Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 16: How to Draw Drapery in Photoshop will explain how to draw drapery and make it look three dimensional by understanding how folds are formed by gravity, tension and compression. In this tutorial we will utilize Photoshop’s basic tools. We will also put your drawing tools to the test. Let’s get started!

Once again very good and thanks.

  • DJ

As usual, a phenomenal tutorial – and doing it so fast! The only area which seems to me not to be effected by gravity is the bottom left – flaring out and up, which I’m sure you would/could have corrected with the puppet tool you showed us if you didn’t have the time pressure of the tutorial. Thanks for being so free with your talents, we all appreciate the effort you put in for us.

My drawing professors always say: draw from the nature. Dont use rubber. Put as many lines as you can to get desired effects.

  • Adam Pominski

amazing, how did you get so good at using the tablet

  • BrianC

This is very good thank you! have always wondered how to get started drawing clothing and cloth items – so this one helps alot!
    Keep it up!

hi, ur works are really awesome and they r very helpful. i was wandering if u could make a vid abt “using color”. like which color matches with which color. using different shades of one color. or when i extract a subject from a pic which color should i use as the background color of that subject…… like what should be the background color of a model matching with her/his dress. and how to use these things in practical photo editing. and thnx for sharing ur works with us. kip up.

As usual Martin, very interesting and helpful tutorial. May I ask you one small question. I am using CS-4, so is it possible to download PEPET WARP filter, if i am not mistaking the word.

I thank you in advance, and keep up your good job you are doing for us who wish to learn more.

      Hi Mario,

Unfortunately the Puppet Warp feature is only available in Photoshop CS5, but you can use the Free Transform tool’s Warp mode, which is quite similar in previous versions.

      Hope that helps,
      Martin

    Hello!
I’ve found out about digital art about two months ago and I must say I’m fascinated!
Your tutorials are very fun and easy to understand. Since I’m a beginner and don’t
know a lot about them, I was wondering if you could suggest me which one to choose.
After I’ve read all the online articles, I think that Bamboo Create really would do it for
me, because I would mainly use the tablet for digital painting and drawing.
    Thank you a lot!

    Greetings from Croatia!
