There’s a lot more to this image that just photo manipulation. Nowadays, most matte paintings start out as photos anyway. Photoshop has revolutionized this particular area of special effects and is a crucial tool in creating matte paintings. Most start out with source photos or on a plate from the shot. As an example, Dylan Cole, a professional matte painter, related how Peter Jackson wanted all matte paintings for the LoTR movies to be photos and told the painters to start over if they told him their shots weren’t photographic. Is this a matte painting? Technically, it wasn’t matted into foreground footage, but background images like this still count.

that’s so not a mattepainting,go google ‘massive black’ or ‘dylan cole’ to find why.

I have met Dylan Cole and he is a fantastic matte painter. I have also seen demos by artists from Massive Black and they do great work. Perhaps someday I can work at that level, but this is the title that PSD Tuts wanted to use for this tutorial.

Looks GREAT! I love the LCD Monitor next to the freeway…interesting! :-)

I love the roadway as well…just floating above the clouds…sort of futuristic/whimsical.
