From the small preview I can see, there’s no composition to the piece, no depth just images layered in front and behind each other.

I like the project. And enjoyed the tutorial to learn the ins and outs of projects like these. However one of the many reasons I bought into the membership was that I assumed restrictions were lifted on the premium files henceforth premium membership. But I open the PSD file to find watermarks everywhere. Not just the photo but the textures and other stuff. I would be fine with one in the corner of the finished images not slapped every 50 pixels. I respect artists and their work and expect them to get paid for the work. I am an artist and this excessive watermarking especially on tutorial files turns me off creatively. I can’t get a good sense of anything like color and composition etc when there are watermarks in every section of the image and layers. Just a major distraction. I mean come on I cant steal it anyway (why would I need to) as this is one of the top tutorial sites on the planet and is watched and scrutinized by the art and design community anyway. Say I did steal it and publish it in a matter of seconds it would be called out. At least around where I live my friends, family and businesses visit the site quite often. I figured my money I plopped down would take care of the iStock fees as well. But apparently I need to plop down for 10 credits at iStock (almost 20 more us dollars) just for the girl photo not including other images I would have to purchase as well. 22 for Membership 18 bucks times 3. I am would have to spend close to 100 bucks to just to have a Premium Tutorial? I am a starving artist and can’t keep feeding money to several sites just to do 1 tutorial. I hate to complain but of course just an opinion. Still one of my favorite sites though.

Thanks for the feedback. On Psdtuts, we provide instruction, not free stock images. Because we do not own the distribution rights to these images we cannot distribute them to our members even if they have been included in a psd file. We are sorry that you feel that the psd is overly watermarked but it should be sufficient to allow you to figure out what is going on within the file.

You could try sourcing your own stock and making a completely new image following this tutorial. Better learning and a far better result that way too. This is about learning techniques, not copying a tutorial pixel for pixel.

      Just something to think about.

This is really simple, interesting and beautiful..creation. :)

I agree with SpaceMan. Making the tutorial dependent on an image that is 10 credits at iStock is not very nice. Actually is a hidden cost past the premium fee. I hope this is not a common case for the tuts in the site (I just joined too)

As to Ren’s comment, yes I agree this forces you to try and approximate things with your own stock but that in my mind detracts from the purpose of a step-by-step tutorial. The time to do your own thing is later, this is the time to learn step by step what the original artist did, with the exact elements he did it.

Actually, I would take the argument for using your own material more if the tutorials were indeed teaching you rationale behind techniques. But honestly they rather say things like “set the green value to -67″ which is a lot less useful if you are not working with the original images.

I still enjoy the site, and the tutorial, but lets be honest: the fact that the paid step-by-step tutorial is dependent on another paid piece should be advertised up front.
