Final Product What You'll Be Creating

Having a caricature painted of yourself can be a fun and exciting experience. That’s because just about everyone has wondered, at some point, what they would look like as a cartoon or as an illustration on the cover of a magazine. In this Psd Premium tutorial, veteran illustrator, Jason Seiler will demonstrate how to create a professional caricature portrait using Psdtuts Editor, Grant Friedman as an example. Jason Seiler’s illustrations have been featured as covers and interior pieces for TIME, Business Week, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, MAD magazine, and many others. Jason has also worked as a character designer on Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, helping to create such characters as the Red Queen, the Tweedles, the Bandersnatch and more. This guy is an amazing artist. I love his style.

I like the daring green tones in the skin and that you pointed out why you actually used it. Most tutorials on the web go for the “how to” and leave out the “why”, but i’m glad you saw this flaw and structured your tutorial into more elaborate instructions.

I enjoyed reading it, every word of it! Thanks!

It’s funny I wanted to do a tutorial just like this..beat me to the punch!
Interesting..I never thought about setting the brush tone to multiply before to get over the annoying first stage of color filling. I usually just put a base color at 100% opacity and then go from there with my color layering..I think I’ll try this method. I also tend to hold off on highlighting til I’ve got most of my shadows in..,cause then I end up painting back over the highlights..

This tutorial reminds me of the days when my professor would give me all the good tips and tricks for making a drawing better, that would end up working of course..

Oh and the greatest tip about your tut is to think of how everything plays into the picture, from the different textures to how all these elements affect one another…when I realized this it totally changed my perspective about painting..and still does.

    Definitely a great tutorial!

    Absolutely amazing!

You can tell straight away that this guy was born with a real talent to draw and then took his skills digital.
Grant, I bet you’ll soon have a giant framed print of this on your wall soon ;)

I absolutely love it. My girlfriend on the other hand is a bit terrified of it. I’d be afraid that she would hide it. Although it does made a fantastic Facebook profile pic. Even though most of my non-design friends can’t tell that it’s actually a painting.

  5. Amazing artist. I love his style

  6. Adriana says:

This is one the most awesome tuts and outcomes I’ve ever seen! At first glance I thought it was a photo manipulation, it’s so realistic! Great job!

  7. dr.emi says:

    Perfect! I like it.

  8. Step 1. Be a great artist.
    Step 2. Make this picture.

I don’t think it’s that simple. I’m sure it has taken him years/hours of drawing, research, trial and error, and traditional training for him to get to this point. And at the end of the day it still took 10 hours, and for others it would take much longer.

You don’t get that skill overnight, you train it overtime. As soon as something becomes a “drawing” tutorial readers no longer want to try it out, cause it looks “too hard” and it’s always the “natural talent” of the artist that got them to that point–but yet so many want more advanced tutorials…make up your minds.

      • What I understand Dennis try to say is that anybody will teach you on how to paint so good portraits, no matter how many tutorials you read, it’s just practice and practice.

I didn’t read the tutorial but I tend to agree with him.

      • neil says:

        I agree with Melody.

A tutorial can help with techniques, but it cannot help you avoid years of developing a necessary skill set.

Dennis’ comment reveals only a bitterness born in impatience and complacency.

Being a good artist isn’t something that happens when you throw something together in photoshop between video games.

    • aerodyamic says:

I have to agree. That’s what a bunch of these “tutorials” boil down to.

    • bharat says:

      I agree to Dennis.

    • Iggy says:

Very true…this is not a tutorial that anyone can ‘learn’ how to create. You have to already possess raw artistic talent to be able to do this.

  9. flyingfox says:

    Wow!

Isn’t the internet a wonderful invention? Being able to be a student of such a talented artist.

Tuts like this make me really grateful. No joke. It’s a gift, nothing less.

  10. Graphiics says:

    its incredible tutorial for me

  11. SKiT says:

Lol, I figured how to do this just from these images. I still need lots of tips, though.

  12. Excellent, merci beaucoup…
