Final Product What You'll Be Creating

In movies, filmmakers often use matte paintings when the backdrop of a scene can’t or doesn’t exist in real life. In this Psd Premium tutorial, author Ed Lopez will demonstrate some advanced matte painting techniques by creating an underground cave city with Photoshop. This massive tutorial, which includes over 400 screenshots and almost 3 hours of video will show you how you can create your own matte paintings or photo compositions using stock photography, computer generated images, and even some manual painting. This tutorial is available exclusively to Premium Members. If you would like to take your matte painting skills to the next level, Log in or Join Now to get started!

great work Ed! I love it

  • Travis Davids

This is why i love my premium membership :)

  • Andrea

I don’t know what style you want to look like on this image (realistic or cartoon or..?), but for me seems like is “unfinished”, don’t know how explaing but for me something is missing in this image..

  • Matt P.

The main column of light is too vertical, and not faithful to optics. It should more of a conic shape, growing dimmer toward the edges and lighting much more of the darker area than it is now.

Right now it looks as though the city is getting beamed up by a spaceship.

    • flyingfox

Exactly what i thought. It took about a minute though, before i figured what bothers me about the picture.

    • http://www.ericvasquez.net Eric Vasquez

More like the beam of light coming from the flash light perhaps

    • http://aevion.net Dave

Agreed. It looks unfinished with the way the light is hitting the city. The coloring/brightness looks odd, and it doesn’t blend well enough at the moment. With just a few adjustment layers though, this could be amazing… it is really close to looking incredible.

    Hi,

There’s no base plate in the source folder. Please fix this:) Thanks.

    • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman

Sorry about that. This tutorial is so big that it would take me an entire day to re-upload all the files. So here is the base plate.

      • dwele

Thanks. I suppose that’s the full package?:)

      • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman

That’s just the base plate file. To download the rest of the files, you’ll need to log in and download the entire 1.25 GB zip file.

  • Hugo

I really like the idea and the composition but the city being white kinda make it looks like a wireframe render… why don’t just color the city or something? Great detailed tutorial though :)

I got to upgrade my internet connection to download source files. :(
    BTW awesome tutorial ! Thanks

  • Odyssey

Wow, I’m shocked. Lopez always pulls of completely stunning stuff but this just doesn’t turn out good. It really needs some adjustment layers.. the final image looks like it should be only half-way through the tut.

  • Michael Owens

That original image of the cave – spectacular, I want it!

I wish could download the source files for free.Any way great tutor.

    Wow really appreciated Ed

Is there a mix in digital painting and real life photographs?
It seems to me that they don’t blend well together although I like the overall concept.

      Thx man…
      great service.. :-)

      appreciate it..

  • Daniel

please I want to download this on tut+ marketplace!!! is that possible???

    • http://psd.tutsplus.com/ Grant Friedman

We had some issues uploading this tutorial to the marketplace because of the size of the download (being over 1GB) so unfortunately it isn’t available on the marketplace at the moment. Your best bet would be to become a premium member. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Mimi

Lovely concept and looks like you have put a great effort to this, but I agree with everyone else here, this needs to be refined a bit.Especially it doesn’t look like a city to me.If we consider the girl and city’s proportions, then it feels as if she is looking at a miniature version of the city from far.

It’s a great job anyway and keep up the good work ;)
