Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 21: Create a Medieval Battle Axe in Photoshop will demonstrate how to construct a medieval battle axe in Photoshop. This tutorial will cover several techniques but don’t worry, it won’t be too difficult to follow. Let’s get started!

The entire shaft including wrappings looks one dimensional. A shame since the “blade” looks pretty good. Except, I would probably have made it more dirty, for an axe, I’d say that it’s unrealisticly clean.

  • Dave

The only problem I really have is with the cloth around the handle at the bottom, it doesn’t quite have the correct feel to it, but otherwise it’s very well done! I wanna remind everyone that Martin is just doing this to show you his methods and how goes about doing a project, you guys should all remember that you have to do some of the work yourself.

  • Aditya

Just a suggestion, it’d be helpful if you could come out with a tutorial on how to get accustomed to using a tablet like Bamboo. I got one recently but I’m just unable to get the hang of it. I’m so used to seeing what I’m drawing at the same place where I’m drawing. I find it weird to look at the computer screen everytime.
    Still your tutorials are great!

The blade has to be more shiny .. it seems to me that with an extra hour of work on details the axe would have looked great!

    • Dave

Well I’m sure Martin would’ve, but keep in mind of his time constraints

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys, I really appreciate it and I completely agree with them. I always try to make the artwork in these tutorials as good as possible in the short amount of time I have, but there is always place for improvement. I know several digital artists who can do twice as good art in half the time. We all need to learn continuously from each other. I’m teaching you, but I’m also learning from you at the same time. Thanks again for all your comments!

  • Nico

I do agree with the comments above. if there was more time to spend on that axe, it would look great, but hey! We learnd to do it by ourselves in the previouse tutorials :D So lets do the final steps to make it look awesome
