This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips

As an artist, I love working with great imagery, especially when the project involves collaborating with talented photographers and art directors. Starting out with a great, well-lit shot makes my job much easier. But every now and then the project involves taking something more ordinary and turning it into something special.

While it can be more of a challenge to create something special from an ordinary shot, the artist side of me loves that challenge. And it was while working on one such project that I got the idea for creating this tutorial. In this tutorial we’ll go through the steps I used to turn the shot below to the one you see above. Along the way you’ll learn about manipulating depth of field, creating lighting effects that give the image a little bit of ‘bling’, how to create a split toning color effect and finally how to apply a texture and color treatment to the image to give it a cool, vintage look.

By the end you’ll see some new ways of working that you can vary and apply to your images adding that special touch of your own. Let’s get started!

where is the sparkle??? looks like typical color adjusting+texture

I disagree…. theres a lot going on in that tutorial.

Look at the original to the finished product, completely different images, with a whole lot more work done then adjusting the color and texture

      • aMs

this looks exactly like some color adjustments with more accurate masking touch, i could do something like that in 5 minutes without reading the tutorial…

Yeah, it doesn’t look that hard… but maybe we’re missing something

The idea behind this tutorial is to share some techniques that can be used to add artistic touches to an image. The inspiration for this came last year when I was working with photographer Bob Stevens on a series of fine art images.

This tutorial covers not only regular color adjustments and texture overlays, but includes some variations on Burning & Dodging, Depth of Field manipulation, and split toning using the Blend-If Sliders for a Curves Adjustment layer. The image itself is just a way of sharing these concepts.

What I really hope is that readers will get some new ideas for applying these techniques and find ways they’ll want apply them in their own work. So read through the tutorial and see if something sparks any new ideas for you.

I wonder if that vignette isn’t a little too big… There’s about 40 pixels in each direction when it’s at full strength (i.e. it’s as strong as it ever gets)… As such it looks like you’re looking through a peephole. It might’ve been more effective if you just cropped the photo by that much so it’s not so distracting.

The point is not about how big the vignette is, it’s about how to create it using the Cloud brush included with the tutorial.

I will try it. I want to see if i can learn something…. Why this is Premium?
