Photoshop is an excellent tool for manipulating photographs but it can also be used as a means to create stunning digital art. This tutorial is part of a 25-part video tutorial series demonstrating everything you will need to know to start producing digital art in Photoshop. Digital Art for Beginners, by Adobe Certified Expert and Instructor, Martin Perhiniak will begin by teaching you how to draw in Photoshop. At the conclusion of this series you will know all you need to produce your own concept art and matte paintings in Photoshop.

Today’s tutorial Part 19: Create a Lava Monster Concept Painting will demonstrate how to start a concept painting using rough lines and then how to add details using color and shading. Let’s get started!

  • Trevor

A sticking mess this one but the usual high standard, thanks for another great Tut.

  • Sarspazam

    Great tutorial Martin,

I hate to fill the comments thread with a random question, but that colour selecting tool. What’s the plugin, would save so much time.

    Thanks.

    • Nico

Its not a plugin, its a feature of CS5

    • BrianC

The color wheel is a Photoshop CS5 feature.

I love that accent.. It’s like listening to Bela Lugosi reading a Photoshop tutorial… Great stuff! ;)

That remark is so funny but spot on as I am from the same county as Lugosi. We are both from Hungary :) I hope I don’t sound like Dracula though :)

      • http://www.worldofkaos.com kaos

You don’t sound Dracula at all. See the brilliant “Ed Wood” movie (by Tim Burton) and you’ll get where I’m going.
Glad you took the comment in good spirit, as that’s how it’s meant.

Oh, and excellent tutorial, by the way – keep those coming.. :)

Could you post the settings of your mixer brush, and what brush you use?

My settings for the Mixer Brush:
      Softness: 0%
Load the brush after each stroke turned off
      Very wet
Sample all layers usually turned on (depends on what am I doing)
I’m usually using it with a default brush tip (circular) but you can use it with any custom brushes.

I’m using Wacom tablets. I have a range of different products:
      Bamboo
      Intuos 4
      Cintiq 21

I’m using the Bamboo when I’m travelling, the Intuos when I’m presenting and the Cintiq at home.

  • Sean

I am also very curious about how you were choosing colors. The wheel like interface is only familiar to me from Corel Painter. I would love to use something similar in Photoshop. Thanks you

      Hi Sean,

The colour wheel is a CS5 feature, it is called HUD colour picker. The keyboard shortcut is:
      Mac – Ctrl+Option+Cmd+click
      PC – Shift+Alt+Right click

You can find options for it under the Preferences/General/HUD Color picker.

      Hope that helps!

  • TheHugo

This will be really popular search on Google.
Because this is the only one lava tut which is actually good

Well it looks great piece of art. This was an amazing tutorial. I highly appreciate your professional approach. Keep sharing such more fascinating blogs

  • Leaf3D

    Hi Martin,

thank you so much for all of your tutorials. They’ve really helped me and I’ll definitely recommend them to people. I was just wondering what image resolution you used to draw this e.g. ppi and width/height. I can’t get it right so I get the right amount of detail.

By the way, you don’t sound like Dracula, but you do make me laugh because every now and again a British accent seems to pop up in odd words. Don’t know if anyone else has noticed. Hope you don’t take offence, I was raised in South Africa and have lived in England most my life so I have picked up a mixed accent myself.
