want to develop the skills or just don't have the talent for it, why in the world would you want to be a professional designer?

I don't sketch enough. But I do know it is an important tool. I will be sure to do more of it in the future and see what a differance it makes.

Interesting note, Sketching helps weed out the bad ideas before you even go on do a digital draft. There are some cases where I've seen a conceptual idea on paper better than the final execution, mainly due to designers getting lost in trends. There are no shortcuts, filters, or "content shopping" involved when sketching, it goes straight from your experiences on to the paper. Pure thinking. (which is part of the process)

I always hated doing the process work in school, but it quickly become my ally in the design process. Being able to develop concepts on paper before the screen is key, as it can kill a lot of head aches.

Excellent post - easy to follow!
