« PreviousNext »

Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 7: How to Work With Perspective in Photoshop will explain a bit about the theory behind perspective and will focus on how to set up construction lines, vanishing points and a horizon. We will also show different ways to create a perspective grid and then use it for drawing three-dimensional objects. These techniques are useful for retouching photographs, but crucial for digital art. Let’s get started!

  • CURRYBILL

I’ve run into problems trying to produce the master perspective grid. Is there any chance of getting the written text for this tut? Usually I can follow MP’s excellent tuts without problems, even though I’m using CS3. Mine seems to go awray after I draw a vertical line with the line tool and click Control T. I cannot select the end anchor point. So I go ahead and enter the 2 degree and press enter; the line rotates but I have lost the original. This should be so basic – anyone help? Regards

      Hi Currybill,

When you want to transform and copy the line instead of Ctrl+T use Alt+Control+T. Alt means copy most of the times in Photoshop (among many other things :)

Good luck and I hope now you will be able to follow the tutorial properly.

Unfortunately there is no written text for my tuts as I plan everything in head and I don’t write down anything. I know it would be useful and I’m thinking on a way to solve the problem.

      Cheers,
      Martin

But, i got myself much more interested into it :P I think it should be really nice if you got a little bit more deep into perspective. Again, thank you world! Thank you Martin and PsdTuts. Great tutorial, you are truly awesome Martin! Only 1 small problem while trying to follow along for the grid… I managed to get create the shortcut, but it’s not copying the lines each time, just rotating it 2 degrees. What step am I missing / not doing properly?

    • dan

      He answered this question already.

  • neo

Hi, thanks for the all the great tuts.. really helpfull aswell for a no so good english speaking person :)

i have a problem right at the beginning. if i want to strg t the second time it gives me an error.

“could not transform the path because the selected portion of the path….”

i use cs6 and there is no button for direct shape layers.

i’ve tried to make the line without this and make a layer after. But it seems theres the problem..

    can someone help me?

    • neo

Hi.. maybe i get the answer by myself.. its just a thought but could it be that if i change the Height/width to 10% thats the shape no more reachable because of the thinnes.. (in terms of resolution)?

In the video tutorial ive seen that martins set resolution is quiet big.. 25000 or something..

if that be right… i have an advanced question. Is there a way how i can reach the “lost?” shape ?

      • Jason

I also have the same problem. I change width to 10% but when I Ctrl+t it gives me the same error as you. I’m also using cs6.

      • Gary

I am having the same problem here. Using CS6 I get an error every time I change the width to 10% and then attempting to free transform again.

  • http://www.ispsd.com rijo

Superb tutorial. I never knew a thing like vanishing point holds so much importance.

  • http://youtube.com/agent333322 Mohammed

    Much respect martin :)
    You are my teacher.

  • carlos

    Fannnnnnntastic tutorial!!!!!!!!!

100% usefull and opened my eyes

    Thank you so much

  • Riley

Was there somewhere to download the perspective shape?

  • FEATHEREDPIXELS

does this work with CS6 ??? i cant get to transform the path after reducing the width to 10% :(

    • Kayne Ortiz

i’m having the same exact problem.

  • denisevz

    Excelent tutorial! Thanx a lot.

  • Istvan

Well if anyone still reading this tutorial i find that if you don’t reduce the lines with,(keep it 100%) than the transform and the step and repeat works perfectly. Don’t know why is happening this. Maybe its a bug. I use CS6. Happy learning…:-)

    • SUni4

yeah, but the shape you make has a big black circle in the centre

  • http://e-digitaldesign.com/ Eric Malcolm

Thanks for the article, stuff is so much easier to do on paper.
